Her hair is down and framing her face, and she offers a warm smile to the camera, as well as a little wave.] Hi, there. Name's Kaylee. I guess I'm gonna be stuck here for a spell, and a couple people told me I should be joining engineering. I've never seen a ship like this, but I'm a mechanic. Been working with engines practically my whole life.

And Carolyn said you might want some help getting some more shuttles running?

[She pauses, and glances around behind her for a moment.] Also, me and Lucrezia were talking - anybody got some paint? This place could use some more cheeriness. Maybe some flowers, you know? I like flowers.

Sadly, I only have charcoals and pastels. If I knew I would have ended up here, I would have thrown some paint in my purse.

[She looks down and away for a moment, then pokes her head back up with a hand-painted sign that says "Kaylee's Room" on it. It's got - you guessed it - some cheery flowers and such on it.] Like this?

You don't think maybe flowers would enhance the bizarreness? I feel like they'd clash with the rest of... it.

What's bizarre about it? It's just a ship. Lots of ships where I come from. They get pretty dreary though, with all the metal and not much color. Flowers just make it more colorful.

Oh, so spaceships are a totally normal part of the day where you're from. That must be nice for you.

I can see your point, but I can also see that this ship was manufactured in hell. I'm not sure that's the kind of thing you can just toss a throw rug over.

[ He doesn't sound or look like he's trying to be mean, just a bit... well, excessively skeptical, maybe with a side of pity for her (in his opinion) naive optimism. ]

If I could get the paint I'd be happy to do that for ya. Yellow's a real nice color to have out in the black.

I, uh... I actually got some paint recently. [Stole it, is the more accurate term, from when they had been visiting the Strela outpost. Eh, they weren't making any use of it.] You're welcome to some of it, if you'd like.

[He pauses. Awkward turtle, and then:]

Sure was, Serenity is my girl, she's the best ship in the 'verse. [No awkward! Just friendly!]

[On ANY OTHER DAY Simon might have found this a little bit silly. Today, however, he is stuck on a strange spaceship and somehow Kaylee's perpetual (and familiar) cheerfulness is exactly what he needs.]

Me an' Wash - Wash is Serenity's pilot - we once fixed up an old scrapped ambulance shuttle from parts we got in a junkyard. Worked like a dream.
