[Video] It's High Time Someone Did This

[Bail is standing in one of the kitchens. At the moment, the room is pristine. Those he is particularly thinking of may be unfamiliar with it in that state.]

I realize that many here are used to very different technology than we have on board. We already have quite extensive training videos for many aspects of life in space. But I'd like to add to that.

Some of you are unfamiliar with how to use the ship's kitchen facilities. If you'd like to join me in the kitchen on deck 17, I'd be happy to instruct you.

If you don't want a full lesson, but have a specific question, I can do that over the comm.

I DO require extensive lessons in coming to grips with the microwave and its existence in my life now, if you would not mind. And perhaps some other basic methods too? A friend and I were eager to make bread once...

Bread is quite the undertaking. But we can work up to it.

The microwave is quite a bit simpler. You're used to a much lower technology level, then?

Oh indeed. It was 1832 at home, when all of us arrived here. And I...had not spent much time in the kitchen at all, I am sorry to say. Things have been...interesting here. Starting with keeping them from exploding would be good, I think.

There are two things you need to remember with a microwave. The first is that nothing metal should be used. The second is to always allow steam to escape your vessel. I suspect that may be the cause of your explosion problem.

Ah yes, those HAVE both been a concern.

I was told that plastic is...expansive but I did not realize it was not SO expansive. I may have blown up a bottle of water on an occasion, I am afraid.

The greater trouble there is that the water begins to boil and it creates pressure inside the bottle. Sooner or later, it must release.

Yees. That was rather a shock when it all decided it was going to bubble over. And then to melt along with the explosion. Things were...interesting in the kitchens for a while there. And not to mention the silver rimmed teacups.

A ceramic mug is usually your best option for reheating tea.

[Oh yes. All the metalic things have found their way into microwaves with him around.]

Yeees. It was particularly awkward before I learnt that.

I would imagine so.

Some plastic is safe to microwave, but if you're at all uncertain it's best to just avoid it entirely.

I've somewhat avoided the microwave all together, rather. It felt, well, like a much safer plan.

That's one option. The microwave is merely a convenience, not a necessity.

And it does seem to be, well, out to get me as it were.

...Does that sound paranoid? Much of the time, I suspect that the entire SHIP has it in for me.

It does give that impression.

It IS strange. I would think after a time that it would go away, yet...still, I have that feeling. Paranoid as that no doubt SOUNDS.

Oh certainly not. Were you in engineering recently or around any of THOSE events? That alone indicates a wrong.

I wasn't there myself. But I have a few new grey hairs from Luke going in there.

Ah, I do know what you mean. My friends were struck by it pretty violently after.

Worrying for them felt worse than anything else, somehow.

It does seem that way, sometimes. My world seems particularly populated with people who tend to dash into danger.

Ah, there is a feeling I know entirely too well. That sounds like a description for most of my closest friends.

I suppose it's my own fault for spending so much time around Jedi. Though some of them are family so that can't be helped.

Jedi? I have not yet met anyone who is a Jedi, I do not believe. Revolutionary insurgents, in my case.

Much as I dislike the need for such activities, it is still good to hear that there are those willing to stand for such, in any world.

I'm a man of piece, but I see no other path to restoring the Republic. And we must restore it.

Republics often seem the best way of ensuring peace, I think. Sometimes we ARE forced to step outside the bounds of what would usually come in order to see it done. When the stakes are high enough, even the man of peace must stand to fight, when every other option has been torn away, yes.

The alternative would be allowing the Empire to continue unchecked. And that is no alternative at all.

An Empire, yet? No, those are rarely good, much as they might appear at first. Trading security for freedom is never a means to anything good.

People have started to realize it wasn't quite as ideal an arrangement as they initially thought.

Ah, yes. It usually seems to be that case, until people come to that realization.

I imagine it was simpler to build the same facility over and over again rather than redesigning.

Hello. Have you ever cooked before, or are we starting from the beginning?

[Honestly, the latter is almost easier. People who have never cooked at all don't assume they know what they're doing.]

[She's done a bit, but not well so she shakes her head.]

Best to begin with something simple then. Pasta is a popular beginner dish.

[Using prepared pasta. Obviously.]

[She nods at that.]

[He goes to the cupboard and selects a large pot]

The first step is to boil water.

[Chell will follow his steps, always staying just a little out of reach because Aperture paranoia will do that to you.

Okay, one pot.]

[He just assumes it's cultural as he fills the pot and places it on the stove]

You want to salt the water, it really improves the flavour.

[She nods. Salt water sounds like it would taste bad but hey, that's what she's learning about isn't it.]

[He's grown used to her muteness, so he watches her face for any confusion as he continues]

You can put the pasta in now, but you get better texture by waiting for the water to boil first. A lot of cooking is about patience.

[Yes, explanations. You are a good teacher Bail. She nods with a bit of a smile. She has a lot of patience.]
