[This is a woman who has not appeared on your screens, as yet, ship. But she's not new, exactly... You may have seen the red-head somewhere, around, probably in the background. But now, it seems, she is drawing attention to herself, with a small smile.]

I had hoped there had been a clerical error, on the universal scale, and I would find myself sent home--to any place I call home--when the ship next jumped, but this does not seem to have been the case.

Therefore, I suppose the only sensible thing would be to stop skulking around, and introduce myself. I'm Cordelia Vorkosigan. And if I'm to be... [she skirts around the word 'stuck'] here on-board with everyone, I ought to make myself useful. I have experience in five-space astronavigation, some areas of the natural sciences, and, well... we'll say, a good listening ear. If you need someone to talk to.

I do not believe I have, as yet.

Carolyn Frye is the one to speak to, or Obi-Wan Kenobi. They could use someone of your talents, without question.

I think I shall do that. I find in-person introductions to be nicer, personally. Though that's just personal preference, of course.

No, I quite agree. One can so much more ably demonstrate one's character in person.

It's a shame we're occasionally limited in such a way by the restraints of technology.

Mm, an interesting question. Whether the closer technology comes to verisimilitude, if it is then better? But I think perhaps, for some people, there is no substitute for real life, no matter how good the technology is.

While going straight to the top can often be remarkably efficient, sometimes it's better to know some people with, mm, their boots on the ground, as it were.

I think we all hope for clerical errors, at the very beginning. But the best that can be done is make one's stay more comfortable.

But with a skill set like that, I'm sure the denizens of this ship will fall all over themselves to enlist your aide.

My husband and I were asked to take charge of a place called Sergyar. Partly to get us out of Gregor's hair, I imagine. Though I suppose he has me, at least, well and truly out of things, here.

You were diplomats? Or politicians?

Something more like the latter, though in a very Barrayaran way that still seems strange to my eyes.

Personally I avoid politics, but when your husband, sons, and foster-son are all up to their necks in it, one finds it rather hard to avoid.

Politics do seem impossible to avoid, though perhaps here you can simply turn a blind eye. Is the entire business not to your taste?

As a whole, it sometimes is, and sometimes isn't. The results matter, and we all strive for good ones, but it is the cost of it that I find overwhelms me entirely, from time to time.

I suppose eventually all costs grow too high to pay. Or so I found in my world, anyway.

Yet some costs we pay anyway. Willing or no.

And I would hate to see all that I have paid go to waste because I was too tired to see it through. So we keep going. Or, I would if I was not here, I suppose.

That sort of fortitude is rare, and very admirable in a politician. There should be more of your type.

I was a scientist and a captain and a mother well before I was anything like a politician. I like to that that all those roles helped with that latest one.

And perhaps such will help you aboard this ship. Heaven knows Mister Petrelli could use the competition

Which areas of natural sciences, if you don't mind the question?

Yes. My particular expertise is with jumpships much smaller than this, but the principles should still apply, I believe.

General background in biology, ecology, and terraforming--enough to command a Betan Astronomical Survey Team, though I've not made a considered study of any of them.

The Science Department would probably like to have you. Seek out a man named Spock, if that's your thing.

Otherwise we got room down in Shuttle Bay. Not much navigation going on, but that could always change.

Science Department? Well, I'll consider it. I will be sure to contact this Spock.

So we are allowed to utilize the shuttles then?

I'll tell him to keep an eye out for you, when I see him.

[ but sulu is...well, sulu, so who knows when he'll stop working long enough for that. ]

Not enough fuel. We try to keep the actual use to a minimum to conserve it.

Ah, that would be rather a problem. Still, one that can be overcome, one way or another. Much surveying would not require use of a shuttle at all, at least for the initial looks.

We've got some repaired, if you want to come down and take a look at them. They might not look like anything you've seen before, but once you get the hang of it, they're easy to work with.

I believe I will, thank you very much. I'm still a fast learner, even if I'm not as young as I once was.
