[Now that she knows it's safe to show her face on the network, that's precisely what she does. Her hair is swept back, well out of her face. There are plants on the table before her, divided into neat bundles. Below each bundle, there is a small piece of paper, signifying their possible properties.]

How could anything be simple in outer space? It's laughable to think even the smallest of comforts would be familiar. Yet that doesn't mean we're defeated.

[She touches a journal - copious notes have already been written in it.]

We have to adjust our expectations. [Picking up one plant in particular, she sniffs it.] The results might be surprising.

[There is an extra scent of something to the plant in her hand. She pauses before giving the scent a name.]

Why let the boundaries of our worlds hold us prisoner? I've been to another world once before. That was an adjustment too.

[Her voice trails off, remembering her first steps in the Wizarding World.]

We can adjust. It's...what we have to do.

[As much as she shoots for optimism, her tone falls short. This isn't a change she wants to make. Yet it's upon her all the same.]

I told you before that my name was Penelope Clearwater. That was a lie. I'm Hermione Granger.

Would you believe me if I said things in space could be worse than what's going on with this ship? [ He knows from experience. He's not trying to make light of the situation, but rather say that it's not impossible to survive all of this. ]

What sort of other world have you been to, Hermione?

How so? [She's curious. It's not in her nature to jump to conclusions. All she knows is what she can see for herself.] I was born in the "non-Magical world". It's called the "Muggle world" by those who possess Magic. While it is technically on the same planet as the "Magical world", it operates under different laws and parameters.

My parents still live there, but I've, more or less, made the transition since I'm a Witch.

[ He listens quietly, nodding once to suggest that he understands. It's not the strangest thing he's heard, after all. ]

Sounds like you've got an opportunity most people don't get. There's something to be said for being able to function in two worlds. And to answer your question, short of accidents? You can survive most anything in space if you play it smart.

[ He paused. ]

There's a guy I know, led an army- a whole federation of refugees from planets that had been totally wrecked. For a good while, it looked like the galaxy was sunk, doomed to fall to an army from another universe, and it just took this one guy to change all that. With a little help from friends.

This ship isn't an army, and all of us who are stuck here could do a lot if we help each other out.

It's not all bad, you know. Space travel. ( honestly, he has no idea what the girl is really talking about — the specifics, the thing with the plants, he feels like he's stepping into a conversation and missing half. so he goes for reassurance, in the one area he can give it. )

[sophically]

If the circumstances back home were better, I would agree. [But knowing everything is so bad and there's nothing she can do about it...] Do you have much experience traveling through space?

It's sort of a hobby. ( with a slight air of self depreciation. there's a beat and he adds to clarify: ) I have a friend with a spaceship.

[ the books, however... ] Have you been studying?

[She gives him a brief smile that quickly turns shy.]

I don't do much else. Studying comes naturally to me.

[ He's not saying she was wrong. But he's curious as to the why. ]

Hello, Robin. [How does she explain without saying too much?] I'm being sought by some dangerous people in my world. If any of them had been on-board the ship, I thought it better to enter under a pseudonym.

They're for potions. [She can probably expand on that.] Potions have many uses in my world. They can be used medicinally or as poisons. It all depends on what ingredients are used and in what order.

[ Slowly nodding. ] So you're planning on making them- should I even ask what kind? [ Not that he'd think you'd say if you were going for the poison kind. ]

I wanted to apologize. For that message I sent you. [ pause, then-- ] You didn't go out int he halls, did you?

[sophically]

No, please don't apologize! I...did. But I likely would have anyway. [She hates that she couldn't help him.] What happened?

[ it doesn't help, but she's safe. that at least eases some of the guilt over the whole thing. ]

I don't know. I don't remember.

[ pause, then-- ]

I don't even remember the message I sent to you. It's all a blank.

I only speak what I believe. [Her cheeks burn at the compliments. It has been a long time since she has gained approval in any form. Back home, it feels like she is trying to climb a mountain without any progress.]

Under what circumstances did you visit another world?

You speak very bravely, Mademoiselle. It is a difficult place, but behind the canvass of difficulty sometimes lurks the great goodness.

I don't know about that; I can only say what I believe. We are not completely without resources, so we shouldn't be completely without hope either.

[Most of what she is saying is for her benefit too.]
