001. A second introduction; video

[ Several people on board have met Data already, however after this jump there have been a few small changes, namely when he activates the viewsceen there is a large ginger tabby cat taking up most of the shot. ]

Down, Spot.

[ Even after all this time, Data still doesn't have his cat 'trained'. It is a bone of contention with him, actually. He reaches up and lifts the cat into his lap, frowning. He should be happy, but having Spot on board causes all kinds of issues. ]

I discovered Spot in the Jump Bay shortly after my arrival, however I am at a loss as to how I am to be expected to convince her to behave herself without the necessary feline treats. Nor am I certain how to provide her meals, given the absence of a replicator on board; Spot requires quite specific dietary supplements.

[ The cat wriggles out of Data's arms and jumps out of view, and for a moment Data's eyes follow after her before returning to the screen. ]

Further to having been delivered my violin, I wish to propose a meeting of the musicians on board. Aboard the Enterprise, a short recital was often performed for those interested in attending each Friday, and it may not be outside the bounds of possibility to do much the same thing here, should there be sufficient interest.

[ He frowns. ] I have been searching for some time for a formula which sufficiently provides the necessary protein and mineral requirements while also being appealing. Following development into three hundred seventy four feline supplements, Spot has found only seven to her liking.

Right. Finicky. Well, couldn't you like--I'm sure with all the junk around here something could be built. You know, refine from stuff in the garden and the kitchens, whip it together--[Her hands flutter as if in code for 'science is awesome'.]

I'd help. [Not out of altruism. But because this guy is a robot and she can get closer for study, and then he'd owe her. Maybe he'd let her open him up. This fucking ship. Is so wicked rad.]

I am certain that you are correct. After my years of pet ownership, I have come to understand that Spot has what has been termed 'a mind of her own.' It is most unusual.

Most cats are like that. They're not quite as social; they'll do what they want because they want to do it. Still, if she likes you, she might be a little more accommodating.

It is surprising to me that they seem to survive the Jumps. [ He tilts his head for a moment, considering that fact as something to examine beside the things they'd learned about the creatures in the science department. ] And thank you. I am sure that Spot appreciates the praise. Don't you, Spot?

It could be a case of luck or perhaps a more scientific explanation. [Not like she would try to find out for herself but it was something worth thinking about.]

You're welcome. I have a cat back home myself and sometimes I wonder if she will ever turn up here one day.

Spot was born on a starship, has served on two, and has been planetbound on precisely one occasion in the eleven years since her birth. [ Star Trek, continuing the efforts to pollute the environments of other planets in the same vein as past explorers. ] You are a recent arrival?

Yeah, just got here. Same as Spot, I guess. Not as much traveling experience, though.

[Anders is still getting the hang of these comm devices. He dislikes typing, and does it two-fingered when he must, but he's no more averse to the communicator itself than he is to indoor toilets. Convenience is incentive enough, and it's not as though the comms aren't user-friendly, at least when it comes to this basic functionality.]

[He's a thin man, face angular, dirty-blond hair scraped back in half a ponytail, and he wears a ridiculously feathery coat over his standard-issue shipwear. At the moment, his face is alight with wonder.]

You had recitals on the Enterprise?

[ after his time. another person from alternate timelines or the future or however it has to be classified and sulu peers curiously at him over the device, trying to size him up. ]

Each Friday, over two sessions to fit the duty rosters. We had a number of talented musicians on board, no less so Captain Picard, who would join us on occassion.

Sir! Sir, I mean--uhm. [ Calm. you're a soldier, Chase. Act like one. She straightens herself up, salutes smartly, and gets down to business: ]

Pleased to make your acquaintance, sir! I'm Chase Kilgannon, Starfleet ensign! [ Well...honourary. It still counts, right? ]

[ He studied her for a moment, and considers that there are some species who age in the opposite direction to others, some who age incredibly slowly, and it is not altogether unlikely that she is indeed an ensign.

Except that she does seem rather...exhuberant. Even for an ensign. ]

Unlike her predecessor, the Enterprise-D was a Galaxy class starship designed to house a complement of 1014 crewmembers, their families, companions and supporting personel. It was intended that crewmembers could continue their lives despite their assignments.

I believe Admiral Archer himself encouraged the behaviour, following his service on board the Enterprise NX-01.

Fascinating.

[ the brown of his gaze moves over the man's features. the impassivity he finds there is uniquely comforting- and yet he imagines that this is seldom the case in other social interactions. perhaps he may inquire further, at a later date. ]

Shall I presume that mission objectives remain consistent, or is the Enterprise-D meant for more- diplomatic ventures than exploratory?
