Hullo, Tranquility. I really do hope everyone's not, um. Falling comatose anymore. Does look like the pods are staying empty this time, so that's a good sign, right?

And it's good to have the network back up. I wish we lot in Comms could take credit for that, but the truth is I don't think our fiddling did much good at all. Sorry about that. Guess we still have a lot to learn.

I know it's a morbid sort of way to end a transmission, but- just putting a reminder out there about the Memorial list. We ought to have some real physical work on the memorial itself starting soon, and I'd really like to collect all the names we can before we start building.

PRIVATE TO COMMS: I'm going to keep saying this until you're tired of hearing it- it's really good to have you all back. Have we had any reliable leads on new recruits? The two who volunteered last month did a good job, I think.

If anything, the pods being empty this time makes it seem less intentional. Not necessarily saying that it is't intentional though.

Can't honestly decide which I prefer. I mean on the one hand, the idea of living on a ship that's deliberately trying to hurt us, or at least toy with us, is disturbing. But on the other hand, the idea of there being no rhyme or reason to anything that's happening is pretty bad too.

I think I'm almost more comfortable with there being some kind of intelligence behind it.

We could only predict or determine so much. There is always a bit of randomness to things. People are not predictable either.

True, but there are always patterns to things, even to how people act. And you can predict those, if you've the right data.

This ship, though. Sometimes it feels like it acts like a person. Maybe we'd be able to anticipate things better if we started looking at it that way. I mean, it's not impossible that the systems could be partially organic, so I suppose it's also not completely inconceivable that it could even partially sentient somehow.

To an extent, you can predict others. But that's part of the fun of people - the fact that all the date won't necessarily give you the correct answer.

I don't know, I find it comforting if the ship seems like a living being. It means that there is a part of it that gives it a likeness to us.

You're a people person, aren't you? Because honestly, I am way better with nice, logical, predictable things. People are mad and chaotic and don't make a bloody bit of sense.

Means it's got our weaknesses and failings and ugly parts, too, though. Is it worth that trade-off, do you think?

In a matter of speaking, I am. People make plenty of sense when you take a moment, it's just a matter that you have to make sense of it. Logical problems already have all the numbers laid out for you.

Commemorating them puts people at peace, makes them feel less guilty. They get forgotten faster. Noble as your intentions may be, you are commemorating your fallen cohort to the recesses of memory.

Having your name in a place where people can see it, and be reminded that you existed, that you were there and you meant enough to someone that they wanted to remember you -- there are worse things. At least it's not just a dusty storage room with a box of your belongings, that no one ever goes into.

[Kate looks at the list and frowns. That's a lot of names. Even if it is on a ship this size.]

Are there records of how they died?

Not all of them did, so far as we know. Some of them just weren't there anymore after we woke up from a jump. The ones who did die here, though, I guess Security must have records. You might try talking to Tyke.

Who's Tyke? [She's heard a few names tossed around, but that one doesn't sound familiar.]

She's in Security. Don't know exactly what her job is, but I know she's involved with investigations.

I'll have to look her up. [Kate pauses.]

Not all of them. Not even most of them, that I know of. Mostly I think they're people who left during a jump. Got into their pods but weren't there when everyone woke up.

shit. i wonder if they go home or just get dumped off on a different spaceship.

I'm going to continue believing they go home until proven otherwise. But I think there are one or two here who've gone and come back. Maybe they could tell you.

I'm a lot less busy now that everyone's recovered from their unexpected naps, and the systems all seem to be working properly. Tell you what, if you pick a time, I'll make sure I'm not busy.

That was mostly the reaction. I've been too busy getting settled to really think about it.

Less people being stuck in comas and trapped is always a plus, or as much of one as we're going to get here.

The less we have of anything around here that isn't coffee or company is a plus. Or food, god I hope I didn't just jinx us into a food shortage.
