[Tommy's transmitting this from the bar, where he basically has been living ever since his last post. He sounds a little distant, distracted, and very very drunk.] I had a wife back home. Jeanie... We married before I shipped out to Iraq. Never even had a chance to open our wedding gifts. [Gifts that he shot.] Never will, now. [BECAUSE HE SHOT THEM. Also, he's in space. Which is good, since she has a restraining order against him.]

I keep thinking about what I'd do if I ever saw her again. What I'd say... [How he'd make things right.]

I know I'm new here, but I can't be the only one missing someone. You all have somebody, right?

[He's quiet for a while, then:]

What would you say if you could see 'em again?

[OOC: To folks I owe tags to: I have not forgotten! Just gonna play catch up later today.]

[They all do because somebody has to. There are people who truly care for the good of others, even complete strangers. And most times, they want nothing in return.]

I didn't have a choice.

A friend of mine flipped out and blew a hole through my chest. But I'm alright now!

You'd have to ask someone who's disappeared and come back. Assuming they even remember it. [ She likes to believe that people - living people - are sent back home rather than tossed out into space to float around forever, or sent to some other hellhole. ]

So I keep hearing.

You never said what you would say to your wife.

Not sure how anyone's gonna break the lock on those things. Our tattoos get us in places - I think all the locks are on computers.

[ that could easily be his life in a few years, minus Iraq. but he's always saving the world and that's fine as long as Annabeth's at his side but who'd want that life forever? ] Maybe you should try to, when you go home.

I'd probably ask Annabeth something dumb like, 'have I mentioned how much the gods really suck yet?' It's not much but it serves as an ice breaker.

You should turn off your comm. This probably isn't something you want everyone to know.

i was pissed too. but then, they aren't coming back, at least not for me.

i just didn't want to be angry anymore, after a while.

[ He wants to ask why Tommy didn't open the gifts, but would that count as prying? ]

so how did you and jeanie meet?

Maybe not for everybody, back where I came from. But for me? Yeah, pretty much. By a lot.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to have better food supplies and fresher air. And like I said, it'd be great if Sharon or D'Anna could be here. [Any Sharon or D'Anna, really, although the Sharon calling herself "Athena" might be a little pissy if coming here meant being separated from her daughter.] But it's really not that bad here.

Because there must be a way home. All doors open both ways. All roads run both ways. And we all of us have tasks that we must complete.

You must have missed the space plague then. A lot of people nearly died a few months ago.

I don't know if aliens are the ones behind this.

"I've been to space."

She wouldn't believe it, but I'd be perfectly fine with being morally superior without her believing.

[ she listens even as she pours the same mix of Whatever the Fuck she managed to make last time, something strong but not absolutely disgusting like most of the liquor here was on its own. she's not shocked or disappointed by his answer, finds it normal, yeah. it's the same reasons why most people choose to do... anything, really. just to have something. but there comes a level of bravery in joining the armed forces, a willingness to go through hell to earn something. those implications aren't lost on her.

by the time he makes that last note about family, his drink is refilled and being set down on the bar in front of him.
]

Well, cheers to you anyway, dude. I've always been way too selfish to even think about joining the army or anything like that. I was never really cut out for that kinda thing.
