[ the video feed flickers on, showing a face peering way, way too close into the camera, squinting at it curiously. it takes jion a moment to realize that it's recording and pull back, gingerly moving his hands away from where he's set the device down on a table and sitting back in his chair. he smiles at the camera, but his smile has the distinct edge of something nervous and awkward about it. ]

Uh. Hi! It seemed like saying somewhere here was the proper thing to do, so I thought I should do it. Um -- [ a pause as he looks off to the side, as if he's been taking notes on what to say. ] I'm Jion. I'm a combat medic, though I was on leave right before I ended up here. So, I guess that was pretty funny timing?

[ a somewhat nervous laugh before he continues. ]

But uh, I'm pretty boring.

And I was more interested in -- . Like, I heard we're in space, and this is a spaceship and all, and I heard that there're othe -- uh, that there's people here who aren't just normal humans?

[ he sounds a little more excited now, sitting forward to look into the camera with great anticipation. he almost seems jittery at the prospect of non-humans being here. ]

An' I think that's so cool! I don't want to be rude or anything, but I really wanna know more about that. Uh, if anyone wants to talk about it, I mean! I'd appreciate that a lot.

[Well, hullo Jion, have a Cat peering at you amusedly. Bardo's not in the gardens for once, but judging from the flour smudged across his cheek it's just because he's off baking something---probably for the other kets, really.]

What d'you want to talk about? [It's not like it's unusual to be a cat, to him, after all.]

Woooah!

[ jion sounds genuinely surprised and excited, and peers a little closer into the camera, squinting into the screen. ] You're like a -- a cat? Or a tiger? That's so cool! They're real, right? Those ears?

[ oh man, that's so neat! ]

[His ears flick at that little exclamation, and Bardo nods with something of a huffed laugh.]

I'm a Ribika, a cat. [And a teasing grin here.] 'course they're real.

Ri-bi-ka. [ he sounds out that word slowly, seeming to try out the sound of it. and then beaming at that little ear-flick. ] Ribika.

Oh man, that's so neat!

I haven't really heard of anything like that before, but if there's a term for it and everything does that mean there's a bunch of you? Like -- a bunch of cat-people? Can you hear better and see well in the dark and stuff like that?

[There's a patient nod at that, chin propped up in the cradle of his palm.]

To me, you're the unusual one. Back home we're all cats. [smiles] I'd say so, but I haven't tested my hearing against a human's. Haven't had need of it.

Woooah, so like -- humans don't exist? That's so interesting! Did we just never exist? Or did we like ... all die off? 'Cause that'd be kinda depressing I guess but it's still really interesting!

[He'll add that to the list of things he's been called, but thank you, thank you.]

They did before, or at least somethin' existed before us. [There's a tug at a lock of long hair, idly twining it around his fingers.] Nobody really knows what happened, but I don't think many cats care.

Ohhhh. I guess that's fair. Not really a thing that comes up in daily conversation, huh?

[ but he wasn't really interested in humans in the first place, so! ] Hey, hey, can I ask if um -- if there's other animal-people where you're from? Are there like dogs and birds and mice and stuff? Or is it just cats? Not that 'just cats' aren't good enough though, 'cause cats are so cool anyway!

Other--? [There's a blink and Bardo shakes his head, smiling.] If there is, I've never met them. And I've been 'round my world a time or two.

Woah, so like, you travel a lot? That's cool, too! What's it like where you're from? What do you do when you travel? Just look around?

I used to, several years ago. [His smile slips a bit, becomes softer, nostalgic.] I used to be a bounty hunter, so I was given more chance to explore, I suppose.

Woah. Bounty hunter. I -- didn't know that was still a real thing, I thought that was kinda like a. Y'know. Thing you only ever hear about.

Oh man, does that mean you've been on like super cool man-hunts and caught dangerous people and brought justice to towns after capturing those villains?

Well, y'could say so I guess. [blink] It's not somethin' glorious or anythin', but it kept us fed and I was good at it so why not?

I dunno, I think it's pretty cool! Kinda like a sorta hero, y'know? Roamin' around, catching bad guys, going from place to place being heroic!

If you put it that way I suppose it is!

[A hero, that's not something he hears often.]
