To everyone still confused, welcome aboard the Tranquility, a colonization vessel located in an alternate universe to your own. My name is Jim Kirk and I'm sure I'm not the only person up here to wish we were meeting under better circumstances. As it stands, you'll be up here with us for a while, and because of that I highly recommend you stay informed. We've got plenty of reading material, but if you want a cliffnotes version, I'm happy to answer your questions.

[moving on, though, for the time being.]

Before the jump we discovered the genetics department. Passengers are not to go down there without clearance. The place is crawling with, for lack of a better word, monsters. These things are lethal. If you want some details as to what they'll do to you, I'm sure medical would be glad to give you the run down. For the time being, that area is considered off limits. Plans for clearing and extracting information from the department are already under way.

[even if Kirk isn't the captain, he says it as though there is no room for argument on this topic. Security plans on clearing out the monsters, if possible, and Cambridge has already made a call for those interested in information retrieval.]

Passengers should exercise caution when moving around the ship. Just last month we had an elevator malfunction that had people lost in the ship for at least a week. I can't stress enough that you need to keep in touch with one another, even if all you're doing is going to your department.

On that note, if you've just arrived and are looking to get involved, every department is looking for help. I head the Gunnery myself, and we're looking for individuals with previous weapons handling experience. If you're interested, give me a shout.

I know that's not what you meant. But that's about the best answer. You want me to lie to you and tell you it's not kind of tiny down here? There's seven of us here, at best we can maybe take Chapel away from SCI. I don't know about any of the new people. So that's eight. [ pause. ] Sulu's technically not engineering or I'd say he'd take it.

I am engineering and any moving into the science department I do is of my own violation and not strictly shift work. I'm good at this. [ which is to say, do you trust me to run a department? ]

Not this time.

Brilliant. Not as though we're not already short-staffed as fuck. Fortunately we're also the best minds on the ship, so you've not much to worry about.

[and it's exactly what Kirk was hoping for. his shoulders have already lost their tension when Kirk flips to video in return.]

You've proven that already. [he nods, because yes he trusts Tony to do what he does best, and if anyone was going to step up to run the place, it should've been Tony.]

You know, I'm pretty sure I've heard you say this once or twice before. Does it ever bother you that you repeat yourself every jump?

[ its a legitimate question on peter's part, because while he doesn't quite doubt kirk's statement of authority, that part's been getting on his nerves. ]

Serious question though, what happens if you wanna join two departments? [ is that even a thing? ]

That almost sounds like a compliment. Listen, it's— I might as well. [ to be fair, Tony isn't exactly the best at sharing things, but he also, maybe annoyingly knows he's got his own limits so he can't have engineering all to himself. what he can do is head it at the department level.

I'd rather say it over and over then have a repeat of the rampant confusion of the first few months.

It's possible to pull shifts in more than one department but your nanites won't respond to more than one coding.

That, and it's better for organization. In a crisis, everyone is called to report to their own department. Having more than one, officially, will cause confusion.

[Few things have the ability to make Kaylee get really serious - this is one of them.] She's runnin'. Not sure how we'd do if the automated stuff shut down, but monitorin' processes is fine for now.

You can probably say giant rats. I'm guessing most people have an internal reference for that.

I've followed every procedure. I wouldn't have said anything if I'd had any doubts.

[but the timing is atrocious and Kirk can't help but wonder if it's really a coincidence]
