[The face of a young boy sitting quite casually in one of the shuttles appears on the screen. All the steady eating has brought his apparent age closer to nine or ten, even if he's really probably thirteen.]

Because they can't go very far. The ship has to be near a planet or a station for the shuttles to get us there.

when do we get to planets? why not stay there?

A lot of people still want to go home, and Tranquility is still the best chance at that. And some of the places we've gone have been just as bad, even if they seemed nice at first.

We don't know what happens when people disappear during the jumps.

Not sure what shucked is, but usually sooner or later things were trying to kill us.
