[Text isn't usually her bag, but as she's currently lying in a dark room nursing a headache and trying not to puke her guts out-- needs must.]

GENERAL PRIORITY:
I need at least three people willing to run communications and record data for a recon mission in the ship. Technical experience preferred but not required. You won't be in the field, meaning there's little to no danger of missing the jump. See this archived post for additional details.

Any additional volunteers with technical skill willing to work with me
[see: anyone she delegates the job to] to find workarounds for the ship's comm dead zones would be appreciated. If you can crack the problem, I'll personally barter my spare change of clothes away for something you want.

Unrelated side note:
Incident report re: medbay pre-jump would be great.

[locked to anyone currently signed up for recon mission]
Requesting a status report from all team leaders and anyone running environmental tests on their equipment. [...or magical abilities...]

To be honest, you may need a sorceror to communicate through those dead zones.

Running tests first?

Good. I don't know if it's feasible, however. We've tried to track individual communicators in the past, with a visual map, but we've only been successful to some extent. Has Nathan Petrelli showed you the results?

[OOC: MY BAD. I'm over in her last post about this expedition and was going from Snape's thread about communications, and was careless about the privacy level. Well, let's pretend L said "magic" instead of "a sorceror," I guess. :\ SORRY, GUYS. I try very hard not to infomod; this was a slipup.]

I've attached a map of a typical afternoon.

It's not just that people tend to cluster in these areas, it's that we can't get coverage in all of the others: there wouldn't be a dot even if someone was there with their device. It doesn't help that there's a rotation, losing and gaining some devices at every jump, but the difference that makes is minimal -- people tend to use their devices. Given that someone is almost always exploring or lost, you'd expect to see a few more isolated dots here if we had full coverage.

As it is, while this was taken some time ago (NP knows exactly when), it reflects a lot of people in passenger quarters and the oxygen garden. We know the coverage is usually good there.

[OOC: It's all good! Snape's player contacted me independently, gave me blanket permission to have L read Snape's private stuff, and suggested that L could probably have picked up the idea from Harry's more open thread anyway. Whew! Still, sorry for the mixup. :) ]

I don't exactly know the answer to that question but I'm going to try anyway! :D

Tried is the operative word. I suppose we'll continue to try again when there are significantly more than three of us. The changing layout doesn't help. Neither does the danger of going out in small groups.

Petrelli can give you more updates on that. As far as I'm aware, most of what can be done has been done... but the situation here is always changing.

[Although, as far as L is concerned, it's barely anyone else's business: this ship has about ten aspiring captains too many, any of whom may be gone at a moment's notice, none of whom has won his loyalty yet. His lot is thrown in with Nathan and they've developed a camaraderie, he has some grudging respect for Tyke, and he's noticed that Organa is content to take a background role -- a hard worker, a genuine public servant. Others? That's up in the air.

The concern with triangulation should be finding people who are lost, mostly as a search-and-rescue matter, but on occasions when they didn't get themselves lost of their own accord, the network is rarely helpful... specifically unhelpful, in fact, in a way that seems pointed. He's gone missing in that way himself, more than once.

If they've picked up anything that was suspected of being Ward or Resnik, he doesn't know about it. That means either they know exactly where the dead zones are and have made sure to leave their devices in a place that mimics a complete disappearance, or they aren't exactly here anymore, or both, or something he hasn't considered yet. It's hard to say.]

What I can do is help with the matter at hand. Maybe. I'm not a wizard in the literal sense.

[ time for the most understated message ever. ]

I tested what we discussed. It is still possible, with the right subject, however it is not viable for me to do without suffering extreme exhaustion.

[ somebody teach this man where the power button on a goddamn computer is ]

My 'equipment' is functioning as well as can be expected given the fact that the ship's interference isn't localized to tech. I can't say for certain how magic - mine or anyone else's - will function in between here and one of the dead zones without actually having someone in said dead zone.

[ And because he's reading-- ] Actually being a wizard in the literal sense, I can try enchanting objects to permit communication between people who aren't magic users, but the standard unforeseen functionality problem disclaimers will, of course, apply.

Someone suggested I volunteer around here and make myself useful, so here I am.

I'm Darcy Lewis. New. I've got some experience with complex computer systems and hacking. Spoilers: I'm not sure how well they translate to a ship in space. But I'm willing to give it a shot if you are.

Learning curve doesn't seem too steep in comparison to systems I've dealt with on Earth. I'm sure with a little help it won't take me long to get up to speed.

It sure as hell beats sitting around.

It's going to take some training before we're combat ready.

[ we, as in "this team". brad himself is combat ready, but the team doesn't function as a team yet. that includes him. ]

Hand-mirrors are traditional but I'd think something more durable would be better. I'm open to suggestions, as I have no inkling as to what a soldier might carry.
