you think some things would be sort of easy to learn after being here a while. i dunno, maybe theyre not. but ive got a question for you

if youre missing something, how can you get it back? is it worth it? what kinda things are really worth missing when you usually havent got it anyway

i miss a lot of stuff. i miss flying but i dont miss being home. i dont wanna miss people but

[ His eyebrows go up at that, not sure he should be grateful she waited or not. ]

Yeah. But you can call me Bells. [ He moves into the kitchen so he's not just hanging out between it and the corridor. ] Who're you?

Alex. Alex Millar, considering we're on a big ship and there's bound to be a million other Alexes around, anyway. [She hands him the blue mug with the sunflowers, keeping the green one to herself.] I should have asked where you were a bloke or not. My bad!

You're the only Alex I know right now. [ There's a shrug, and he's looking at the cup rather than her face, trying to decipher mysteries in the liquid there. Unfortunately, he doesn't find any.

His fingers tighten around it. ] Does that, uh, bother you? That I'm a guy?

Should it have? Not really. [Half of her tea is already gone, drained before his arrival, so she dispenses more hot water into her mug, leaning awkwardly against the table.] You just never know when people text each other all over the network. Me, I was thrilled to show everyone my face when they gave me one of these communicator things. Nice to be seen, isn't it?

I don't have a problem being seen. [ It's snippy, and he bites his tongue, frowning even as he looks at her. ] There're just things I wanna know that I can't ask because I'm trying to figure out how to fix what I fucked up.

Well, not all of us have had that luxury. [Her ghostly days had rendered her invisible almost to all.] Whatever it is, consider it your second chance. You do want to fix things, after all.

[ He stares at her for a while at the first comment, not really getting it. So, he shrugs it off. ]

Maybe being here already is a second chance for me. Even if I wanna fix it, it doesn't mean it'll happen.

An optimistic one, aren't you. But let's focus on the second chance thing! Even if it doesn't work out you can still move on from... Whatever it is.

I dunno. It's not that easy for me. [ There's a pause, and he finally helps himself to a seat, slouching in it. ] And I don't think I've seen you before. Did you get here last jump?

[ His answer for everything. ]

Well, uh. When you care about someone, it kinda happens. What else would there be?

You can tell me. I won't tease you about it.

You think I'd care if you teased me? [ He sounds aggravated, so he leaves the cup alone and runs his hands through his hair. ] I dunno. It's not platonic. I love, uh. Well, it's something deeper than that.

I've never really cared about anyone like that before.

Yeah, I think you would! Men normally care. Anyone would. It's only normal.

[Her face softens somewhat] Then why not set things right?

Maybe I'm not so normal. [ Because he's not, though it's not like he's going to explain if she doesn't ask. ] I have to give 'em time. Space or whatever. And I'm not sure what to do to fix it anyway.

Space is good! Not many men get that, mind.

What do you mean, not "normal"? You're not human? It's alright if you tell me. Supernatural's becoming the norm around here.

That's usually what I mean when I say not normal. Ever heard of angels?

Sort of. I was in Hell before showing up here, and there's not a lot of grace left when you've been down there as long as I have.

There's only one Hell I know of. And I dunno. Angels aren't much without it, you know.

I never said I was gonna stop existing. [ He looks at her once, rubbing at the back of his neck. ] That part's complicated, but it's not something I'm worrying about right now.
