[ Nathan wears his black bomber jacket and jeans, a rare occurrence for a video post. His hair is slicked back, he's made no effort to shave, and...is that a sword tied across his back. Yes, yes it is. He looks downright rakish, more ne'er-do-well than politician. ]

Let me bring all of you up to speed. If you haven't been watching the network in any detail recently, you won't be aware of the fact that our deceased friend and victim Felix Laurens took to the airwaves to speak to us, ostensibly because he had the information we needed.

Laurens, for those of you who weren't here at the time, commanded the Scylla and her crew, a ship of raiders - pirates - that attempted to strip the Tranquility more than a year ago, and caused most of the damage on our two hundred and fifty passenger floors, destroying at least one of them when the Scylla was ripped from our hull during the Jump.

Laurens was certainly helpful; he told us that the place we're approaching is called Arima, a no-good dive for pirates and villains of all kinds, who'd kill you so much as look at you. Whoever took that shuttle fled there, probably to try and find a way off the Tranquility for good, and if they can do it, there's absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be able to do it too.

Now I'm not saying it won't be risky. Hell, the universe out there might be more than we can deal with, but in two and a half years we haven't found a way to make this ship send us home. This might be the only way for us to break the cycle once and for all, and with it leave behind all its mysteries and its brainwashing, and the threat of death, disease or madness that hangs over us every day. At the very least, we need to find out who stole that shuttle, and why they thought it was time to abandon ship.

With Carolyn's permission, I'd like to volunteer to fly the first shuttle down there. Anyone who feels like they could offer assistance securing the landing platform, you'll get priority seating, and I'll attempt to use my experience to establish radio contact with the ship, let everyone know whether or not it's safe. For the rest of you, there's time to think about if you're ready to try and leave, and while we don't have many pilots left, there should be just enough to get us all down there. Even so, Laurens has made it clear that we shouldn't waste too much time thinking. We have days--four at most.

You all have an hour to make your decisions and pack. Do not wear your ship issue jumpsuits, and keep your tattoos concealed at all times. Come armed, and look tough. There's a chance this may be a one way trip, so anything that's precious to you should come along now; there's no knowing whether we'll have the opportunity to come back and get it.

If someone tries to bring a horse on the shuttle, remind them that they don't travel well in confined spaces, and you can't risk injury to fellow passengers.

That and there's not going to be anything for it to eat when we get there; it's a space colony not a dude ranch.

Do me a favor and don't tell people to bring whatever they want on the shuttles ever again.

[ A pause. ] I'll save my goodbyes for when I get down to the shuttlebay. I've been packed for two days, so if you think I won't get in the way, would you mind me coming down and overseeing things from there?

You can oversee the shuttle you're flying and your passengers. Not the rest.

[ Lip quirk. ]

Yes. [ Oh, and by the way- ] Nice sword.

I thought it was a nice touch. I can use it, too. [ An incorrigible tease, and a flirt even in the face of danger. ] You think I should wear an eyepatch too? It seemed like it might be over the top.

[ it takes elena a while to come to a decision -- she's sec, so she feels a responsibility to help with things like this when she can, and she is curious, but at the same time... she promised jenna and ric she wouldn't do anything stupid. going into a place full of pirates and villains seems pretty stupid.

but jenna and ric aren't here anymore, and there's no one to stop here from doing something stupid.. ]

I'll go with you, Nathan.

[ He should tell her not to come, that she has people here who loves her and she should probably speak to them before she makes what might be a one way trip. And there's other complications--the last time he lead her into danger, for example. This would be...pretty much the same thing. They were flying into literal peril, and there was a distinct possibility he might not even safely navigate his way through the asteroids, let alone be able to bring them all back.

But she's stepped up like that, the first to show support, and he can't just turn her down despite his hangups, insist she stays behind until they secure the area. He'll at least talk to her about it first; that would be the fair thing to do. ]

It might not be as easy as last time.

Nothing here is ever easy.

[ elena still has nightmares about the bridge, sometimes -- in amongst the nightmares of drowning and burning and being drained of blood, her loved ones dying and, more recently, being an augustine torture victim. she knows how bad things can get on this ship, and she knows that they could be just as bad out there. but she can't quite bring herself to care, not with everything she's lost. damon doesn't remember anything, jenna and ric are gone, klaus is here, stefan's the ripper... it's hard to muster up the energy to care about leaving caroline and bonnie behind when she knows that another version of her will eventually come take her place.

she doesn't want this excursion to end badly. it just wouldn't bother her too much if it did. ]

Meet you by the shuttle bay?

I'll be there in...under ten minutes. [ Deep breath. ] We're really doing this.

Well there is that. But still.

[ He sighs, pressing his hand back through his hair. ]

Jenna and Caroline would kill me if something happened to you. But you know, I played the dissuading you from going headfirst into danger last time. Sooner or later everyone, me included, has just gotta step back and let you make the decisions yourself.

But if you come, I owe it to Jenna to look after you. You won't leave my side, alright?

Jenna's not here.

[ which is part of why elena wants to go in the first place, and she knows nathan must know that. if she sounds as depressed as she feels, he'll probably accuse her of being suicidal, just like damon and stefan used to, and refuse to allow her to come. she sighs and runs a hand over her face, nodding even though nathan can't see it. ]

Yeah, I'll stick with you. Anyway, as long as we get to Arima I'll be fine, you know that. If anyone's going to be protecting someone here it'll be me protecting you.

If you can fly there, you can fly back.

It's hard to come back if your pilot decides he's not stepping foot back on this deathtrap. Our track record with stops isn't great, but if they think it's time to disembark, I'm all for thinking it might not be a bad idea.

I promise I remember how to fly a shuttle. Just don't get to do it nearly often enough, that's all.

My apologies, I've been suspecting something like this for a couple days now, so you could say I'm jumping the gun.

And you know what, there's more than a few kinds of spacemen around here, I'm not sure which ones we're supposed to do as when we've got too many to choose from.

To be fair about it, it's more than the shuttles I'm catching up on. But I've been here a couple weeks and death, disease and brainwashing only just came up. So far no one's even been able to tell me where I talk to the guys who run the place.
