001. Harry Potter and the Network Introduction

[The video feed shows a young man in his late teens or early twenties. He's not nervous, but out of habit he runs a hand through the messy black fringe of his hair before speaking.]

Hullo, I'm Harry. From what I've seen the usual thing to do here is to ask if there's a way home or if there are others from home here. If you're here, say hi, and if you're not here -- well, I guess you won't speak up then?

I'm not very good at staying still, so if there's something genuinely useful I could be doing, let me know? I'm not exactly 'space skilled', but I'm a quick study and I've seen a bit of Space: 1999.

[Yes, he wants to go home, but the need to return isn't as desperate as it would've been a few months ago. Harry is almost relieved to admit that the war is over and his part has been played.

Still, being pulled into space has left him feeling wrong-footed rather than angry.]

I can't say I have much experience with this, but there are certain jobs people have here. Um. Security, and there's a garden that's managed by a few crew members..

[ familiar face saying a familiar name. weird. she's unreasonably nervous and she can't sort out why, not really, not when she's just staring at the screen of her communicator trying to make sense of this. ]

[For a moment it looks like he's going to say 'hi' again, but catches himself at the last minute.]

James is my dad. A James, anyway.

[Timetravel does wonky things and while that's all a bit mental, it's not beyond the realm of wizardly normalcy.]

A James Potter. James is your father.

[ there's a pause there, and she's squinting, because that's- mad, isn't it? it's completely mad. impossible. well, okay, not so impossible when Sirius is a year older and Remus is a year younger and they're in space but- okay. ]

If you-

If you're actually James, and you're trying to pull one over on me, I will jinx you. Don't think I won't because you've only just arrived here. You- You can't just do things like that, have a laugh because you're on this tiny little screen and I can't tell for certain-- [ raaambling ]

[Harry takes a deep breath and fusses with something off-screen. He's rubbing at the scars on the back of his hand.]

I'm not James Potter. I'm Harry Potter and I'm from a future. Maybe not the future, because we're on a spaceship and I can't really tell. I'm pretty sure I wasn't messing with a timeturner before I got here, but ...

No, it likely wasn't anything you did. None of us meant to end up here.

[ fiiidgeting ]

I'm sorry I'm acting so strange, I can't completely wrap my mind around the time travel aspect of this ship being so.. broad. A couple years difference is one thing, but you- You're probably out of Hogwarts by now, yes? -- Assuming you were a student at Hogwarts. I can't imagine James' son attending anywhere else.

It really is a pleasure to meet you, Harry, even if I'm acting like a complete knob about all this. I'm a fr- I'm. James and I go to school together.

I was and I missed a bit of time, so I'm not too sure if I still need to go back and catch-up or if they'll let me take my NEWTS as-is.

We can get back eventually, right?

It's complicated. If there is a way, nobody has managed to figure it out yet. Though people seem to leave as often as they show up, so I don't think it's in our control either way.

[Harry looks as if he's about to say one thing, but then quickly changes his mind.]

I've been told that boredom is one of the biggest threats here; what do you do?

That sounds quite accurate, actually. Although I spend the majority of my time in the library, to be perfectly honest.

I've never really been much of a reader, but I guess with not much else to do, I could give it a try.

[That's not entirely true. While he'd rather avoid his textbooks, he'd read the paper almost religiously.]

There are a few recreational rooms as well, if you're more interested in athletics. Muggle sports, mostly, like basketball and the like. Not that I would ever discourage anyone from spending time in the library! I just.. get that it's not everyone's cup of tea.
