002

So give or take a month [or a couple of weeks] and thank whoever runs this boat, we finally got some movies. They've got a swell soundtrack and an even better star. I know some of you have actually heard of Captain America [his voice takes on a little patina of pride here] but he was a terrible actor.

Seriously, he couldn't stop looking at the camera.

And the one movie where they asked him to kiss the dame at the end, I heard he practically tripped over himself to avoid it.

[Okay, it's entirely possible that Howard is making that up]

I built a projector, and Bucky wants to host a viewing, so if you might be a fan of the Star-Spangled Man, or if you just don't have anything to do, come over.

[And look at the projector I built out of spare things I found lying around.]

It's better than sitting around thinking about the physical impossibilities of interstellar travel.

[Or the sons you have. Plural, now. Doesn't everyone do that?]

You got a brother? A kind of dim one?

I talked to him, Miss Stone, but I don't think he's interested in anything else.

I actually sort of like talking about physics and interstellar travel -- it really isn't at all impossible -- but a movie night does sound like a fantastic idea. What sorts of films have you got?

You ought to at least upgrade to Tomonaga, Feynman, and Hawkings.

I don't think I've taken the time to see a film in months. Black and white will do just fine. You're from the...forties?

I just might take you up on that. Usually I'm being told to tone down the 'science talk'. Might be nice to talk to someone who's actually interested for a change.

More like 2008. But I...know a little something about your decade.

[ She hasn't, but she knows what it sounds like when a person introduces himself expecting you to be impressed by it. So she makes a mental note to look up the name when (if) she gets home again, just in case. ]

Nice to meet you, Mr. Stark. I'm Toshiko Sato. So you're a scientist?

My grandfather emigrated. I was born in England and raised in Osaka and London both. My parents are both RAF. [ She can't help throwing in that bit of information -- she remembers what it felt like to be the only Asian in a room full of World War II servicemen. ] And you're an American.

Well you can't just tell someone you dabble in things and not tell them what those things are.

Oh, I don't think I ever saw the one where he was supposed to kiss a dame. ...Though that does sound like him.

[Wow dad, he's not dim!]

Count me in.

[God yes, give him something to poke fun at his Steve forever please. He'll consider the logistics of how his father could know Steve and still allow him and Gregory to be born at the correct time later.]

It's beautiful again, or at least it was last I was there. Which admittedly hasn't been since I was a little girl. I liked Osaka better myself, though, especially the views. I guess we don't get much of that here, do we?

Never been but it sounded interesting. Queens, I mean, though that actually counts for engineering too. I've been wanting to get down there and get my hands dirty. Are you there right now?

I enjoy talking about physics. Can't say that I know anything about Captain America, though.

Would you kindly list the movies in your possession?

I've never seen an old-fashioned projector up close. Sounds intriguing.

My friend Ianto just made a fresh pot of the best coffee in the universe. Fancy a cup?

[ Alayne gives a small, worried frown. ]

Was the talk unpleasant?

[Yeah, he's just laughing.] That's Steve.

[ okay, so he doesn't understand a lot of what you just said. so he'll just focus on trying to make it easier. ]

Sorry - movies? What are those? And who's Captain America?
