"Safety." You think who, precisely, will take exception to this? Ward and Resnik? The smile?

Who knows? But it seems clear that someone took exception to Hotspur's intent to freely share information, so why take unnecessary risks?

Why take unnecessary risks? Perhaps to show new arrivals that we're not all paranoid power-hoarders, hiding behind locks and encryptions and filters that go to three people? You're recirculating old information - old information that is discussed freely and openly amongst nearly all other people. By doing so under the veil of anonymity, you're perpetuating that despicable culture that has formed here.

Old information that newcomers still don't always see and often ask questions about on the network. Recirculating this information and adding to it over time helps keep everyone on the same page, no matter how short a time they've been here. It may seem repetitive to you, but as long as people find it useful, we'll keep it up.

As for the culture that has formed here, it isn't something we chose. If we're paranoid and hiding, it's because we have very good reason for it. When this ship stops handing us nightmares and murders, then we can talk about being more open.

I'm not saying it's repetitive; I've no quibble whatsoever with you sharing the information. Indeed, you've my thanks and commendations for compiling it at all. My quibble is with the fact that any number of people have spoken about it openly altogether without attracting notice, let alone facing repercussions; for you to fear repercussions is illogical.

And we've been dealt a sorry hand; there's no question about that. But can we not choose how we react? Why do so many people here comport themselves as though they've no choice save suspicion and hatred, when cooperation would lead us so much further down the path of progress?

It's true people have shared this information openly, and the fact is that much of it was published openly when it first occurred. However, we're also open to information submitted to us by anonymous parties, information that may not be freely available elsewhere. If such a service had been available to Hotspur, he could still be alive today. Whatever he discovered could now be common knowledge, and potentially helpful.

It's in the expectation that such information may be made available to us at some point that we remain very careful not to reveal our identities, or the identities of anyone who provides us with new information. It's also possible that whoever took exception to Hotspur's knowledge may object to the organized gathering of information in general. While it would be unproductive for such a person to attack those who share the information post, attacking those who created it could potentially stop all future attempts to organize knowledge. Fear is a powerful thing.

I understand your point of view, and I can't claim anyone is happy with the suspicion and paranoia that runs rampant here. But aside from ourselves, we all have other people to protect as well. We don't feel it's worth risking everything for the hope of a more cooperative environment, not when things here have proven so fragile.

A question, perhaps philosophical in nature, related indirectly. Would you protect the welfare of those about whom you care at the expense of the welfare of the larger mass you don't know?

I can only speak on my own behalf, but sometimes. It depends entirely on the circumstances. But I do genuinely care about the welfare of the people on the ship, whether or not I know them personally. The greater good, you might call it. Otherwise, I wouldn't be doing this at all.

Think about having that person you love on board this ship, and being forced to choose between saving them from danger, or saving everyone else and letting the one you love suffer or even be killed. Logically, it's a no-brainer. Emotionally, it isn't so cut and dry. Some things are more impossible to live with than others, and sometimes making the logical decision cuts too deeply to bare. Sometimes I'm selfish.

[Stupid. It takes him too long to respond, because he's consumed with thoughts - his dad being here. His dad dying again. Letting it happen. It's a stupid hypothetical scenario and he's stupid to find himself overwhelmed by it and he's stupid to be so weak, but even so it takes him too long.]

Then perhaps it is better not to love.

People who don't love are sociopaths. Besides, you're applying logic to emotion, and emotion doesn't work like that. Love happens whether you ask for it or not. And it makes everything worthwhile, even if it sometimes makes you a fool in the process.

That's both disturbing, and in my experience, untrue. Can you honestly say there's not one person on this ship you care about more than most others? It doesn't have to be someone you love, just someone you care about.
