[ this device is still somewhat beyond her. but she can now speak through it without much difficulty, which is progress! hours of button-mashing are starting to pay off. even so, she is a little intimidated to possibly be addressing this entire ship.
so if she sounds like she's far away or just really quiet, that would explain why. ]
Uh, hello. [ she's off to a great start! ] I'm not sure just who can hear me, or if anyone can because I might be using this thing improperly.
But I wanted to ask-- [ no, not about the voices and the memories. ] has anyone seen a tall man, dark-haired and bearded, possibly swinging around an obscenely large greatsword?
That would be my brother, Garrett. Garrett Hawke. I was with him before I came here, and haven't seen him since.

Video
A sword like that would be very hard to miss. Unfortunately I have not seen such a thing.
Voice
Who? [ she hasn't worked out the controls for video yet. but her surprise is still evident in the tone of her voice. ] This is--! Hello there.
And well, I am not looking for the sword so much as my brother.
I was with him one moment, and then I awoke here the next.
no subject
That seems to be a familiar story on this ship. I also woke up here with no idea how I had arrived.
no subject
she smiles back, pleased with herself, even if he can't see her. it seems she's getting a bit better with this. ]
In one of those tubes? [ she has no recollection of getting there. it's weird. ] That was terrible.
Do you have any friends or family here with you, at least?
no subject
[Whatever she did worked, because he can see her now.]
Yes, waking up like that was a rather uncomfortable surprise. But I was fortunate enough to find a friend here already, and my brother arrived the same time I did.
I am Thor Odinson. May I know your name?
no subject
[ she both looks and sounds delighted, beaming with no small amount of pride at successfully operating this machine. ]
I am glad to hear that. After an experience such as that, it must have been a relief to see a familiar face.
[ she waves, because she can. ] I'm glad to meet you, ser. My name is Bethany Hawke.
no subject
As for my brother and I... [A slight shrug.] We are not as close as we once were.
There is no one else here familiar to you?
no subject
No, there is not. I have been meeting new people, but there is no one here who I've met to my knowledge.

So the theory is that the ship itself is what brought us here? That would imply a high level of sentience.
[ she frowns. ] How odd! I'm beginning to see how common these anomalies are.

[ she isn't sure how much help she might be if magic is involved. ]
Have you learned anything else about this place?
no subject
no subject
[ she admits this sheepishly. ] I can see some entries contain information, but accessing it is complicated.
But for now I'd be happy just knowing why we are here to begin with.
no subject
I admit I found many of the functions through trial and error. Mostly error.
Why we are here seems to be the primary question most of us have. Unfortunately I have not heard any definitive answer.
no subject
You've done a good job so far. I've only discovered this one by chance, too.
That is troubling. And it does not seem as though whoever is responsible has a care for what we might have been doing before arriving here.
[ although the quarters here are a huge step-up from the solitary cells in the gallows. ]
Was there something happening or about to happen where you are from, as well?
no subject
My brother and I were returning to Asgard after the battle in the city of New York. But we did not arrive and I woke up here instead.
Were you pulled away from something important?
no subject
Did you win that battle, at least? I hope you did.
[ she doesn't want to tell a complete stranger that her mother had been murdered in the most horrendous fashion not long before arriving here. so she downplays it, and simply says: ]
Yes. I had not seen Garrett in a very long time. I was with him when I was brought here.
no subject
[And then he apparently sent his brother to prison. Not exactly happily ever after.]
no subject
It will take a long time to heal.
[ he's trailed off, so she tries to put some cheer back into the conversation. ]
I am sure that it will. And so will this city. The earth, and even people are more resilient than we might think.
no subject
no subject
It's all right. [ she sighs. ] But it is so terribly strange. He and I were in the same place. Then, I was here, and Garrett does not seem to be.
[ she's worried about him. ]
no subject
no subject
I will hope for his arrival, then.
no subject
no subject
Is this such a terrible place, then?
no subject
no subject
I am sorry for your worries, ser. Is your land at peace?
Mine is not. But you are right, I would rather return to Kirkwall. It is strange, here. The technology is beyond my knowledge.
[ and she misses garrett sorely. ]
What sort of threat exists here?
no subject
I can share with you my knowledge of these devices. It is not much, in comparison to others, but it will assist you in some small way.
There are creatures that dwell within the ship called manticores, though the ship itself often seems to wish us harm as well.
no subject
[ since she will already be praying for garrett's continued safety anyhow. ]
Any knowledge is better than the total lack of it, which is what I have. Thank you. That is very kind of you.
Ah. [ she shouldn't really be surprised, should she? ] I was wondering what the catch was. So, are you saying that this ship--itself--is trying to cause us harm?
no subject
[ though robb's doubts about the old gods is still very much a thing. ]
I'd say that this is not a safe place, and do not travel it's halls on your own.
[ because robb's learned from neal, and he's being judicious about his accusations. ]
no subject
[ she doesn't know his gods from andraste. but she still greatly appreciates the offer. ]
You are kind to warn me, ser. I suppose exploring only while others are about will be a good way to meet people, at least.
[ because otherwise, she doesn't know or really trust anyone here. ]
no subject
no subject
But I can defend myself well enough with my magic.
[voice]
You seem to be doing well enough, ma'moiselle!
But I must regret to say that I haven't seen anyone matching that description as of yet. Are there any other descriptors that would point him out more clearly, aside from the sword? Would you have a portrait of him, perhaps?
[voice]
Thank you! [ is that..? no, it can't be an orlesian accent. but it's something familiar, and it cheers her a bit. ]
I.. no, I do not. He is tall, dark-haired and wears a beard. His eyes are a golden brown sort of colour. And he he scowls quite a bit.
[ garrett should come with a sign that says 'approach with caution'. ]
I thank you for wanting to help me, ser.
[voice]
[Those are the best kinds of people. Bahorel is sometimes that kind of people, so perhaps they will get along. Or absolutely not at all. ... Probably not at all, let's be honest.]
But of course, Mlle. Hawke! And my name is Ambrose Bahorel, that you may have a name to call me by if you require any further assistance in the future. [He dips his head in a salutatory bow, because talking to people not in the same room, what is this concept.]
[voice]
That's just how he usually is. He doesn't mean to frighten anyone. [ much. ] Ah, yes! He used to be a soldier, but he has always been a fine warrior.
[ probably not at all. garrett doesn't have a nice thing to say to anybody except.. her, really. ]
Oh, my name is Bethany. You can just call me that, ser. It's a pleasure to meet you, by the way.
[ and she does, too. because she is also used to be face-to-face with whoever she speaks to. this machine is very impersonal and she isn't certain she likes that. ]
[voice]
You must be proud of him, then, for all of his accomplishments.
[In Bahorel's experience, soldiers were not the most pleasant of fellows, but perhaps this Garrett's change in occupation spoke truer of his alliance toward humanity than any army pawn. Ah, well. At least you're nice enough, and it's not like all soldiers were like the National Guard.]
Bethany, the pleasure is mine, to be sure. [With his winningest smile.]
[voice]
I am indeed. [ four years ago, they were all-but homeless, and then indentured into servitude. garrett has risen remarkably high. she can only hope he keeps doing so. ]
[ he might not be pleasant with most people, but garrett is a good man. everything he's done has been for their family and for her since before their father died. ]
Have you been here very long, ser?
