I suppose I'm late when it comes to actually introducing myself to the new people, but late is better than never, isn't it?

[He shifts a little bit, adjusting his glasses and managing a polite smile at the camera. Good grief.]

I'm Kabuto Yakushi, I haven't been here as long as others, but I trust that won't make anything I say less valuable. With the departure of the former head of Xenobioloy and Genetics, I believe that would leave me in temporary charge of that department until something permanent is figured out. So, if you have any questions about what we do, what we may be planning on doing, feel free to contact me. Particularly if you're interested in getting involved with the department.

Which, speaking of, I'd rather like to speak to the head of the medical group to see if something can be figured out in regards to sharing resources.

Also, if you can't move to the medbay for whatever reason, feel free to contact me as well. I was a medic back where I come from and since I don't need equipment in order to diagnose and heal, it'd be far more efficient for me to come to you.

Wait- um.

Did you say departures?

I did. That's my best guess as to where someone could have gone. Considering I'm rather sure we haven't docked anywhere in the time.

But I thought they said we couldn't get back.

I never said they returned to where they came from, but they certainly aren't on this ship anymore.

[ one beat, then another. ]

That is so not the most reassuring thing I've heard since I got here.

[Smallest bit of a laugh, good grief.]

Nothing is reassuring on this ship, it'll make life a lot easier in the future.

Or not life, I guess. Since people just disappear into space at random.

You're not worried about it?

Life is a cruel thing, I certainly won't disagree.

And I'm certainly not, as long as it's not myself, I could not care less how many disappear like this. My purpose here, ultimately, is to ensure my own survival, even if if risks that of others.

Guess that's why you're a biologist and not a doctor right?

I can do both, though my primary job was that of a biologist, correct.

[Soft laugh.] Medical was a secondary and typically confined only to the person I had worked under back home.

Okay back it up, I'm a little confused now.

Maybe it's the part where those sciences are supposed to like, you know, focus on the importance of life and you're totally chill with people blinking out and turning into space chow.

Ah. Perhaps I should... explain where I came from a bit better. Where I'm from it's more-or-less a dog-eat-dog type of world. You fight, you do missions, you protect your village or take jobs to survive.

I may be a medic, but I'm not obligated to heal each and every person. At least not when I was there. Honestly, I only did so back then out of pity and for those who were a part of my master's village and order.

But, as I said, it's a bit different here. I have no reason to truly compete with anyone and thus the standards are a bit lax. Hard to kill old habits, however.

Okay, so like some, rural black ops ninja assassin sort of deal. [ her head shakes, and there's a laugh as she runs her hand through her hair. ] Sorry, I guess it's just, you know. Kinda weird trying to get used to the whole 'people from other dimensions' sort of deal. Which you know, you'd think would sink in with the 'you're now on a spaceship in the future'?

All sort of forgoing the idea that I've gone crazy, because that apparently offends people.

Shinobi aren't all assassins, it depends upon their age and rank. But, yes, I suppose you could call us that. And no worries, I don't think any of us are used to any of this quite yet.

I'm surprised I'm not crazy yet, to be perfectly honest.

Well I dunno, it sounds like you've got a pretty good head on your shoulders. Being a scientist I guess you sortof have to right?

Does Xenobiology imply that we may be making stops on other inhabited worlds? Or is this study contained strictly to our ship's rather... Motley crew?

[le polite smile.] My name is Qilby, by the way, and you may count me among those interested in the department.

Mm. Not entirely, I've heard tale that they have stopped somewhere before, but have let only a few off the ship. So assuming it's just the crew, for now, is probably the best way to put it. Though I think there's more than enough interesting crew members to keep us occupied for ages.

[A small bit of a smile in return, tugging on his suit a bit.] A pleasure. And by all means feel free to join us, as far as I know, there's only three of us for so. And little to no organization yet.

I suppose there's also the matter of learning more about who or whatever is perpetrating the attacks on some of the crew members. [he frowns. attacks like the one on that lovely young woman he spoke to only a few days ago.]

... In any case, I believe I shall join you. I understand it's been three months since the ship's seen its new arrivals. What has been accomplished in that time? [a sympathetic look.] Taking into account this alleged lack of organisation, I mean.

Of course. Considering the nature of those on-board, I'm certain it's someone amongst the crew. But as to who it is exactly, I haven't the foggiest as I've yet to get any useful information fro the medical group. You know, something about them not seeming to want to share. Even if it's for the betterment of the rest of us.

[How doe he explain this exactly, considering that he'd only been around for a month or so of this nonsense to begin with. He shifts, adjusting his glasses in the meantime.]

I haven't been here from the very beginning, but from what I gathered, absolutely nothing has been accomplished on our side. There was an attempt by the former head of the department to get blood samples from those aboard, but it was met with resistance and nothing was accomplished. It's... a bit depressing, to be perfectly frank.

[oh my, does he detect a hint of bitterness? inter-departmental politics isn't something he relishes having to navigate again...

if he's disappointed at the lack of tangible results so far, he doesn't show it past his ever-present lazy smile.] Then we'll simply have to rectify that. The former head-- that was... Alexander, yes? Why his departure?

[He's just bitter because he can't get to the DNA he so desperately wants, but that's his own fault, truth be told.]

I have no clue as to why he disappeared as he did, there's no sign and seems to be no sign of any sort of... murder. And, thinking back on it, it was before the new arrivals appeared...

Sounds like a mystery.

But I understand it's not particularly safe to go exploring, much less searching for someone who may be lost out in the ship. [and he sounds truly regretful...] Until it is, we may have to assume that he's either fine on his own or... That one way or another, we may not need to worry about him anymore.

[qilby would have liked to meet this alexander, too.] I don't think his work is unsalvageable, however. [remembering something tavros said earlier...] Perhaps it's simply a matter of, ah... Public relations?

[He shifts a little bit, fidgeting with something in his lap before regarding the device again.] His work was something I was attempting to help him with, thus I do believe it's something easy enough to continue. But, once again, that requires cooperation from the people on the ship or medical deciding to make themselves useful.

[Excuse him, laughing at the public relations bit.] I'll take a guess and assume someone told you about that public debacle? Honestly, people are so worried even if something is for their own good, it's truly disgusting. Particularly when there's no worry of them being left with a lingering wound.

[he doesn't laugh, but his smile may have widened some.] It is, perhaps, not the most reassuring thing when you're brought to a strange ship against your will and asked to help pilot it. And I doubt it's any better when the answer to your question, "what more do they want from me -- my blood?" turns out to be yes.

Inconvenient as it may be, we'll need to earn their trust and co-operation. Not all of us can see the benefits of our study past its fleeting discomfort.

I miss the days where I could just tell someone their blood was needed to help Orochimaru-sama and they'd easily comply. But I shouldn't have expected it to be that easy here, hm?

I even tried to be hospitable and I still got figuratively spit at.

Waking up in a tank of fluid with a tube down my throat was my first clue that things here were not going to be as I knew them.

[the universal-sign-for-curiosity headtilt. if someone were standing next to him, they'd probably get clobbered by his hat.] Orochimaru?

My former master, it's a rather long story I'd rather not get into at this particular time.

But still, having a sample of blood to work with is something I believed most hospital-type establishments would do.

[he nods respectfully. all stories in due time...]

I understand it's the standard procedure in Earth-based facilities, at least. The technology, while not beyond my scope, is something I'm largely unfamiliar with to tell you the truth. On my world, with my people, we had other ways to treat maladies...

[Pinged by that last part, hmm~]

Mind sharing what kind of other ways these would be? We didn't tend to use many instruments in my own and I just can't help but be curious.

[oh! someone he may be able to relate to! qilby looks more animated than he's had in days when he replies.]

In my universe, everything living was suffused with an energy we called Wakfu. I'm afraid I may have to get somewhat poetic here in saying that to us, Wakfu was an ever-flowing circle -- it grew, bloomed, withered, and died in all of us before returning to our Goddess from whence it came. Curing ailments of the body was often a matter of removing an obstruction in the river that was its Wakfu: correct the flow, and everything would return to its proper balance.

My people can manipulate this energy at will, giving, taking, or otherwise altering. All of our other powers stem from this. For anything we couldn't do, there were plenty of herbal remedies; the plants of our world had some unique properties thanks to their magic.

[an apologetic smile. thanks for letting an old man talk about the good old days!] We had considerable technology, but it was always closely tied to nature and our spirituality. Nothing quite like the cold, inorganic metal on this ship.

'Departure'? [Pause.] ...hey, how long has this been going on? I know somebody mentioned months, but...

I can't say for sure, I haven't been here very long, myself. But I would say it's been a good few months or so from what I've heard.

[A bit of a pause, hnng.] And yes, departure. He doesn't appear to be anywhere on this ship, that's the only way I can describe it.

And there's probably no sign of where they went to. [Half question, half statement of probable fact.]

Medic. I'm a trained medic when it comes to chakra, that's what all of us do. It's nothing remotely related to "voodoo".

Something akin to life force, yes. It's not an uncommon thing and that's what basically all of the shinobi use in one way or another.
