VIDEO/ACTION

[ He'll casually be tapping the device; to check if this is on. The camera is moving, you can tell he's in one of the Lounges in the Holodecks. ]

Is it on? - Fuck, I'm usually really excellent at turning things on. I am not spending another 20 minutes rambling only to find it didn't record agai- oh, okay, there red dot. Good. Spot on. Bloody thing works.

[ Hello Tranquility, after a few more movements, he faces it towards himself. there's a rather chatty brown haired pretty boy grinning at the camera. ]

Hello there, Citizens of Starship Enterprise Registry 'We are fucked'. As much as I appreciate a good kidnapping - gelatinized kool aid too; didn't see that one comin' - I really was in the middle of something prett-tay important. Since there's a bunch of us joining you already rather large and zany bunch - I was wondering if the supernatural - actually - preternatural, let's be politically correct here, hold any meaning to any of you? Like what's the mystic to mortal ratio on this ship?

Any ghost busters references will be met with extreme sarcasm; or declarations of 'who ya gonna call?'

[like, only about half of that made any sense whatsoever but okay let's just focus on what Qilby can answer--]

It may. What constitutes the "supernatural" on your world?

Aah-- then I take it magic is unusual where you're from?

[he's seen them before, the planets and their races who hadn't lived long enough to delve into those secrets, or who simply didn't have the capacity to make anything meaningful of it. pity was too patronising a word, but there's a definite, almost apologetic feel to the smile he gives in reply.]

All of my people have the ability to harness this... Magic, if you will. As do many others in our star system and beyond, though theirs are different variations on the same theme. It's not mumbo jumbo to us, though there is the occasional surprise or two.
dissenter: (let me sing you the song of my people.)

Certainly not the kind of world where you'd have to legalise magic.

The source of all mysticism on my world was the energy of life itself; it was everywhere, unavoidable, suffused in every plant, animal, and person. Needless to say, mine was a very verdant planet as a result. Ah-- or is that the other way 'round...?

[a wry look.] It's a far cry from our new home here. Though I must say the prospect of space travel's exciting.

[ there's a little fumbling with the device - DG's still trying to figure it out - but soon she's peering back at Kane with a wry smile. ]

If it helps, you're not the only one who was in the middle of something. [ being reunited with her long-lost family just after saving her new found homeworld? yeah, kind of a biggie. ] And...okay, I guess I'm all mystical or whatever. I can do magic.

Somehow I don't think being convenient's high on the priority list here. [ understatement, oh yes. ]

Well I did only just find out about it last week, I'm still getting used to the idea. So: yeah, I can do magic. My name is DG and I'm a witch.

[ the first step to recovery is admitting you have an...enchantment. or something. ]

[Oh my God. Topher can't even..]

Okay, I can... Kinda grok robots in this epic space opera we're all acting out here, but... magic? When was the last time a Red Shirt died because he got eaten by a grue? Am the only one here even a little bit grounded in reality?

We're in space. Theoretically. You don't get any more... Final Frontier-y than that. And why would anyone put wizards in space. That's so... Meta. It's like ninjas and pirates.
andblockbuster: (I'll tell Seth Green's story.)

[personal profile] andblockbuster 2012-02-14 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Neither has Topher. Clearly when these meetings happen... Topher's changing his theory about this place. They're being punked. Obvs.]

And the twist is.. What? We're all on an abandoned soundstage somewhere in Canada, because some hasbeen director couldn't let a bad idea go? Still makes more sense than anything else I've heard.

Not yet. I mean... Okay, I'm gonna own up to my whole "it's some kind of sick mind experiment taking place in either a dream-state or deep in the unconscious mind for those of us who apparently don't sleep" theory, but I'm a neurologist and I'm supposed to think like that. But there are fewer Communists in my theory.

Topher. ...Wait. Exorcist? Really? So, like the... Father Merrin, pea soup-spewing, "power of Christ" spiel? [Exorcists who believe in spells. That's just... Illogical. And not Catholic. Life is so weird.]
andblockbuster: (Pocahontas has perfect hair.)

[personal profile] andblockbuster 2012-02-15 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
[There's a lot of slow nodding, because Topher is torn between 'you are insane and I don't want to be near you' to 'YOU MAY WELL BE ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTANDS ME. PLEASE NEVER LEAVE.']

Uh. A month ago, actually. I'm still adjusting to the whole... You know. [A vague handflail, indicating the whole of... Creepy spaceship.]

I do believe we're expected to refer to them as police officers now. [ A delicate smirk; she's not proving a point or arguing, if anything she's agreeing. ] That's terribly personable of you. A lot of newcomers really couldn't care less who they offend when they first arrive.

But as to answering your question - I do believe there is quite a healthy mix. You'll find all sorts here but I really don't think I could tell you who is in the minority nowadays. [ An airy gesture. ] 'People come and go so quickly here'.

Does that count?

Gods of the Furthest Ring, similar to what most of us squishy humans know as Lovecraftian eldritch abominations.
Though 'abomination' is hardly an appropriate word choice for those creatures.
I believe that may be sufficient to answer both of your questions.

I wonder, just what is the difference between "preternatural" and "supernatural"?
Is one really more correct than the other?

Of course, one must define "natural" before anyone can identify that which is more than that.
So, how would you define it?
