I've been thinking about skills and teaching and that everyone has something they can do really well.

[Harry looks a bit sheepish making a network post, but when he's got an idea rattling around in his head, he needs to get it out. He's getting a bit better about thinking before speaking, but it's going to be a while before it becomes a habit.]

So, I was wondering, what can you do? What's your talent? And what can you teach? And, if you can teach something, would you be willing to share it with the rest of us here?

I can do magic and I'm not great at it, but I'd be happy to work with anyone else who wants to learn together.

I'm a wizard. I haven't really specialized in anything yet.

Oh!
- some charms: spells to make objects do things or be useful
- a bit of transfiguration: does what it says on the tin, makes one thing into or like something else
- a defence is what I'm best at, which is sort of like duelling with magic?
- not bad at potions, but only with instructions handy

it does, though i know of only dueling. what is the purpose of the others beyond that which you have said?

They're all just tools, I suppose. You can use them in all sorts of useful ways - like a potion to help with a cold, or transfiguring your luggage so it's smaller and lighter.

If you duel and would like a partner to practice with, I'm not great, but I'd love it try.

that does sound convenient. would that my world had such things to make our lives that much more comfortable.

i have not dueled in many, many years. is it even safe to do such a thing upon this vessel?

I think if it's careful and controlled and the room well warded before anyone begins, I can't see why not? We learned in school when we were children - admittedly with a child's power, but still the point stands.

that is assuming your wards are effective towards other forms of magics, though i am not sure if they are or are not similar.

perhaps, in time. i am not yet well enough for a duel of any sort, nor do i think my watch will allow me to have one.

You'd think that someone would've tested how well wards work by now, but I suppose people have had other things on their minds.

I am considered proficient enough in archery to teach it, but I would not say it is difficult to learn. Only that it is long and tedious.

I've never used a bow before, but I can imagine that it would be a difficult thing to learn. How long have you been practicing?

To learn to use a bow would be simple. To learn to use it in a practical manner for practical purposes would take many years.

..I do not recall the numbers exactly. But it is far longer than you have been alive, perhaps.

I don't think so? I didn't really learn much else in school or anything.

You don't have to be in school to learn useful things. I mean, most of the things I can do that are actually useful up here weren't part of school.

Generally, people use a wand and an incantation, or sometimes a potion. Wandless and voiceless magic are possible, but rarely done because they're really tricky and not everyone has the ability.

If you want to know how magic itself works, I haven't a clue. It just does?

Sometimes it's better to let the forces of the universe do their own thing, undeterred by a human compulsion to rip it apart and find what makes it tick.
I prefer wands, myself.

I am unsure as to whether my powers were gifted to me at the appropriate time or if the ability was inherent.
Whatever the case, I seem to have a predisposition for a kind of clairvoyance.

Have you found your powers to be curtailed aboard this ship?
Were you able to perform certain feats back home that you cannot here?

It makes sense, of course.
If an ability could, in some way, explain our situation or remove us from these circumstances entirely, the ability is dampened.

It makes sense, but it bothers me to think that someone or something could cut a person off from one of their senses.

The most we can do is adapt and not let it be a hindrance.
