Third shot; video

Oh come on! Why isn't it gone yet?

[there's a couple of distinct thunks and Francis turns his device to show a certain mask on his door, now with complimentary arrows sticking out of its mouth and eye sockets

he turns the camera back towards himself, and he's looking ... well, he's looked better. Francis has his black and white clothes now instead of the ship uniform, but they're rumpled and slept in and he looks pretty tired and high-strung himself]

It was bad enough when it showed up before the jump, and then it was still there right after, but it's been like a week. Has anyone even figured out where the heck they came from?

[he glares, then sets the device down to retrieve his arrows, putting them back in his quiver]

Whatever. I'm going back to the Oxygen Gardens until it's gone.

[The gym she'd sent direction to is the one closest to the SEC office - one that, while other people still use it, Taylor considers to be the team's. She's already there, shifting some of the equipment around at one side of the area to give a better space for this demonstration. All six of her dogs are scattered around the gym, some seemingly napping while others freely wander, only a couple sticking closer to where she is.]

[She gives a small upward jerk of her chin in greeting.]

Hey.

[She drops the mat she'd been moving and brushes her hands off, moving towards him, one of the dogs following close on her heels. A look at the bow he's carrying, and maybe she should have suggested doing this at the shooting range.]

Don't think I got your name.

[She still doesn't look particularly fazed by the bow, and maybe that's her failing, considering she's never seen someone seriously use one before. Not that she's expecting him not to know what he's doing with it, way he's holding it.]

Your combat skills. [A jerk of her head back to the area she'd been preparing, the mats, a couple of standing punching bags set up to act as targets. She'd give anything for some proper dummies, but it wasn't the first area the ship failed to provide on.] Hand-to-hand, first, you know any. We try to keep weapon usage to a minimum.

[She doesn't look at the bow as she says it, even though that's obviously what she's referring to.]

Yeah.

[She nods, turning to lead the way over to the mats.]

If you've done any training before, you can just show me what you run through usually. Or how you'd deal in a fight.

[There were people on the team that were fighters without any official background - herself included. She wasn't interested in letting skills like that go to waste just because they'd never received a stamp of approval that wasn't relevant on the ship anyway.]

[Hand-to-hand is most of what they need, but she'll take other combat experience. It wasn't like they didn't have training going on that could let him build on the skills he already had. Not really the greatest conversationalist on a good day, she concentrates on observing his movements, not on talking. Runs him through some standard sequences, keeping her own attacks loose and light, her defence high, but deliberately leaving openings here and there. It was a basic assessment, not a fight, and she wanted to see how he dealt rather than who would win.

When she feels she's seen enough, she steps out, one hand up briefly to indicate a stop.]

Okay, good. [There's a pause, thinking, and then she tilts her head towards the bow.] Guessing I don't really need to check out how good you are with that. [It wasn't like she took people to the shooting range to see how they were with guns. If he carried it, he could use it. There was another concern, though.]

This robot thing, you gonna be able to get past it?

[It wasn't like she was particularly fond of them herself, had one run-in back home she almost hadn't walked away from. But they had humanised on board the ship, and him having a problem with them could easily be a problem for her.]

[The look she levels him with is steady, considering. It was what she'd hoped to hear, really. Couldn't expect anyone to put aside all of their prejudices just to sign up, but they needed to acknowledge them and not act on them. The team was about protecting people, and that meant not giving SEC clearance to just anyone, but she couldn't be too picky either. They'd have no team at all, if she did that. She could give him a chance. If he stepped out of line, she wouldn't be lenient either.

She nods, finally, pulling her comms out of her pocket and sending him through a link to the sign up sheet.]

Get your name on that, your tattoo will change over some time tonight. Then you can come by the office and we'll get you on the rota. [A beat.] Maybe put you down for some training, brush up your hand-to-hand.

[That has her frowning a little, but the whole thing of recruiting him had started from him trying to work independently when he wasn't on security. She couldn't stop people running their own teams, wouldn't even want to, really, but if she didn't get it set up that they were working together, they could end up tripping over each other. And she couldn't allow that, not if it was going to tangle them up and potentially cost people their lives.]

We run twelve hour patrol shifts, couple of days downtime. I'd need you on your patrol when you're meant to be, and you don't leave it without letting someone know. And I need the whole team ready to respond if I give an incident call.

[Otherwise he was free to do what he wanted, and she gives a shrug.]

Whole point of the SEC team is to protect people. Can't see how your team would be doing that at some time when we aren't.
