Heyyyyyy, this is Ned.

[ Heyyyyyy, that's not Ned. That's a golden retriever panting into the screen. The Pie Maker eventually leans into view while the dog moves aside. Definitely a dog with manners. ]

How many of us on board have... pets? [ —Can't quite pinpoint the right word. He really means Digby as a friend rather than a pet. "Pet" doesn't sit well on his tongue, a taste he would easily spit and replace with... "a best friend." The lightened mood in his expression is evident, reunited and doomed together in space, but it's just a little odd how carefully distanced he is from the dog, clasping his hands together. An allergy seems to be the logical excuse. ]

I'm sure Digby would enjoy the company. He does at home, but you know, that's not really the case anymore. [ A pause. Something he had forgotten: ] Yeah, to the newcomers... Ned. Digby. [ A bark. ] Hi.

...I got a cat. Who does well around dogs.

[ Ned! Needless to say, Alayne's face lights up to see him. (It's been far too long since they last spoke.) ]

You've company, Ned the Pie-Maker, [ she says, quite obviously, but cheerfully. ]

So this is a dog you had at home?

I've, uh... got birds. That's it, really.

[Probably for the best, since two of the five are gone now. Murphy isn't sure if it's something that he's done wrong with them, or if it's just the environment not being that great for pets. In which case, he does tend to concern for their well-being on the ship from time to time.

[Most probably wouldn't think it, but Murphy does have a soft spot for animals. Whether it's from time spent in solitude, or the fact that being surrounded by people who are more monstrous in nature... There's a kind of simple innocence to them that he can appreciate.

[Like dogs. He's really missed dogs.]

Three chickens and a cow. [ ... that counts, right? ]

They seem like they would be a hassle to manage. Why do people keep them?

Oh. [ Oh. ]

Well, I can say the same about Digby. He's more of a sit around, lay around dog.

[Well. Lodewijk liked to hang out with Japan's dog... but this Digby is way bigger than Pochi on his fattest, fuzziest day. So it's a reluctant Netherlands who turns on the feed.]

What kinda company.

[Will he eat my bunny in other words.]

You've met Grey Wind, but I would not call him a pet.

Bozo hasn't met anyone he hasn't liked.

Don't know if he's just stupid, or an attention whore.

[Smirk. Hey Ned. Long time no talk.]

[ The Pie Maker smiles a little wider, if that's possible. Smile creases smoothing out as soon as Digby pokes out his snout, sniffing for attention. ]

Alay— [ Another bark. Blinking back at Digby, the dog giving him a vague stare, he... Oh! Now picking up a plate out of view, he leans over to gently place it on the floor. Cautious movements from both Digby and Ned, like a well-practiced dance that dictates "no touching." ]

Doing good, I hope?

Yes, a— [ A friend since childhood, he almost slips. How old would that make Digby now? ] A friend I'm glad to have with me. Even here.

[ Possibly strange, most certainly curious — Alayne's eyes linger on the odd little dance between Ned and his hound, Digby. Oftentimes owners would reward their pets with a pat on the head or a scritch of the chin, but there was none of that here between master and companion. (Her mind wanders absently to Ned's rules. The ones he gave her when she woke with blood on her dress and pain blossoming in her belly.)

Her expression does not waver, not even for a moment. ] The ninth jump finds me in good health. And Lady, as well as the birds.

And you? The Tranquility has been generous with you, it seems. Digby, was it — the name you spoke? [ Alayne squares herself and then delivers to the camera with an exaggerated loftiness. ] Greetings, Ser Digby. Finally may we make acquaintance.

You're keeping a bit of a distance.

[ And the Pie Maker simply thinks, "oh, a fan of birds." ]

Names?

[ ...

The silence is broken with Digby's low whine. ]

Here?

Well... ye... uh...

They're friends. Even though we might not really be able to communicate, they're good company. Loyal. [ He gives Digby a small glance, who does the same. ] It doesn't make anything feel like a hassle. Not at all.

Sitting and, or being lazy company.

[ Digby wouldn't hurt a fly unless it was some sort of poisonous fly trying to assassinate his owner. ]

Yeah. Got 'em on the outpost.

What would you call him, then?

Lazy, huh. [That gets a snort.] What if the company's small an' defenseless.

[He leans back enough to demonstrate, roughly, Lodewijk's size with his hands. Bun is tiny.]

Bozo? [ Derogatory? Or is it a loving derogatory? The Pie Maker won't say much, just nibble the thought away at his bottom lip. ]

I'm sure they would enjoy each other then. It's the same for Digby, just... one person who gave him mean vibes. I suppose animals can sense that in a person.

[...Wait, shit. What?]

Er, oh. Right. Their names. [People tend to have those. For their pets.

[Murphy stops as he tries to remember them:] It's, uh. Jory, Luwin, and Mordane

[Obviously, he wasn't the one who thought them up.]

[ There's the sudden swoosh of Digby's tail, apparently making some sense of the greeting, even with a polite yelp back. Digby retreats to his plate as The Pie Maker ruffles at his hair, blowing a strand of his face. ]

Things have been good, Digby has been around for... [ He makes a face. ] A month? Chuck and I are glad to have him around.

[ Well, that was sudden. ]

Yeah. [ Yeah? ]
