Well, now we're at a relative minimum of ongoing life-threatening horrors- [He pauses for a moment, waiting to see if the universe was going to challenge that statement and send Ward to shoot him or the like]- ah, there we are. Anywho, it's caught my eye that while Security's managed a most impressive list of doers of good and daring-do, we've at scare what I'd consider even the liberal definition of a bare-bones shift down in Engineering.
[Or, as the tone of his voice implies, the best department in ever]
For all ye laddies and lassies not from a more technologically enlightened era, those'd be the bits that keep us all alive and, in theory, moving...to...ah, somewhere. They require a fair bit of upkeep. Particularly when we find ourselves in a bit of a tussle, as seems rather the norm aboard this Lady.
Which brings about the point of these ramblings. If any aboard are keen on gaining a bit of hands-on experience on learning the ins and outs of the fine engineering trade, I've a touch of experience from my Academy days in expanding eager minds. No previous experience needed- the less the better, in some cases. I'm sure other members of the department'd be pleased to help in the endeavour, as well. [Or have students shoved off on them when Scotty gets distracted. Same difference.]
So if you've an interest, pipe up here and we'll set up a shadowing schedule. Scotty out.

Twenty first century? By any chance, would you be a witness of the good Zefram Cochrane's work, then?

Knowing the ins and outs of the system's a fine skill for any soul- never know when those comms'll need a quick re-wiring. And you needn't concern yourself over overwhelming us. It make take some doing, but I've seen my time stretched thinner.

[aka in case he and the rest of the real engineers vanish (again). This ship apparently has already send him back once and all.
But on a cheerier note.]
And a man needs a wee ensign or two to fetch him his meals, in any case.
