[Kurt is curled up on his bed, looking sleepy and ruffled. He's gnawing on one end of a pen thoughtfully, looking a bit vexed.]

I can't sleep.

Normally I'd pass the time working on my play, but I'm having a bit of writer's block. I'm just--not sure how to end it. The play is about the Tranquility and the things that have happened here, from a--unique perspective, so the story hasn't ended in real life yet. But the play needs to end...

I could reunite the star-crossed lovers at the end, but it needs to be realistic. [Right.] I don't want the story to lose its impact. But I don't think the main character should end up alone, either.

[Hrm.] A happy ending? A tragic one? Bittersweet? I'm just not sure what direction to go in.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps true stories don't have endings. Only parts that end and others that begin.

Yes! I have been since shortly after I arrived, actually. It's had quite a few, ah--unexpected twists and turns, but I think I've managed to weave a cohesive story.

If it is a story that you are writing then it can end in any way that you want. You should not ask for the opinions of others.

But in most stories if there are lovers that are separated by fate and war then they are reunited in the end. If it is a story that happened for true then it might end tragically or bittersweet as you say, but still they will find one another. If it is a story that was only made up, then it will end happily.

So if your ending is yet unwritten you should make it a happy one.

Why not bittersweet? I think those are the best sorts of endings, to be honest. The ones where not everyone is happy, but they're happy enough. I think that reflects life best.
