[Annie is neat and calm, at least to start with. She brushed her hair neatly and wove two tiny braids in it that frame her face to help her get calm before they broadcasy. She's going to have a large audience and she has to be less shaken than the woman they heard on audio.]

Hello, everyone. I was talking to Nathan Petrelli about ways to help around the ship, and we came up with the idea of group meals. At least dinner and breakfast, I think. The gardens have plenty of fresh vegetables but I understand not everyone knows how to cook them. Some of the stored food is eaten less than the rest, because it's more complicated.

So I was wondering if there are other cooks aboard that might want to help. Or anyone who wants to, we can teach you. We'll also need--

[Annie checks her notes, pursing her lips.] To take a full inventory of the supplies on the occupied decks, at least, as well as the gardens, so we can plan menus accordingly.

Since I know some people will still want to eat alone, I'll need a headcount of who's interested. And if you have special dietary needs like allergies we can put you on a list for special meals.

I'm not trained as a cook, though I can. Group meals sound like a good idea; I know personally I get distracted by work... quite a bit and forget to eat [ sheepish look ] but it would be good for morale and getting everyone to know each other.

I'm voting for this, for whatever that's worth.

[Annie smiles brightly back.] Good to meet you.

I'm not trained either, but--I'm very worries about the children especially. So good for morale and good for making sure the crew doesn't accidentally starve themselves. [Just a liiiittle teasing.] I forget too sometimes. Doing this will help. So would you like to?

A lot. If I don't know how many people to feed we'll have too much or too little. Do you have any requests?

I know some of the children have family and others looking out for them, but I'm the same. [ Her smile both widens and looks more sheepish; yes, definitely a good thing to do. ] I would. I'm on-call for xenobiology and genetics but I'll help out whenever I can.

That's perfect. I'll make a note.

[A kindred spirit, then. Annie was pleased. She did make a note, right then, to make sure she would.] What are you good with? I do--seafood, I don't really know how to cook meat. We never had it while I grew up. Fish and bread, vegetables. And don't worry, I'm sure we'll have enough volunteers.

[ Always video, since he cannot for the life of him figure out anything on this device except that it clucks and there are faces made in miniature on it, like paintings that constantly update.

This painting -- person -- mentions a name he doesn't understand, if the rest is something he can grasp. Carver's no inspired cook, but... ]

I've done a decent amount of farming growing up.

[ And if he frowns, that's just him being... himself. ]

Yes, Nathan said they need more people in the gardens. Could you help me identify plants? I don't know what everything is.

[Agriculture was District 9. Annie ate from the sea. She smiled warmly at Carver--pretty woman, pretty smile, evidently friendly.]

[ He sighs, shoulders relaxing a fraction as he considers this compared to things like security. ]

Maker knows if any of it's familiar. I'll do what I can.

[ He's only not scowling because she is a pretty woman, and this is something he knows about. For once. ]

When are you looking to get started?

[These odd remarks--Annie knows about superstition, but not really religion. She remembers Nathan mentioning chapel. Maybe she ought to go.]

As soon as possible. I'd like to start feeding people.

[So much better than Security. Annie's no Peacekeeper.]

What's your name?

I can do meat; my father really enjoyed it when I was growing up, so I made sure I knew how. [ Before she was sent to boarding school, at least. ] Potatoes, pasta, even pizza if we can get the ingredients for it.

I'm willing to experiment, too.

[Annie, your life is about to get amazing.]

Maybe there are things in there none of us have seen before. This could be fun as well as useful. I'm--very glad I talked to Nathan.

Carver Hawke, serrah. And you are?

[ He's been by the gardens once already out of sheer tenacious, ignorant purposeful wandering on his own. He figures he can make it back, as long as the halls don't shift on him.

[ What's pizza oh Annie let Betty keep you and teach you all the things. ]

You take dough and flatten it out in a circle with a raised crust outside, then you put tomato sauce on top, then cheese. You can add meat or other toppings -- some people put on pineapple, spinach, anchovies, and so on.

I would guess that there are -- and I think it'll definitely be fun.

Annie Cresta. What does serrah mean?

[Annie is actually fine with the shil shifting, she'd imagine it doing that anyway. One perk of insanity.]

Oh--I can meet you there.

[She'll have to get ready--she's bringing her knives, too. Who couls blame her? She picks up the comm as she tucks them into her belt.]

That sounds very good. Would most people know what that is? Would they like it? My world is...different from a lot of yours, Finnick says.

I'm just glad I can do anything. I'm not a scientist. Not really a fighter either. But we're a crew, you have to pull your weight on a ship. Even one in space.

I think most would. It's extremely common where I'm from, and almost everyone likes it or some version of it. Some people prefer it without meat, and most prefer it without any of those three I mentioned specifically.

[ Pause. ] I teach cellular biology at the university level, back home. If you'd be interested in learning, I'd be more than happy to help.

I think I'd like anchovies. Could we make a lot of it at once? It could be our first meal, if it's popular.

[Also a pause. Her learning?] I don't know if I'm that smart. And what's university level? Or--cellular biology?

It's a formality.

[ He doesn't know how to explain it past that, and he doesn't feel like highlighting the fact he was being polite. It'd undo the effort in the first place, pointless as most his endeavors were proving around here.

It frustrated him to no small end. ]

Nothing important, Serrah Cresta. I'll see you at the entrance to these Gardens?

[ He hopes. If he has to go searching, he will, but one small glimpse of her face is not enough to plan a search around. ]

Then thank you. Serrah Hawke--or it is only for women? Oh, if it is, I'm sorry--

[She blushes, fumbling. He was trying to be nice, for goodness' sake.]

Yes. I'll be there.

[When Carver shows, sure enough Annie is waiting. She's not hiding that she's armed, but it's no threat to him. (She hopes.) She's sitting--on the floor, playing catfish cradle with a bit of string, and lifts her head to smile in greeting.

Definitely. It feeds a lot, too.

You'll never know until you try, and we can definitely start with the basics. It's a type of science -- biology is the study of life, and cells are the building blocks of life.

Perfect.

[How do you explain the school you went to barely taught you to read and write, but you could fillet a human being and knew all the human arteries by twelve? Answer: you don't.] Oh. That sounds very useful. And--but only if you have time, you must be busy.

[ Well. At least she knows what arteries are...? ]

I like keeping busy. And I miss teaching.

Maybe if you taught me enough, I could be an assistant.

[Better than security or nursing. If she could just--be stable enough--but she's doing all right now, isn't she?]

[ He says, then he shoves this stupid -- thing -- in some part of this even stupider suit that counts for all he has to wear on this blighted ship. If anything, it makes him feel more awkward than running around nude.

Minor details.

His own broadsword is strapped to his back, hilt coming well up over his shoulder. He carries it easily, a length of metal that looked like it could have been an exceedingly bizarre ironing board at one point, for sheer size and length if nothing else. ]

Serrah Creston?

[ His body posture is relaxed, and he's not as actively frowning as he was before. It's more his guess that this is indeed the woman he's looking for, and the tied uncertainty of what he'll need to do in waiting if she's not.

What's she doing with that string? Oh, he should... manage to frown less in return. His expression goes more neutral. It's good to see someone else so wise as to have weaponry on them.
