one ☽ video
[The face of a man appears on the video feed, caught somewhere between serious and plainly stoic. It's obvious he's given thought to his words before he even turned his device on, as he begins to speak almost immediately, each sentence quite deliberate in its delivery.]
Good evening, residents of the Tranquility. My name is Yuri Petrov, and I am a new "arrival" to this vessel. [You may or may not hear the airquotes. This seems to be the only time his irritation towards this whole situation spikes, as he simply continues undeterred.] I served as a judge in the city of Sternbild, and though some of you may be familiar with the name, I suspect most of you are not. If you do happen to fall within the former category, I would appreciate it if you contacted me as soon as possible.
[With that out of the way, he takes a breath and continues.]
Regardless, I have taken a couple of days to orient myself to my new surroundings, and I feel as if becoming more useful to those around me is an obligation on my part. As such, I would appreciate it if those listening to this broadcast would point me in the direction in which my skills would be the most helpful to others. I am highly organized and a critical thinker, with a background in law -- though I understand that the latter may be nothing more than a lost art here. Yet in terms of more mundane tasks, I have an inordinate amount of experience dealing with both people and paperwork on a professional level.
Any suggestions would be appreciated; and any requests for clarification will be attended to as soon as I am able.
((ooc; a note to anyone who ran across Yuri in the jump log, before he reached his lockers: his scar is no longer visible in this video post! just fyi))

[voice]
The law is not a lost art, Your Honor. For what it is worth.
My name is Miles Edgeworth; I currently serve on Security, though at home I was a prosecutor.
[voice]
He hadn't expected someone to call him "Your Honor" again, out here in the dark reaches of space. It's a welcome familiarity when everything else surrounding him remains alien.
So, a prosecutor. He's seen many of those in his time -- again, familiarity.]
I hadn't expected an adamant defense of the universality of law here, but I'm glad to be mistaken. Though I had meant in a more tangible sense; unless you are going to tell me that there's a form of working government here, as well, Mr. Edgeworth.
[voice]
Not as such, sir. We do have a sort of common-law system, however, based off general moral principles; stealing, for example, is against the general code, as is assault, murder, and the like.
[voice]
That's comforting to hear, or at least the most comforting thing I've heard since my arrival. However, are there many instances of serious transgressions here? Murder is always disquieting.
[voice]
There have been relatively few, sir, but they have occurred.
[voice]
And was there punishment for those who committed the crimes?
[voice]
There have been two incidents in which someone was charged with murder. In one instance, the charges were dropped; in the other, the suspect disappeared from the ship before any punishment could be enacted.
[voice]
[It's not... the most satisfactory answer, not to Yuri, and you can hear it in his tone. His response, however, is cordial enough:] I suppose as long as there isn't a complete dearth of justice on this ship, it is as much as I can hope for.
[voice]
[Edgeworth is grateful for the lack of follow-up questions regarding the cases he mentioned. He...doesn't really care to explain all of that so early in his acquaintanceship with Petrov.]
Security does keep order adequately well. The force is not without flaw, but considering the challenges we face, we are acceptable.
[voice]
That there's even a group of people willing to enforce a modicum of order is commendable, Mr. Edgeworth. I'll not be the first to fault it. [Which brings him to his initial query, but he first wishes to ask:] Have you been here for very long?
[voice]
[voice]
Finally:] I -- Since you have been here for that unfortunate length of time, if I may ask for your opinion regarding something?
[voice]
Of course, Your Honor. You needn't even ask permission.
[voice]
Where you do you think a man such as myself would best be suited on this vessel? You did mention Security, of course. But I assume there are other organizations?
[voice]
There are, sir. Security is where those in law enforcement tend to end up, but one needs combat proficiency to flourish there; Tyke, the head of the department, has set out to assemble a formidable fighting force, which means that those who cannot fight struggle to find a place. Other departments are tasked with the day-to-day function of the ship; we have, for instance, an agriculture department who tend to the gardens, a medical department, various scientific research departments, and the like. None is tailored well to your legal knowledge, I fear, but if you have any interests outside the law, one of these might suit you.
[voice]
There's something akin to a "hm" of consideration.] I am not a scientist, nor a doctor, and I know very little of growing plants of the non-household variety.
[He can fight, though. He can set people on fire with very little effort, but he concedes to himself that he'd rather not share that much. There's a wryness that creeps into his voice for the first time in this conversation.] I suppose there's not a department strictly for sorting out legal documents? I have far too much experience with that.
[voice]
humor
what do you do with that]
Well. My own job consists largely of keeping files for security. It is not challenging work, and most likely far below what you usually do, but it is still something to keep one occupied.
[voice]
Ah -- I would not wish to intrude on anything it is you do, Mr. Edgeworth.
[voice]

[voice]
You're very idealistic, Mr. Edgeworth. Do not take me saying that as a slight against your character.
[voice]
No, I -
[He struggles for some way to salvage the situation.]
I'm - merely giving my honest assessment. Believe me, sir, I'm - as realistic as anyone else. Indeed, more realistic than most. Forgive me if I sounded foolish.
[voice]
[voice]
[voice]
Am I embarrassing you? Forgive me.
[voice]
[answer: yes dear god yes oh god why in front of a judge, why does this always happen to him]
I - I apologize for raising my voice, Your Honor -
[voice] ....oh edgeworth
A prosecutor that does not raise his voice is not any prosecutor I've ever heard of. Don't apologize. I will put my faith in your cynicism, if that makes you feel better.
[voice]
I...yes. I - apologies again. It has been a - strange day. My thanks for your forgiveness.
[voice]
You have my... assigned number, I assume, from this conversation. Twenty-eight, three. Please let me know if you need assistance with anything, and I will be glad to help.
[voice]
[voice]
[Aaaand disconnect!]

I am Jean Prouvaire. I-- regret. That I do not know of any task on board suited to your skills, however. I am aware of a group of men and women attempting to instill some form of law upon the place, or scripted government. It includes and would see a use for lawyers, and thinkers of all kinds.
I would be happy to introduce you, if you were of a mind for it.
