So I've got a dilemma. One that I'm hoping that someone on the ship can help me with.
[Cue the flash of a charming, Harkness grin. C'mon, whoever you are, you know you wanna.]
I need something made for me. For a friend. And while I'm good at a lot of things - a lot of things [yes, Jack, please spare us the innuendo] - metalworking really isn't one of them. Give me an Arcateenian psychic melder or a W'narian battle cruiser any day, but metal arts - arts in general really - are a bit beyond me. Especially on as small a scale as I'm looking for.
Anyway, I've heard there are a few on board with the sort of skill that might be able to help me. I know that payment doesn't really work in any normal sort of way in this place, but I'm sure we'll be able to work something out.
[Way to be kind of cryptic, Jack. Hopefully it gets enough of the point across though.]

[Jack Harkness, awkward at relationships? Never...]

Does the type of metal matter?
no subject
We could meet up, if you want. I've got a measurement for the size, at least. [Which he may or may not have taken while Ianto was sleeping.
Because that's not creepy at all or anything, Jack.]no subject
[And in the time it will take Jack to get down there, Harry can tidy up his slightly disastrous magical experimentation area. There are warning signs.]

[Jack may or may not be chomping at the bit here to get this done
before he loses his courage.]no subject
[And in due course, Harry will have tidied up his corner of the shuttle bay and set out a few different hunks of metal. He doesn't have gold or silver, but he can put a non-reactive sheen on just about anything.]

Jack makes his way down to the shuttle bay, a more familiar scene now that he's switched jobs to straddle the Engineering and Flight Crew both. He flashes the other a charming smile as he approaches.]
Hey. [Out of habit - military habit, no doubt - he reaches out a hand to shake Harry's in greeting.] Thanks for doing this.
no subject
It's no trouble, really. I've been learning how to bend metal into gaskets and bolts for the shuttles. A ring ought to be easy in comparison. Do you have a design you want or just a plain band?
my apologies for the wait on this >>
A plain band should do nicely. Nothing too fancy, he wouldn't care for a design I don't think. As long as it's shiny, and, well. Obvious. [He grins, slightly sheepishly.
/weeps forever. (no, I'm okay.)
Like this?
[It's a plain, unmarked band.]
Or would you rather this?
[Also, fairly plain but with a bit of faceting around the edge.]
TT
[He reaches in his hand and pulls out a piece of paper that he used to get Ianto's exact measurements.] This should be the right size.
;O;!!!
[It really isn't an issue. Harry's been experimenting with what he can do and if he's able to make a self-sealing stembolt, a ring won't be a problem.]
If you want, I can put a charm on it? So you can always find it or record a message?
no subject
What... What could you do for protection for the wearer?
no subject
[Harry tilts his head to one side and runs through all the charms he can think of and dearly wishes he'd had a chance to actually talk magic with Lily.]
I could do a sort of call and response? If I made two. Or a ring and something else.

[He's certain he can set it up to do that for non-wizards.]
And, if you want, I can leave the charm open enough so that if you've got a wizard handy, you can use it like a game of hot and cold. Like a compass. Just in case the hallways decide to lead us on a merry chase.

When you say a magical charge, are we talking something that needs to be re-upped, like a battery? Or will it be self-sustaining? [Because that will be useful. Especially if, you know. He happens to lose his resident wizard, or it fades out at the most inopportune moment.]
no subject
[ Harry is already mentally sketching out ideas. He makes a gesture like he unrolling a map and a shimmering translucent plane appears to hover in air and then he's able to 'write' on it, jotting down notes and ideas. It's a portable, wizarding whiteboard. Of sorts. ]
no subject
Self-sustaining would be good. I'd hate to have it run out at the worst of times due to some sort of hangup that we haven't thought through here. [Jack wisely doesn't say that maybe they don't make comparisons with it in terms of his lifespan as they don't know how long that will be. It's one thing to think it. It's another thing to say it. He may be immortal but he does know how to be sensitive about these things.
He watches as Harry brings out his magical whiteboard and writes on it in the air. He's seen technology that does almost the same sort of thing, but it's another thing to see the ability conjured out of thin air, as it were. He wonders what life would be like if he were born with the same sort of powers and abruptly quits wondering. Life, he can imagine, would have been equally as difficult, just in different ways.]
no subject
[ He has no idea how long it could take him to devise a charm that will continue on and he doesn't want to leave them without a ring for some indefinite period. ]
no subject
[Jack nods. He can question Harry about the charm later - maybe even get him to tie it into his lifeforce somehow. It would be kind of risky, and difficult to explain without explaining to Harry the whole fixed point business, but he'll manage somehow. For now he'll let the young man keep tinkering away.]
Anything else you need from me?

video;
Aren't you friendly? Though I figure this "friend" of yours is luckier than most.
video;
Luckier than most? What makes you say that?
[Oh, the smile that he is giving you right now.]
video;
"Friend" is usually code, from experience. They probably know on a very intimate level how good you are at things. Am I getting warm?
video;
I'd say you're pretty hot. [Annnnnnd a little wink for effect on that double entendre. Because seriously, you walked right into that one. He doesn't want to scare him off, though, so he backs down, shaking his head.]
Good guess. Although the whole wanting to acquire him a ring thing was probably a pretty big hint.
[Oops that just slipped right out there.]
video;
Wow, you're good at this. [ His grin grows at Jack's little wink. What can Jason say? He works hard so he can play even harder. ]
So how long have you kids been here if you're planning on popping the big one?
video;
At the question he raises his wrist, flashing the number nano-tattooed there. 001-003.] It's been about thirty jumps now. Not that I've been counting, or anything.
Anyway, the big one's already been popped. The ring is more of an afterthought. A tradition. [He shrugs.] What can I say, I'm an old-fashioned romantic. And at least this way, there's no danger of a "no" in response. [he can't help adding, with a cheeky grin]
video;
By the sound of things, wedding fever's in the air. But I guess anything to keep from going crazy, right? [ He shrugs. ]
Congrats.
video; wow my apologies for this being so late* >>
It's Jack, by the way. Captain Jack Harkness. [A grin spreads itself across his face.] Figure I should at least know the name of the guy I'm speaking to, yeah? There are less of us aboard here than you might think.
*((ooc: my apologies for the lateness here! the end of the month plot totally got away with me last month, and things are just now settling down. i'd totally understand if you'd rather not continue this bc of the timing, but if that's the case, would you like to do something more recent to make up for my error?))
no subject
So "Captain." Military?
( ooc; Not a problem. I'm good with backtagging and we can always handwave things if you need to. )
no subject
Royal Air Force. [Because the American accent really sounds like he should have been fighting in the Queen's forces, right? He lets that sink in for a moment, before he continues to say:] Volunteer.
((ooc: i am a master back-tagger, so if you are alright with that then i am happy to continue here <3 i hope to not leave that much time in between tags from now on, i apologize again, i got lost writing an app for a character with no wiki to help write the history and suddenly it was a week and a half later when i finally emerged from it sob))
