I can't say I've ever spoken to a ship before, really. It's a pleasure.

And yes. Otherwise the galaxy couldn't function properly. Things would fall apart.

No, sadly; I'm sure things would operate a lot more smoothly if they were. But yes, the Republic spans a significant portion of the galaxy.

We're all sentient where I'm from, and some people find a problem with it, what with us having free will, and not the same as theirs. As if they didn't have this problem with each other. (And they react the same, by the way.)
