01 ; video.

[ the video feed flickers on, showing a face peering way, way too close into the camera, squinting at it curiously. it takes jion a moment to realize that it's recording and pull back, gingerly moving his hands away from where he's set the device down on a table and sitting back in his chair. he smiles at the camera, but his smile has the distinct edge of something nervous and awkward about it. ]

Uh. Hi! It seemed like saying somewhere here was the proper thing to do, so I thought I should do it. Um -- [ a pause as he looks off to the side, as if he's been taking notes on what to say. ] I'm Jion. I'm a combat medic, though I was on leave right before I ended up here. So, I guess that was pretty funny timing?

[ a somewhat nervous laugh before he continues. ]

But uh, I'm pretty boring.

And I was more interested in -- . Like, I heard we're in space, and this is a spaceship and all, and I heard that there're othe -- uh, that there's people here who aren't just normal humans?

[ he sounds a little more excited now, sitting forward to look into the camera with great anticipation. he almost seems jittery at the prospect of non-humans being here. ]

An' I think that's so cool! I don't want to be rude or anything, but I really wanna know more about that. Uh, if anyone wants to talk about it, I mean! I'd appreciate that a lot.

I wouldn't say we're like government agents, but blending is a part of how we've survived for this long. Not to say it's an entirely well-kept secret, a lot of witches have started to marry Muggles, mostly because the wizarding society is beginning to shrink a little bit. It's- it's a whole thing, though. Some people are considered purists, in that they'll only associate with those who have pure, magical blood, and others who don't mind either way.

Memory charms are real, yes, but we usually resort to things like.. concealment spells. For instance, Hogwarts School is covered by a powerful enchantment that keeps the entire castle hidden from anyone that doesn't have magic in their blood. If a Muggle were to approach it, they'd only see the grassy hills as if nothing is there, and then feel a strong urge to turn around and look for something else.

In my experience, usually when a Muggle sees something magical happen in front of them, they don't even.. realize it. They won't accept it to be real.

There are laws against it, yes. It's actually quite strict. We're not allowed to perform magic outside of school until we're seventeen years old, and once you're of-age, you're still not allowed to perform magic in front of Muggles unless it's a life or death situation. You can get arrested for it.

I can only talk about it here because- well, it doesn't matter so much here, does it? We're in outerspace, with people from different worlds. Kinda gives us some room to talk about it freely, in a way we couldn't back home. So, it's a big deal back home, but here it seems to be alright.

And there are even some exceptions back home, as well. For instance, neither of my parents were wizards, yet I was born with magic in my blood. It's not very common, but it happens enough that there's a sort of protocol that the Headmaster of my wizarding school follows. He visited my home and explained it to my parents, who were afterwards sworn to secrecy. I'm sure people react differently to it, if someone were to really reject the idea there's ways of erasing the memory of him even being there, but my parents took it well. They tell the neighbors I've been shipped off to a private school, upon my request. People don't really question it.

In my experience, wizards are more likely to turn rabbits into hats, then back again, to show off magical skill. Completely harmless to the animals, mind! Just a bit of Transfiguration, but- yes, hold on let me think of something-

[ it's completely shameful of her, but she wants to show him something impressive, something a little advanced, maybe. even if he won't know just how advanced it is. but something that looks impressive, yes, so- ]

Oh! I could show you my Patronus. She's rather pretty. [ REALLY PROUD OF HER PATRONUS, OKAY ] Er, quick explanation- a Patronus is a type of defense spell, it's used against some of the most powerful dark creatures in the wizarding world. Namely, Dementors. Not that I've ever run into one, but, Dementors literally feed on human happiness, just their presence drains the room of it, in fact. At their worst, they steal your soul. The Dementor's Kiss, they call it. But anyway, a witch can cast a Patronus to fight them off, effectively scare them away, and it's fueled by a witch's happiest memories. Which sounds daft, I know, but it's actually really remarkable. I can show you mine now. Yeah?

[ ... yeah, because she's hopping up off of her bed to stand in front of the camera now, wand out at the ready, and she pulls in a breath before- ] Expecto Patronum. [ say hello to Lily's Patronus. ]

[ she can't actually pet the doe, it's like putting your hand through a shimmery cloud of sorts, but she does hold her hand out so the animal can approach her, all very friendly ]

When I first learned magic was real, I couldn't get enough of it. I bought a ton of books, read them all like mad over the summer before my first year. Sometimes I still feel that way about it, like I'm still trying to believe I can live in a world with spells and potions.

[ she lowers her wand, and the doe trots around her happily before fading away, leaving a faint blue glow behind before that fades as well ]

You've no idea how wonderful it is to talk about it like this. I'm hardly the only Muggleborn in school, but most of my classmates grew up knowing magic in some capacity.. It's just nice to share it with someone new, so. Thank you, really.

My name is Lily, by the way.
