[Adrian faces the camera in his comm device straight on, a pleasant half-smile on his face. He's dressed in a finely made (if somewhat boldly purple) suit over a black turtleneck, and his hair is perfectly styled. All in all, he looks very much like someone who's used to being in front of a camera, and not at all bothered by his unfamiliar surroundings.]

I wish to extend my greetings to my fellow shipmates. My name is Adrian Veidt, and I've just recently arrived on the Tranquility. While I understand that the social and economic system is somewhat different here than what I'm used to, I would like to hope that I can contribute in some small way. I have a background in the hard sciences as well as in marketing and business, and I have some skills I could lend to whatever security enforcement may be in place as well. If any of you have information on how I might best apply my time and abilities in a manner that would benefit us all, I would be very appreciative of your assistance.

I've been given to reason as of yet to be unfriendly. What is it they say about catching flies?

I wouldn't know, I usually just swat them.

But you see, I'm a pacifist, so I prefer other methods.

I never saw much of a point to pacifism. Seems awfully boring.

I knew someone once who would have said the same thing. Of course his idea of intellectual stimulation was cheap beer and a lad mag.

[ asa, by contrast, looks.. extremely shy. 8| he offers a small, quiet smile, the little silver charms wound around his antlers chiming as he tilts his head. ]

It's lovely to meet you, Mister Veidt. I'm Asa Ridley. I.. I don't really have any suggestions for you in regards to-- to what you can do with your talents, here, but.. I'm sure security is always something we could use more of here. Considering the.. sorts of things that seem to happen.

[Antlers. That's intriguing, and the way Adrian's eyebrows go up slightly indicates his curiosity.]

Likewise, but please call me Adrian. I see no reason to insist on formality when we're all equally strangers to this ship. What sorts of things do you mean?

[ the smile warms slightly, and he dips his head in a slight nod. ]

Adrian, then. Please call me Asa. [ a pause as he collects his thoughts, twisting a few strands of hair around a finger absently. ] I guess it's.. sort of hard to believe, but.. we had demons around just a week ago. I haven't-- really been here long, but I'm sure others can tell you about other things.

[Adrian returns the smile with a small, if reserved, one of his own.]

Demons? As in the supposed denizens of Hell or are we speaking of a more mythological type? [Not that Adrian believes in either, but he's seen a few things that could certainly be interpreted that way.]

I-- guess they were the Biblical sort. I've never actually met a demon before, though, so I'm.. not certain.

Neither have I, although I've met plenty of devils. [His smile warms very slightly, but wryly.] I suspect that isn't what we're talking about here, though.

Should I expect to find this a dangerous kind of place, then?

Marketing, huh?

Indeed. It that something that interests you? Or have you just never met anyone in the field before?

I've dabbled, a time or two. I generally work more in acquisitions.

[ which is the fancy way of saying 'i steal crap', natch. ]

Interesting. And what kinds of things do you usually acquire?

[In other words, 'are you going to be useful to me in any way?']

Oh, no real specialty. Art, some historical pieces here and there... I have eclectic tastes.

[ in other words: i could be. (if i feel like it.) ]

I imagine that's a challenge in a place like this. I'm a collector myself, although I tend toward rather specific interests that make it unlikely I'll be doing much of that here.

Well, I always liked a challenge. [ he smiles, wide and sunny and meaningless. ] I'm an adaptable kind of guy.

[Ah, that's the kind of smile Adrian is more than a little familiar with. He offers one right back, less sunny and more restrained, but just as meaningless, and a little bit amused.] Maybe we should discuss your fondness for challenges in a less public setting, then. I'd like to at least pretend that I might have a modicum of privacy here.

[ A mild, monotone British voice chimes in. ]

Tranquility features several staffs available looking for assistance - agricultural maintenance within the oxygen garden, engineering, communications, and medical, to name a few.

I'm afraid I have no skill in medicine or agriculture, but perhaps I can lend my expertise in engineering. Are you a member of the crew?

Only newly. I can navigate you to the engineering deck if you would like, however. The crew member in charge of the area is Commander Resnik - a local of the ship.

That would be very helpful, thank you. I'm not used to idleness.

[He chuckles dryly.] I am also, generally, in possession of better manners than to accept help without at least introducing myself. Adrian Veidt.

Where might I locate you?

[ A polite pause that a head nod of greeting would go in ] A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Veidt. You may call me Jarvis.

My room is on level six, number 121.

The pleasure is mine, Jarvis. Please call me Adrian. You said you were newly a crew member -- what position?

I will be there shortly. [ And there may be some rustling of fabric and a door swooshing open as he moves ]

Of course, sir. Adrian, then. I mainly assist with communications but I frequently lend assistance in engineering for diagnostics and computation as well as general maintenance. I have only been on the ship for a short while.

[ Adrian appreciates the swift response. A point in this Jarvis' favor, to join the one he earned for being so helpful. ]

Then I imagine we'll be working together. Perhaps on the way, you can fill me in on what the others on the engineering 'crew' have been working on.

Of course. Recently the crew has been running diagnostics and analysis on the given systems in attempts to better understand their workings, to improve performance of the ship and speed of maintenance.

I can't say I know much about marketing, but what's your speciality when it comes to sciences?

Physics, mainly. I specialize in energy research specifically. And I've dabbled in genetics.

Clean energy, then?

Sorry, right. Bruce Banner, nuclear physics and biochemistry.

-Free- energy, although clean is certainly an extremely important criteria.

It's a pleasure to make the acquaintance of a colleague, Bruce. Am I allowed to ask what kind of work you were so unceremoniously dragged away from?

...Free energy, wow. It's not a goal often embraced by the people with enough money to see that happen.

Radiation. Gamma rays.

All the more reason why those of us with both means and desire to make a difference in world have an obligation to apply ourselves to the utmost.

Really? A great deal of my own research has focused on radioactive elements. The goal being, of course, to find a way to counteract the risks associated with radioactivity while still tapping into the energy potential. I have to admit that you've caught my interest. It's so rare to come across people with even the most basic understanding of the work I do, let alone have the capacity for intelligent conversation about it.

True, but unless your world's scientific community functions on a higher wavelength than the one I'm familiar with, the means are usually coupled with government weapons contracts, not desire to help their fellow man.

That's an interest of my own, now that you mention it. [ AHAHAHAHAHA SOB. ] I'm nothing special, really.

There are. The question on those comes with extra questions about legality, however.

Too much personal experience with bad ends to believe wholeheartedly. You should have asked me that a decade ago/

I'm a scientist, Mr. Veidt. I very rarely think in absolutes.
