Is anybody here a fan of Poe? I got this in my locker last jump:

[There's the sound of a paper rustling. Firo clears his throat.]

"Thy soul shall find itself alone
‘Mid dark thoughts of the gray tombstone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy..."

[He continues to read, impatiently speeding up at the end so the lines of the last stanza run together.]

To be honest, I never really got the end back when my friend used to read it. But it’s creepy, isn’t it? Really suits this place.

What I'm wonderin' about is if it's supposed to be some sortta threat or message. 'Cause just comin' out and sayin' it would be too easy, right?

So like movies, then? We've got those where I'm from--there's sound and everything!

Yes, like that. What's your favorite movie?

Hard to pick. I haven't actually been to the movies in a while... Billy the Kid came out a few years ago. That one was pretty good! What kinda movies do you like?

I like the ones about space and intergalactic travel.

[So basically movies that could take place aboard the tranquility.]

And superhero movies.

Even after all this?

[Firo's never been picky about his movies or books, but he doesn't think he's going to be touching anything sci-fi as long as his memories of the Tranquility are alive.]

I don't think I've heard of a superhero movie before. What're those?

[Simon nods and tries not to smile, because smiling about it would be weird, right?]

It's a movie about someone who has super powers and uses them for good, usually against a bad guy with powers of their own.

So like your typical western or gangster movie, but replace the horses and guns with somethin' really off the wall? Are there any of those here?

[It sounds like another flavor of the classic good versus evil conflict, which Firo's found he tends to enjoy. Despite being what would be considered one of the bad guys.]

Do you mean, are there any superheroes?

Nah, I was talkin' about the movies.

[But now he's curious.]

But since you mention it, are there any superheroes here? It sounds like something made up.

[There's nothing like superheroes where he comes from, unless you count immortals. He tends to assume that anything else with special powers is just a fantasy.]

[Simon nods.]

I've spoken to a couple. And there are people who want to be.

What kinda "super powers" did those people have?

Flight. Invisibility.

Lots of money.

How does havin' money get in the same category as those other two?

More than one superhero has used his fortune. It enables them to buy weapons and gadgets that the normal person couldn't dream of.

They say money is power... But if you're just lettin' your weapons do the talkin', does it really count? You don't say a guy's super strong just because he has a tommy gun and can shoot it.

I guess...that would make him more of an action hero.

[He laughs, shrugging. The semantics really don't matter all that much to him.]

Is that like a rich Dick Tracy from the future?

Yes, very much. Are you a fan of Dick Tracy?

Your world has that too?

I wouldn't say I'm a fan, but I've read a few of 'em. It's the kinda thing I think I woulda' liked more as a kid. You got a lotta comics like that where you come from?

[The formula's still somewhat new in his time.]

[Another nod and a brighter smile.]

I've always been a big fan of comic books.

[With the other guy looking so happy, Firo can't help but smile back.]

Oh yeah? What're your favorites?

I always liked Batman. He was sort of dark and had all these cool toys.

Bat... man? Like a cross between a guy and a bat?

[He's imagining some strange mutant.]

It's just a costume. And because he is the night.
