Two questions:
What are the expectations here?
What positions are available for those who can work?
[ an exit is what tobias really wants but a perfunctory search could have told him escape is impossible — and he scoured every relevant link, every post about the ship's life he could find.
he'll settle for knowing where the needs of the ship lie. ]

That would depend on your skillset.

I can't imagine I'm the only one wondering so let's go with a general pitch. I'll let you know when something jumps out at me.

So let's see, the ship's departments are divided into Operations, Security and Science. Inside those departments, we have Communications, Engineering, Gunnery and Flight Crew, Medical, Agriculture and Research departments. Security, as I mentioned, and additional support staff who work where they're needed.
Obviously joining a department is preferred, but there are ways to help that don't involve signing up. People need to be fed who don't know how to cook, and keeping people entertained had been a problem before. We once had a whole lot of kids onboard, and they needed a teacher. Some people fix clothes. They're all niches that need to be filled.
Let me know where, and I'll go into more detail.

Duties: Maintaining the present complement of thirteen working shuttles, repairing further shuttles using the available resources. Volunteers with piloting experience preferred but not necessary, as present crew offers lessons. Undermanned sufficient to present demand.

There are departments. What kind of work are you suited for?

[ he's welcome to his sarcasm; she's going to reply with complete dryness. ]

1) Don't panic.
2) Settle in for the long haul.
3) Don't panic.
Those first and last points were stressed often.

I was told I should speak with Carolyn Fry about flight crew. Is that you?

I'll give these a look, thanks.
I read that the shuttle bay is the only place here with windows. Those there for anyone?
