video. crisis averted look at that pretty smile.
( nuala hasn't felt the need to speak with the ship at large for quite some time - she hasn't felt the need to speak with much of the ship at all for quite some time. more than a few are likely seeing her for the first time entirely, and she is terribly finely framed: actual fairy queen, in her actual fairy gown, and for the occasion she's made some effort with her appearance. more to the point with her hair, most of it customarily hanging down her back but fine braids dotted with flowers forming a crown.
that is less to impress the ship than it is to make charles laugh. still. upon a spread out cloth and a few cushions in the garden, she gives her very most winsome of smiles. )
I require someone with a talent for the cutting of men's hair. Your services will be handsomely repaid.
( "people are nice to you because you're an actual fairy princess" is more or less what charles said.
well, good. she hopes seeing her play to it will keep him in good humor. )

[Mystique's voice hasn't changed in tone or accent, but it carries a different quality than it did four, five cycles ago. The sweet little girl who'd copied her brother's face to the network has cooled slightly; even when she's trying to be warm.]
I wish I could say I knew how, but we used to have money for that.

( nuala had stopped to see her, when she'd realized raven hadn't come out with the rest of them the jump before - she'd met charles, there, and that had. been awkward. )

How about you? Any residual kinda problems?
no subject
But I took a moment to see you were still with us, as did Charles. A mixed blessing, in this place, admittedly.
no subject
Have you heard anything about Charles' friend? [Mystique is able to sound super casual about it.] Erik?
no subject
( they haven't crossed paths in some time, but it hasn't historically gone well. )
no subject
[she thinks about phrasing.]
Falling out. He's a little, um. I don't know how you'd put it. Trying?

[You hang out with boys long enough and talking about stuff gets to be difficult.
Though, that aside.]
I haven't seen your brother on the network for a long time. I'm sorry I didn't ask about him.
no subject
My brother is at peace in death as he would never have been in life. I take from that what comfort I may.

I'm afraid I don't know of anyone, myself. [She pauses.] Does the name 'Ulacrum' mean anything to you, by any chance?
[It's a shot in the dark, but she's curious if anyone else from "home" is here.]
no subject
It doesn't - ought it?
no subject
[Now that she's looking a bit longer at Nuala, she can see brushes of color that Ulacrum elves wouldn't have.]
no subject
no subject
The Ulacrum are elves, and elves are very common. We learn the basic Elvish tongue as soon as primary school. [Imperium is at least very good about that. Apparently in America, not every State does the same thing.] But I suppose everyone here comes from a very different world.

They don't remember you at all? That's... terrible rude of them.

( it's a lot of things. it's very complicated. rightly, nuala should acknowledge that - should permit that it is more complex than 'forgetting', that there is more at play, that her own people have been in some ways complicit in their own destruction...
...but it's a lot of hard work, being entirely fair when it's something that hurts so personally, so acutely, and for so long. why does she always have to be fair? why can't she throw a tantrum and raise an army? because someone has to know better. and she does. it's just not very satisfying, knowing better. )
no subject
[She waves her free hand idly, with the weariness of someone who's seen far too much in too small a time.]
I doubt it. Still, some people on this ship should know better, if nothing else.
[They did seem to be from everywhere.]
no subject
( it's unfortunately a short list, but fortescue is officially on it, maybe with some little hearts. )

[Correctness is important.]
no subject
( 'we call ourselves', general. 'my kingdom' - distinctly possessive. )

Why won't her name leave her alone? Oh, right. Because she's tethered to it.]
...I see. To the elves of my world, the Fae are an old story. Not a kind one, either. But in this case, I think that's just... a similar word, for a different thing. [She quirks a wry smile.] The Fae of those stories wouldn't talk to a mortal. They're more inclined to rip the souls out of things.
no subject
No, ( very gently, ) no, I suspect they know well of what they speak.
( it's the way she says it, so delicately, that may most unsettle. but what fortescue says is nothing so very unfamiliar or strange - nothing she feels compelled to correct. she might not desire the war that brought both peoples to the brink of annihilation - might not wish the blood of genocide on her own slim hands - but she's hardly going to tell this woman that her people aren't capable.
when nuada strode into the light of new york city, it was to remind the people of that city why they had once feared the dark. the fae are as dangerous as they are beautiful; nuala, with her soft hands and her kind eyes, is all the moreso for her genuine kindness. when she believes herself to be right, there is nothing she won't do, and she isn't in the habit of self-doubt. )
no subject
She chuckles.]
Well. Then... thank you for not... [What did the stories say...] Sucking out my soul. Or making me go mad just by looking at me through this device.
[Fortescue gives a little wink. She can joke through pretty much anything. It's a talent.]

Is it permissible for me to join you, Nuala? We have not sewn together in some time, and I would so very much like to sit and speak with you as we once did.

( true to her word, she shows up at the spot nuala has taken for herself with her own supplies in tow, along with her mother's gown. elizabeth is dressed beautifully today, with her hair tied back in gold-hued ribbons. her cheeks are rosy, and there is a small smile on her face.
one might never guess that she is still dealing with her granddaughter and not-father's departures. )
Good day, dearest friend. ( she drops a curtsy as best she might, and then takes a seat next to her upon the cushions. ) How have you fared of late?
no subject
it isn't resolved, really. but it's better than it was, and she is so glad. )
no subject
( her cheeks blaze with heat, turning bright pink. yes, she and cesare have been quite busy, confined to their chamber these days. elizabeth clears her throat, then, and releases nuala's hands. )
How do you fare?
no subject
Perhaps not quite so well as you, ( amused. )
no subject
Oh, forgive me! ( a beat, as she shakes her head and meets her friend's gaze directly. ) But yes, he has kept me very happy indeed. Moreso of late than usual, I will own.
( the look in her eyes becomes entirely mischievous. ) Is he not beautiful? I think so. In any rate.. ( she clears her throat and releases nuala's hands after squeezing them once more. )
What are you fashioning this day?
video
I wouldn't call it a talent but I've done it before. And it looked decent enough.
video
A dear friend of mine is in dire need of being put to rights.

I could try to cut it. I don't have scissors or anything though.
