[It's not very often that Asato makes a post to the network, preferring to read and hear what others have to say, offering bits of awkwardly-worded input when he thinks it could be useful. He's not one to draw attention to himself, and though it might seem difficult for a relatively big guy with cat ears and a tail, he tends to manage it too.

He's just a quiet guy minding his own cat business, part of which he's spent in the gardens, carefully tending to something each and every day. The result of nearly a year of watering, trimming, checking and double-checking, is what he moves the video feed to quickly after he sees the feed is on, offering only a quick glimpse of his face.]

I have--these.

["These" being a little pile of some kind of fruit. They're somewhere between a peach, an apple, and a currant, the size of a baseball at their largest, ranging from magenta to purple in color. He can't show it through the feed (much as he wishes he could!), but the scent that's coming from them is a strong mix of sweet, sour, and spicy.]

Kuims. Is what they're called. I planted them. I can't eat all of them, but I don't want them to go bad. [Which is why he's happy to offer some to whoever wants to stop by in the gardens and try them out.]

They're really good. In my world, lots of people like these the best. [A great advertiser he is not, but he's trying, and his enthusiasm is genuine.]

Please come have some. I don't need anything in return for them. Um... They're good in cakes, too. [That...should wrap things up, he figures, so the feed gives a shake, comes back to his face one more time, and clicks off.]

Apples. [Can't say he knows anyone who he associates with apples in any way, but he takes a moment to think about it regardless.]

Did he look like me? I mean... [And he smooths a hand over one of his ears to illustrate what he's talking about. Another cat, maybe?]

[ He nods. ] Yeah. Said you guys live together, too. [ And something about being Asatoa's Sanga, too, but Mason still doesn't fully understand that whole thing. ]

[Asato visibly perks up at that, smiling brighter.] That's Konoe. He lives with me in my room. I'm glad you met him, because he's very special.

So I've heard. [ Whatever way he means that, Mason doesn't care; it's their business and he's fine with it staying that way. ] Any chance he's got anymore apples? Preferably not from the batch he had last time I talked to him.

I'm not sure. I don't think he grows them, and I don't know where he got them from that other time. Maybe from in the gardens somewhere.

[Hmmm. He doesn't remember any day when Konoe came in with a whole batch of apples, so he must've had them elsewhere. Not a big deal, though he wishes he could give Mason a more definitive answer.] I can ask him.

Nah, don't worry about it. I can survive without them. [ Besides, if they're growing in the gardens, he could probably just help himself. ]

Okay. [He's not argumentative or pushy about it, but he'll try to remind himself to ask Konoe about the apples once he gets back to their room.] Konoe hasn't told me he met you. Was that long ago?

Back when the network was done, so... a couple jumps now, I guess. [ He gives a one-shouldered shrug. ] It's not like the conversation was life-altering or anything, so I wouldn't worry about him not mentioning it.

I'm not worried. [There's a quick shake of his head, his small smile reassuring.] Sometimes I thought about introducing him. He's not on security like me, but he's still strong. So it's good to know him.

Well, now you don't have to worry about it. [ They probably would've run into one another eventually, anyway. ] Why isn't he on security?

I don't really know. But I'm not going to make him, if he doesn't want to be. I'd like for him to be safe.

[ He nods. ] That makes sense. It's not like people are required to join if they can or anything, anyway, I was just curious.

That's alright. [It's something he considers at times, too. Being on patrol with him would give him some backup, but at the same time he doesn't want him getting hurt.] But he's very reliable, even if he's not on security. Lots of people are... So it's not even that important. Being on security. [That's just one of those things he knows he can figure out to himself, but trying to explain it to other people gives him trouble, so he frowns just slightly and hopes that he's making sense.]

Right. The title doesn't give us any better of a chance than anyone else that's willing to put their neck out there. [ It just gives them acces to certain things others can't have and they've got way more organization, thanks in very large part to Tyke. ] Pretty sure we'd be fucked without a team, though. [ They do patrols and help make sure people are safe, after all. ]

[He's not used to working in such a big group, so the lone fighter approach still seems just as sensible to him even after more than a year of being here, but Mason does have a point. Even if Asato's not on precisely the same wavelength.] Konoe and I, we're a team. That's what's most important to me.

But I don't regret that I joined security, either. [He tosses a kuim from one hand to the other and then back again, letting his attention fall there for a moment.] Because bad things can always happen. That's why I'm glad these turned out okay.

[Granted, a fruit crop failing isn't remotely on the same level as a horrific monster attack, but still, he had his little cat heart set on this!]

[ Honestly, as long as the smaller teams work with others instead of against them, Mason doesn't really give a shit how people split up. (Unless we're talking splitting up and going into the ship for exploring purposes, then he wants to smack all of them upside the head.) So he nods slightly in agreement, then grins a bit at that last part. ]

Gotta focus on the good stuff while we've got it, even if it's something relatively small; I get that. [ More than a lot of the people here, he'd wager. ]

[Yeah, people who decide to wander off on their own into the depths of the ship, where the monsters are? They may be smart, they may be strong, but they certainly wouldn't have any common sense. Asato may prefer to do his patrols on his own, but he'd never go down there without some backup. Not unless he absolutely had to, either; he wants to keep his area safe but he won't go looking for trouble just out of curiosity or bravado.]

Focus on the good stuff. Right. [He gives Mason a slightly brighter smile and nods.]

And share it too. [Because what good is something like this if he hoards it to himself and lets it all go to waste? Asato's a big eater, not a glutton.] I just hope people will like these. They don't have to, but I'd think that's weird. If they don't.

Everybody's got different tastes but I'm sure you'll find a couple other people, at least, that enjoy 'em. [ It's not like everyone likes apples or bananas, after all. ]

I've found some others. Enough to not have any left over, I think. But there are going to be more next time, because I'm going to learn how to use the gardens the right way. [Because what's all this about crop rotation and rock wool; this is going to take some practice...]

Start off with a few people, get them eating 'em, then let word spread. Next time you've got some, people will be pounding down your door to get some. [ Okay, it might not be that intense, but word of mouth - especially for fresh fruit on a spaceship - will be good for him. ]

I don't want them pounding my door down. [Asato actually looks a little surprised, and his ears twitch back slightly.] But maybe if I leave them in the garden, it'll be okay. They know how to take care of this stuff here.

Yeah, it'll be fine, but I didn't actually mean they'd do that; it's just a saying.

I don't know much about sayings. [A quiet admission, just a little sheepish.] Right now, they wouldn't need to do that anyway. I still have a lot left. You can come have some whenever you want.

[ He nods. ] I'll stop by in a little while.
