[ Carolyn is, as usual, in the shuttle bay. Today she's out among the shuttles instead of in one of the maintenance rooms, the windows -- the only windows on the ship -- behind her. She figures actually showing people the stars might be a good attention grabber. ]

Tranquility, this is Carolyn Fry. For those of you who are new here, I'm a member of the flight crew and both pilot and captain a spaceship back home. I also have training sessions to help acclimatize people to living in space, which is the main purpose of this broadcast.

For those of you just joining us, there are videos and transcripts of the previous session. [ And ding!, here they are. ] They've been added to the anonymous information post, so this may not be the first time you've seen them if you've checked that out. In addition to these, we're going to have another session. I'm attaching what we'll be going over now.

[ EVACUATION PROCEDURES: Now the formal evacuation protocol for the ship, passengers will go over what to do in the event of emergency evacuation, including what items are considered necessities and what they may be asked to leave behind, shuttle boarding, securing themselves in the shuttle, and the importance of not panicking. Pilot training on request; talk to Carolyn after class.
EMERGENCY BOARDING DRILL
GENERAL SAFETY: Things You Should Not Do On A Spaceship, including but not limited to fire safety, weapons safety, and equipment safety. Includes information on how these things can be used effectively without damaging the ship or yourself, the possible consequences of using things improperly, and the proper steps to take if you should notice something unsafe aboard the ship.
TRANQUILITY-SPECIFIC SAFETY: Things You Should Not Do On The Tranquility, including but not limited to wandering the deeper parts of the ship to try and explore, reverse-hacking or seeking out unknown entities, and jump safety. ]

Like it says, these evacuation procedures are now the official evac procedures for the entire ship. Anyone who was with us last jump may recognize how vital that sort of thing could be in the future, and Commander Resnik asked me to write them up formally. That means that until further notice, if we have to get off this ship in an emergency, this is what we'll be doing. It's important to know and important to practice, and I encourage all of you to show up. Same with the other safety items we'll be going over.

Like the last two sessions, we'll be having this one in the shuttle bay -- so don't bother the flight crew while we're in there. We have a lot to do and not enough people to do it with, so let's just focus on what we're in there to do.

[ And Carolyn's used up her quota of trying to be a captain for the main post, so she dips her head at the communicator in a quick nod. ]

I've never heard of Lyrium. They run on electricity produced by the ship.

[ Azari comes and diligently listens to all the information, and pays close attention to the evacuation procedures. Afterwards, he approaches Carolyn. ]

Excuse me, ma'am? I wanted to see about being trained to fly the shuttles.

[suddenlycaptain]

[ She'd watched him -- watched all of them, made sure they each understood what it was she was saying and showing them (easier said than done, with some of them). He'd paid close attention, and she nods to him. Just one thing- ]

Carolyn's fine. Or Fry. [ Just not ma'am. She'll take Captain too, she might a well get used to it. ]

Do you have any piloting experience already? It doesn't have to be spacecraft.

I'm guessing these shuttles don't run on an eezo core.

No. There's not enough in them to get far at all, to be honest -- even with the evac procedures, we'll still need a good amount of luck to get picked up if we end up in the middle of deep space with no shipping lanes around.

[ Which isn't an answer and she knows it, so Carolyn presses her lips together before sighing and continuing. ]

We know of one for sure, but unknown passengers who try to tempt people out farther into the ship could be just as dangerous. There have been deaths here. Murders.

Might as well do it before the next disaster.

[ Whilst Quinlan might not look all that impressed, he is. It's there, somewhere. Deep down inside. Very deep down. ]

Now we can hope that we don't have to use them.

Yeah. [ Or if they do, that they won't be in the middle of nowhere. ] I don't know what the hell happened last jump, but let's hope it doesn't happen again.

[ It's only natural that Rico came to space training. The word 'training' is involved. She listened diligently and would have taken notes if she had the proper implements for doing so. Instead, she focused on memorizing as much as she could, but there are a few things she needs clarified. ]

Umm, excuse me, Signora Fry?

[ She grips tightly onto her violin case as though it grounds her, because actually, it does. ]

[ Signora throws her of and Carolyn blinks for a minute. There's an almost comical moment of "is she talking to me", but then she shakes her head (get a grip, Fry) and replies. ]

When are these training sessions available?

It's usually just one session per jump, since I have other things to do. Unfortunately, the shuttles don't fix themselves. But each session is recorded, so if you can't make it, you can still watch that and get in touch if you have questions.

Depends on where the jump lands us. If we're lucky, there could be a space station, a planet, or a shipping lane nearby where another ship will cross paths with us.

[Anders is there, of course! Seated beside Amell, as if one is the other's babysitter; hard to tell which would be the sitter and which the baby. Daylen's got the baby face, but Anders has the tantrums.

He's on his best behavior for space training, though! Until question-and-answer, and then he just has to ask -- though he yields pride of place to Amell's more basic and pressing questions --]

Would you mind going over the subject of space radiation in detail?

[ Space radiation. Anders, you're driving her to drink. ]

What do you want to know about it? That might be another one that someone in SCI could answer better.

Jack didn't know there was a window on the ship. This is new and exciting news for him, even if he really couldn't care less about all this safety stuff. He snorts as he reads over the To Do List.]

If you've gotta teach people t'use guns safely, they shouldn't be using 'em.

I agree. But gun safety's different on a spaceship than it is on Earth, because it's not just trying not to shoot yourself or someone you don't want to be shooting.

A ship like this has a lot of parts we don't want destroyed.

Off the record, because I'm sure this isn't something you're going to want to your students with, but what happens after we evacuate?

And we don't get picked up?

If we still have fuel, I'd probably say we split the shuttles up, each go in a different direction until we run out of fuel trying to find something. If one does, they can send people out for everyone else. If not...

Well, we've bought ourselves time, but that's it.
