[Bofur’s sitting in the gardens as the feed starts, glancing up to offer a brief smile. In his hands is a small block of wood, which is starting to take on the shape of what seems to be a bear. Steady hands direct his whittling knife against the wood, slicing off little shavings bit by bit.]
Back in th’ day, I ‘ad wee dwarrows beggin’ for me t’ make ‘em somethin’. Fili an’ Kili too. Can’t even name ‘ow many toys I made f’r those troublemakers. An’ they were always breakin’ ‘em! Kili in particular. ‘E’d come up t’ me with those big ol’ eyes o’ his, all teary, an’ beg me to fix ‘is favorite li’l ‘orse or soldier. [He lets out a soft laugh, continuing to carve.]
Bein’ here, someplace so diff’rent, ‘minds me o’ all th’ things I miss. What I wouldn’t give f’r a piece o’ Bombur’s mince pies! [Bofur chuckles.] S’pose that’s th’ trick though, innit? Rememberin’ the good things, an’ just trustin’ it’ll get better. ‘S how I get through. If y’ don’t got those good mem’ries, don’t keep ‘em fresh an’ new an’ happy like they were, that’s when y’ start questionin’ what it’s all for.
[He looks up from his whittling, the movement of his hands pausing for a moment. His smile fades, something more sober crossing his face.] ‘S not meant t’ be easy. Ain’t no point in that. Y’ keep lookin’ ahead t’ a brighter day, y’ take comfort an’ joy in th’ little things, that’s how y’ get through.
[His expression turns a little sheepish and he flushes a little, embarrassed with how much of himself he’s revealed.] Didn’t mean t’ be so preachy, but felt like it needed t’ be said.

That's not such a bad way of lookin' at it. I doubt it'll ever get better here--or even get good, really--but thinkin' about everybody back home helps.
So is that... whatever you're doin' one of the "little things" you take joy in?
video
The nod to his whittling makes his smile brighten, and he nods.]
It is indeed. Like t' keep m' hands busy, 'minds me o' home.
video
[Firo finds that keeping himself busy and moving also keeps him from thinking to much about what they've been through on the Tranquility, but he keeps that to himself.]
What exactly are you makin'?
video
[He holds up his carving. It's still rather rough, but it's distinctly a bear.] Wee bear. Nothin' too fancy.
video
It looks pretty neat. I never thought to use a knife that way. Seems like it must be tough to get it to come out the way you want.

Back where I come from people say this guy and his elves live up at the North Pole. The elves make the toys and on Christmas he flies around the world and gives 'em out to kids.
video
So he owns elves an' lives at a Pole? Don't sound like me 't all!
video
Anyway, the story's all bull. Just made up to make kids behave.
video
What's wrong with m' beard?
video
[Though the curly mustache is quite impressive.]
video
Speaking of, he's now touching his scruff a little self consciously.]
Hm.
video
[He's wondering if the guy's just thinking or if he accidentally offended him. Firo tends to do that.]
video
video
[He adds, jokingly:]
I'd hate to upset a guy who's holdin' a knife.
video
Do I really look like th' type t' run someone through?
video
You don't, actually, but I've been wrong about people before. So who knows?
[There are plenty of people who assumed Firo wasn't the violent type and got an unpleasant surprise.]
video
I'll give y' a hint. 'M not usually likely t' run 'round stabbin' folk.

[Less joking and more conversational:]
I more prefer knives myself.
video
[Hi. Still in the gardens, still with pillows and blankets everywhere.]
video
Glad y' agree.
[A moment of hesitation] Are y' feelin' a bit better?
video
video
video; so late to meeting you forgive me ahhh
Anything? It can be remembered?
video; probably my fault tbh fdsao i've been a failsaur
Bofur frowns a moment, a little confused at what the halfling's trying to say.]
'Fraid you'll 'ave t' say that again, lad. Not quite sure what y' mean.
video; sorry so late!
Aye, but can you blame us for wanting your toys? They were the best! [There's a burst of laughter here, a drop of sweat sliding down his nose even as his grin softens and fades at the edges. One hand ruffles his hair, knuckles brushing soot across cheekbone.]
When'd you get so wise, Bofur?
video; completely fine!!
Oh, the best, aye? [Bofur laughs as well, amused.] S'pose you're right, Bifur's were a bit scary.
[And he laughs yet again at last question and shakes his head.] Wise? Please.
video; eheh good then uwu
Just a tad! [He snorts with laughter.] But they could be a hit, y'know.
And okay, maybe his laugh turns a bit more helpless here because Bofur? Wise? Please.]
Okay maybe not quite as wise as some, but still!
video; bwahahaha
He could take special requests though, if you really wanted a soldier.]
Nice thing 'bout Bifur's toys...wee little badgers don't care much what they're chewin' on, aye? [He winks. Yes, Kili, he's referring to you. Even if you don't remember chewing on your toys, Bofur does. The arms were always the first to go.
Hey, you were the one to say it. The older dwarf laughs as well, shaking his head.] Now you're jus' tryin' t' flatter me. If y' want me t' make y' somethin', just ask.
video; these sillies
There's a sheepish grin here, blush settling across cheeks and sweeping up until even the tips of his ears are red. No, he doesn't remember that much but Fili's certainly delighted in reminding him.]
They were convenient to chew on! Amad always scolded me if I chewed on my hair instead! [EMBARRASSING, GOSH BOFUR.] 'sides, I'm not a dwarvling anymore, I outgrew that habit.
[Snooty sniff, even if he's grinning.]
Would you really make me something if I asked, though?
video; i love them afhdai
But once he does, he'll probably become a favorite subject of Bofur's carving. He has to laugh when Kili goes pink. Bofur's always loved to tease, and he has quite a bit of blackmail on both of the lads.]
If I do, would I 'ave t' fix it all th' time? No bitin' off any more heads. Means I've got t' start all over on it.
[Bofur shakes his head, chuckling.] Hones'ly though, I'd love t' carve y' somethin'.
no subject
There's a fond little huff, cheeks still a rosy pink.]
Aye well maybe I'll bite off a leg this time. [A grin lingers at his lips.] 'sides you know the broken ones made excellent dying soldiers!
[And the grin just widens as he rubs at his cheek, smearing soot across skin.]
Yeah? I'd like that.
