Project 002 // Video

[Good afternoonish, Tranquility]

Have we all settled down from the jump? I see we have new people on board. I'm Jane Foster, and I'm an astrophysicist with the Science Division. So apparently the jumps the ship does will also bring new people aboard. Though really the gravity couch experience should be a one time thing.

That brings interesting ideas about how the engine affects time and space and how Einstein, bless his heart, really had no idea, since I don't think E=mc² really stands up to this test, since it was explaining how an object at rest requires infinite energy to achieve the speed of light, and well, we apparently moved quite a ways in a blink of an eye? Though other aspects of relativity could still apply, since they allow for such things as wormholes, which can quite possibly be created.

Would anyone have anything to add to this? It's rather rough, I apologize. Also, do we have any idea of where we are in relation to our last known stop? I'm wondering how far we traveled since Tansei.

[Hey, here's a voice that's new to the network.]

Most large-scale space travel is achieved using Faster Than Light, or FTL, technology. This essentially involves the 'folding' of space, physically reducing the distance between any two points and creating a corridor through space that links them together.

Whether that is how this ship works or not would require a physical examination of the jump drive. Has this been preformed by anyone?

The jump drive operates by creating singularies in space-time. Essentially, custom-made wormholes. So the actual rate of travel doesn't need to approach anywhere near FTL. [ A beat and then Capa exhales. It's not a sigh, but it is a definite pause. ] I'm not going to even touch how small the margin of error has to be in order to make those calculations.

More or less the same way that ships from my world move, then. I'm hardly surprised.

[There's only so many feasible ways of space travel.]

[ Capa clears his throat, a little awkwardly. ] Capa's fine. [ He's used to being on a ship with other doctors and doctorates, so it's strange to suddenly hear the title. ] Just Capa.

As for the amount of energy — it'd easily outstrip even the most generous output estimates I could probably come up with, given present technologies back home. And that's only considering an equation of Point A to Point B. The last two jumps have managed to not only move the ship, but everyone in it — from their respective continuums to the ship itself. Even if those individual singularities are small, the introduction of each one has an exponential affect on energy needed. It— [ A scraping noise as he rubs his chin. ] —it's a wonder that system even has that much excess energy to burn in the first place.

[ honestly. thor has no idea about anything jane is saying. but it's jane and she's here and that's something, isn't it? maybe things aren't as bad as he first surmised (but, then again, maybe they are—he doesn't know).

slowly, his anger and confusion begin to ebb away. at least for now. jane is a nice distraction from all that and he's alright with it. for now. he must speak with her at once—if only he could figure out how to use this thing.

which, of course, he does get the video turned on by a stroke of luck and he's probably a little too close, but whatever. ]

Jane. [ ...well. he should probably say something else... ... ... ... ] Where are you? [ please don't say inside the machine. ]

It definitely falls under non-native technology in the universes Dr. Foster and I are from. For me, we've managed to the sun and back. For her I'm not even sure they've gotten as far as Mars. In either case, interstellar travel's still decades out, maybe more.

The tech's got something of a learning curve for us. Still, even after a month on board.

Many times, yes.

I can't speak to the efficiency of the engine compared to other ships I've been on, however.

[Since she wasn't here for the actual jump's start.]

Well, if you require any assistance with calibrations or calculations I offer my full assistance.

[Sixes and eights were both particularly adept with handling engines, after all. They still worked better with ships they could interface smoothly with, but it was -- still possible, if uncomfortable.]

Have you spoken to any of the engineers? Mace or— [ Capa falters when he realizes that he doesn't know any of the other engineers personally. ] —I know Mace. He might be able to provide a couple insights. Specifically on the ship's power grid.

There're no schematics left on any of the terminals, so they've had to work blind more or less.

Building is a good start. I may have-- ended up with some parts. We'll see what we can put together, no?

Let's call me a ... political activist. I've got passing knowledge of many subjects, though.

[This might be an under-exaggeration.]

But yes, I'm new.

My name is Natalie Faust.

[ Capa has to take a moment to process this and when he speaks again, there's a touch of incredulity in his voice. Or maybe it's amusement. It's hard to tell. ]

A political activist qualified to do calculations in quantum mechanics. [ An exhale like an impressed laugh. ] That's a first.
