A discovery!

[Hello, Tranquility. Have a Combeferre who is obviously fascinated by something or other, by the look of intense concentration on his face as he peers out at the camera. And he’s even managing to focus on his face and not his eyebrows, so there is some progress there at least. And when he begins speaking, well, it’s obvious that SOMETHING has happened.]

Well. Tranquility. It appears that there is more on board here than we would have first imagined. The media libraries in particular, when one really attempts to delve into the ship itself, can be more useful than we’ve seen so far. I’ve come across [He snooped across, let’s be honest.]

A device which projects to my communicator and has allowed me to download

this

[Combeferre is looking into the screen expectantly again, leaning forward a little as he does this.]

I...think this has something to do with the structure of the ship perhaps? A building plan? A schematic perhaps, for engineering? There should be some way for me to send everyone a copy if someone could be of assistance in terms of the programing needed to do that? I am not quite sure WHAT I’ve found here but I would welcome any help in figuring this out.

[text later:

Edit:

With the help of the Communications department, the information should be available to all passengers who would like to have a look.

Interesting. I don't think a lack of delving has been the problem, however.

[L is skeptical of luck. It's useful when it happens, but you can never rely on it. This can't really be happy chance: either the file was placed there to be found, or the more people were looking, the greater the probability that someone would find something. Probably the latter, although the former had implications that would be more relevant and more unsettling.]

If you need help, you can always visit the Communications department.

Someone is always available.

[Someone is always lurking on public conversations, he means--among other things.]

Where in particular did you find this? Which area of the media libraries, that is?

[OOC: I'm not sure what your intentions were in terms of who would help out with this, but it's fine to show up in Comms action-wise if you need to! It's on the first floor in a bunch of converted former passenger rooms. There may also be some physically closer character who can help. :|a ]

Yes. Entirely useful.

We're on the first floor, among the passenger quarters. If you miss us, you'll probably stumble into Stark's laboratory... you'll know the difference. [That last bit is said with dry humor.]

I'll help you if I'm here, but if I've gone, anyone else will be able to do the same.

[He won't have gone; instead, he'll be keeping an eye out for Combeferre.]
ryuuzaki: (hi there)

[He sounds amused when he replies, via communicator,]

I'm not sure I'd let Stark hear you saying that.

[ACTION: Combeferre's identity is obvious, but L's--"Ryuuzaki"'s--is not, except that his voice is recognizable. Ryuuzaki turns out to be a pale and slouching young man with longish dark hair, a languid, listless disposition, and sharp grey eyes. He waves Combeferre into the Communications department, with all its screens and machinery. A half-consumed cup of heavily sugared coffee is on the desk where he has obviously been sitting; its scent fills the area nearby.

He gestures to a seat near his own.]

Monsieur Combeferre. Let's see what you have, please.

[He's bored, and French is so early a second language for him that it's almost in tandem with his first; he decides to use it now, purely for his own entertainment. His accent is good, and he's fluent enough that he thinks Combeferre might not notice much difference. But it's the French of the late 20th century.]

[action forever!]

[L accepts the device, holds it between the tips of his thumbs and forefingers as if it's exceptionally delicate, and peers at it; it seems to work simply enough, more or less like wi-fi and like some of the other items around the ship.]

I see. Some of the technology here is advanced compared to what I'm used to, but this isn't too much so. It's become possible to transfer information through... [an almost imperceptible hesitation; how to explain this...?] specific patterns of disturbance in the air. We have instruments that are sensitive enough to measure it and interpret the messages.

This works approximately the same way that the communication devices do, except that it's automated--there's no one on the other end controlling it.

Had you only just found it when you spoke on the network earlier?

[OOC: I'm making this up as I go along, so if I've gotten the technology involved disastrously wrong... someone please nudge me, or we can handwave it in later tags. I'm assuming this thing is not a datapad, but something more special. Also, I'm not assuming the presence or absence of any other Comms people in the room--I just don't know who else thinks their character would have been around at this time.]
ryuuzaki: (eyes - watchful)

[L nods, and his aspect brightens, although it doesn't completely reach his eyes.]

Yes. It was set to activate when it was turned on. To be honest, it was most likely created for that purpose.

[His gaze remains flat and intense, interested.

It isn't Combeferre... on their brief acquaintance and his own observation, L is more inclined to like him than not, or at least to see him as benign. Instead, it's the technology, and the circumstances under which Combeferre has found it, and the nature of L's own personality... the entire situation. It occurs to L to think twice about Combeferre's story (is he who he seems to be, did he find this where he says he did), but he quickly dismisses his own suspicions; it's easy to create more complicated stories when the situation is already profoundly bizarre in itself and there are reasons to be on high alert. The man has a variety of friends on the ship who seem to have come from his own place and time almost simultaneously and who seem to be normal passengers like anyone else, unremarkable in and of themselves given the possible variables. There's no good reason, apart from paranoia that would go well beyond what's useful, to suspect Combeferre of coming up with this on his own.]

What I want to know is whether or not this information exists elsewhere in the system--was someone attempting to copy it, or did they mean to add to the archives that we have?

[Stealing it or planting it? The device itself would have to have input features as well as output ones. And then, who? Ward, Smiley... it seemed that each would have different motivations, and there was no guarantee that no other parties were involved or that the ordinary abducted passengers knew of the existence and identities of all the potential players. What about the man from Pernambuco? What about the lockers?]

However, that really isn't relevant at the moment. I could use this to transfer the file to my own device, but I think... let's see your communicator. I'd like you to try to send a copy of the file to me.
