[The video that appears is not of Ianto at first, but of this thing.]

We've found a piece of equipment in the medbay that might -- might -- be able to extract the nanites if we can get it working.

[The communicator swings around to show Ianto looking grim.]

If anyone still capable of moving without growing new limbs knows how to repair this thing, we need you down here yesterday.

[ An only slightly crooked video feed shows up in frank reply -- the image is of the same machine, partially covered with clear white plastic that has been folded back like a messy bed. The circular tunnel through which someone should lay down is shadowed dark, and it has a feeling of machinery that's been condemned.

This corner of the laboratory is dim, control panels and other metal things similarly covered over. Storage and abandonment in equal parts. ]

Is yours operational?

[ The voice attached to comms device number correlates for those that know either; for the unitiated, a primly tidy English accent, male, echoey for virtue of the space, and rough from a probable lack of sleep.

He keeps the comms device pointed away from him and instead on the twin sister of the medical bay's device, approaching the machine at a wander. ]

Not remotely. It won't even turn on. Yours?

No. Well--

[ Loud plastic crinkles, a hand going out to yank down more plastic. His movements are slow, lethargic, and the skin on his hand has a strange quality to it, at once both ruddy and pale beyond the white sleeve of his lab coat and-- gone again, drawn again out of frame.

What plastic reveals is significant damage to the machine, whole covering panels missing and its innards half-gutted. ]

As you can see. I've someone who'll be able to tell if its in any way salvageable. How do you know what it is?

[ After this message, he sends an alert to Raven Reyes -- a brisk description of location, and a link to this particular communication. ]

[Ianto swears under his breath, far more concerned by the damage to the machine than the obvious damage to Charles. One can undo the other, after all. Theoretically.]

I used to work with alien technology back home. Nanotech was really quite popular. All kinds of things you can do with it.

[ alert's been received, so here's raven showing her face. she doesn't look quite as bad-off as charles, but she sure as hell did before she got word that there's work to do. right now, she's running on sheer determination the way you often hear people making it through harsh survival situations on adrenaline alone. that doesn't erase the sheen of sweat across her forehead and down her face, or the dark circles under her eyes, or the translucency creeping up over the skin of her cheeks getting much worse farther along down her neck. ]

I'm on my way. [ which'll go a hell of a lot faster once jasper gets back, but he's on his way - sending him a heads-up was the first thing she did once she got the alert. ] I'd like to say I can pull 'em both both back together, but realistically, we should get ready to scrap Charles's for parts.

[ He keeps the video still pointed away and on the probable extractions device, helpfully circling the machine as he waits. The control panel is scanned over for both Raven and Ianto to see, then draws back. ]

Prrrobably so. We should assume we'll only have one to work with, and treat the coming jump as a deadline.

[ The video jerks, swings blurry, settles again. Differently angled. Sitting down is a good idea. ]

How long have we got? [ and before they have time to file it under 'idiotic questions', she tacks on: ] I showed up on the last one. [ she knows when they came out of the pods, but not when they're gonna have to get back into them. ]

Days.

[ And that's it from Xavier, for the moment. He clicks off his feed, and he will wait for Raven and Jasper to get here before he shifts off to rest, bone-deep exhaustion apparently deciding to settle in now that there's a clear solution to work on. One he can't. ]

We'll have to make it work, one way or another. I don't know if any of us can survive a jump like this.

[Ianto chimes back in, still looking over the innards of the machine in the medbay.]

You're right, though. We'll get one working machine out of this, no more. How are you holding up?

I'll send some of mine.

[ whether they'll be able to fix it is another story. but she has kept two or three able-bodied volunteers with her; anyone else she has long scolded to get to medbay. ]

Any idea if it can extract nanites from things that aren't people?

I have no idea. Right now we're going for the lofty goal of getting it to turn on. Why?

We've found the source of the stasis fluid, and it looks like it might've been tampered with. I'd be surprised if there weren't more of the wrong nanites in at least some of it. We're trying to get the system to tell us what the deal is right now.

...Ward. We never did catch the bastard, and he'd have access.

Assuming we all survive this, what do you really think of helping me capture a manticore?

I think that if the only other way to get a manticore sample is to wait until we're being hunted I would rather do the hunting
