[She takes a second to straighten up, a little, the confused look on her face readjusting to the cool professional mask she puts on while in Grey Warden mode.]

My name is Bethany, and I am a Grey Warden. If anyone is familiar with my order I would... greatly appreciate someone putting me in contact with them.

[She hesitates a moment, looking a little uncertain, before adding-]

...Thank you.

[aaand disconnect.]

I'd appreciate it. Admittedly, we tend to stick out like sore thumbs where I'm from, so Maker only knows if that will remain true here.

I have met several Grey Wardens, though it is not one of them.

I know the Grey Warden, yes, and its foolish Grey Warden counterpart, and their companions. I have seen the Orlesian Warden as well. But they are the only Wardens in Ferelden, so where does it come from?

The Grey Warden? You must mean the Hero of Ferelden. I had heard rumours that she travelled with a golem but...

[she frowns, the rest of what Shale said sinking in]

What do you mean "the only Wardens in Ferelden?" The order has built up again significantly since the end of the Blight.

[ TIMELINE CONFUSION TIME: GO ]

The Blight has not yet ended. We are still trying to decide who the king is.

[ EYEROLL or the golem equivalent, which... is really very creepy, actually. ]

A person "familiar" with the Grey Wardens? Really, Anders. Though thanks to you I suppose they won't welcome me back with open arms, provided we ever get off this... boat.

[A welcome reminder, that. They're on a ship floating in the Void; any Wardens who'd like to drag Anders back to Vigil's Keep would first have to locate Thedas itself, and then find a way to get there.]

I can't say I'm surprised you know my name, but I didn't recall sitting for any portraits. And I'm certain I'd remember meeting you.

[Because you're cute, Bethany.]

[Flirting overlooked by the fact that this is not funny, Anders.]

All right, you've had your fun, but this 'pretending not to know Bethany' prank isn't funny anymore.

[She really does expect him to remember her, doesn't she. And she's from Thedas, and she became a Warden, obviously some time after he did since there were no Wardens left in Ferelden when he became one, because they'd all been massacred by the intelligent darkspawn, and her accent's clearly Fereldan, and --

oh, Maker. There are very few times in Anders' life that are so blurred he doesn't recall who he met when. And there tends to be a certain kind of person who remembers him from those occasions memory has effaced.]

You ... didn't happen to frequent the Pearl?

[He essays a small and hopeful smile.]

[Garrett has at least managed to learn how to wrangle these devices into only speaking to one other.

Anders is greeted with Garrett's pale, drawn face as he says, with great emphasis:]

[Nathaniel, Delilah, Bethany -- all of them Andrastian names, one supposes? From the Chant? A popular naming trend in Ferelden, at any rate.

Belatedly, Anders realizes just how pale Garrett is, just how distraught he looks and sounds. The fearless Champion of Kirkwall, this shaken ... of course he's shaken. It's Bethany, the sister he lost, the one he couldn't protect. Garrett has only told Anders a thousand little details of Bethany's life, a hundred stories. His mage sister, his baby sister. Dead on the road to Lothering. An ugly death, death by ogre.]

[Totally inadequate apology. He means it, for what that's worth.]

[To Bethany, to Garrett, to anyone.]

How could you have known?

[There's a resemblance, yes, but Bethany always had a softer look to her, more Amell than he or Carver. Garrett smiles wanly at Anders and shrugs: all will be well, somehow, because Garrett handles these things and if anything is going to make him pull himself together--

He already looks more like the Champion of Kirkwall, under the grief. His siblings were always the best at making him protective. Anders is a partner; Bethany is his younger sister. They need him very differently.]

Why are you sorry, anyway, it's--Maker's breath, Anders, how many people get chances like this? This is a good thing. I always told you that she'd love you. See?

[No, because she's dead. Dead, and younger in his mind. The age Carver was when he met Anders, minus a year; and most of Garrett's stories were about little Bethany, younger still, a pigtailed child.]

I meet lots of people, in my line of work.

You'd... remember me. [SUDDENLY THAT LINE IS EVEN LESS FUNNY THAN IT WAS WHEN HE SAID IT.]

[All mirth is vanished.] You don't strike me as the sort of girl it would be easy to forget. [A thin and tattered excuse for gallantry, offered for courtesy's sake, wrapped around a crumbling brick of truth.]

So you're a Grey Warden?

[Brilliant change of topic, Anders.]

[How did he miss this? How did he--possibly miss this? When did she come out? Obviously after he and Anders did, but--oh, Maker.

Garrett sits with both hands over his mouth until Dog nudges into him, concerned, and only then does he cry--because he hasn't cried in front of Bethany since their father died and he won't do it now, and there is part of him that does whisper Fade vision, yes. But what Fade vision would claim his sister to be a Grey Warden, which makes no sense at all, except...she's obviously older. Older and alive, and whatever is going on Garrett makes sure his eyes are well-dried and all is in perfect order before he breathes deep and turns on his device.]

Good of you to say hello to your own brother like this, Bethany. Honestly.

[She's got a big smile for her brother, relief evident on her face when she sees he's here, as well as Anders. Definitely not alone, which is good to know.]

I'm sorry, was I supposed to search every inch of this massive ship for you before using the magical communication device?

I suppose I'm relieved you didn't see me naked.

[Emotionally or otherwise and it's Bethany and she's smiling at him and how can he possibly--

He breathes deep.]

Say-- [Be casual, yes] --being brought to the Void seems to do a number of a trick on our memories. What's the last thing you recall, so I know where we stand? Year and all.

[She notices that something seems just a little... off, but she's going to chalk it up to this strange new place, for the moment.]

We were fleeing Kirkwall. The last thing I remember is standing on the deck of Isabela's ship and hoping it didn't meet the same fate as her last one.

Oh, good. We're about on the same page, then. I must be a bit earlier than you.

[He reaches down to scratch Dog's ears, and at that the mabari finally rears up and barks excitedly at the screen, which allows Garrett to laugh over something honest.]

Looks like someone else missed you, hm? Down, we'll see Bethany soon. [He glances up again, much more composed. (Almost letting himself be giddy, because if this is real this is a miracle of the Maker's blessings and this time--he's not the untried mage in his twenties any longer, he can keep her.)]

Where are you? We'll come there. These things are demonic, I swear.

Dog! [She's pleased to see that slobbery face.]

Oh. Deck 10, room 163. These seem to be my lodgings, for the interim.
