[Jane had to do it sooner or later. It's embarrassing, yeah, but everyone will know sooner or later, living on top of each other like this.]

Hey, ship.

I need a sponsor. Like an NA sponsor. Or AA, I'm not picky. Anyone who's up for helping someone get through the 12 steps. If you have any experience--or don't, you're just interested--I'll tell you more.

Also, where can someone find a decent conditioner around here? Please tell me I don't have to keep using the one in the showers. It's giving me split ends.

Twelve steps for what? [ A pause. ] Why not just one? Or none at all?

[Great. Already someone who doesn't get it. She lights a cigarette.]

It's a program for recovering from drug addiction. The twelve steps are how you work through it.

I like to think I'm pretty good with moral support. Could even write you a cheer, if that's what you need.

[But hopefully you don't.]

[She switches to audio. This guy seems okay enough.]

Thanks, but that's not exactly what I need. And what are you, a cheerleader?

Not exactly, no. They said I didn't have the legs for the uniform.

So what do you need? Tell me.

I need another addict.

[Jesse and Lisbeth can't sponsor her, she knows that. They're too close to the problem--to her.]

Or even just someone who knows the program. I left my Big Book in another universe. I probably have half of it memorized, by now, but that doesn't really help. I need someone to keep me honest.

I have read about the program.

How familiar are you with it?

I know the rules of conduct and how to refer someone to the program.

I wish I was more familiar with it. It's not the sort of thing anyone should have to go through alone.

[She sucks on her cigarette like it's personally offended her.]

It's not as if it's your fault, unless this ship includes time travel and you really wanted to mess with a sixteen-year-old.

[Then Jane settles back to wait. Jesse has been hovering over her like he thinks she'll disappear if he lets her out of her sight, so finally she conspired with Lisbeth to get him away for a while so she could do this. She didn't want to vet potential sponsors in front of the boyfriend who just said he loved her. She knew he'd accept anything she said, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that she was ashamed.

When Edgeworth shows up she's sitting on the edge of the bed--one of the beds. They brought in more mattresses like she suggested, two on the floor side by side, and it hadn't been as awkward as she'd been worried it might be.

It was actually...nice.

What wasn't nice? The fucking shakes. Her mouth was dry, which the cigarette didn't help as the cherry tip of it vibrated in the air, and she felt like absolute shit. Sweaty and pale, she wasn't going to win any beauty contests any time soon. But this guy might as well see her like this. See how much hinged on staying clean.]

Yeah.

[That's a lot of monosyllables, and she's annoyed with herself. But she's not proud of this, she doesn't flaunt it like a mark of how hard she is. She used to, when she was still a kid, but now it's just a weight on her. The scars of injection points and abcesses. The hospital visits, the rehab, all the things she regrets.]

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Both, I guess. Doesn't really seem all that promising to me.

[He realizes only as he steps out onto the eighth floor that he's been here before. 008 >> 024 is Pinkman's room, and he's actually rather afraid for a moment that something is wrong. That this is a trap, perhaps, or that Pinkman is in trouble and this is some grand plot...

Which is idiotic. He knows it's idiotic. And so he knocks nevertheless, even though his lips are thin and even though he expects the worst.]

I think we all have those ideas at sixteen.

[His voice goes a little softer at that, because none of this is his business, and he's never been an addict and can't claim to know what it's like. But that doesn't stop him from caring about another human...or other species, now that he's aboard a spaceship.]

But then we get a little older and wiser - good lord I'm starting to sound like my father. Now that's depressing.

[The mattresses on the floor, her things arranged neatly on the table, and the obvious lived in state of the place should clear things up neatly. The only unusual thing is that Lisbeth's thing are just as obvious, happily coexisting with Jane and Jesse's possessions.]

Come in.

[And he enters - but not very far. He stops just within the doorway, though he nods in greeting.]
