Looks like even passengers who've been here longer could say mostly the same unless they're referring to more specialized and technical aspects.
Even then, there are plenty of unknown variables that hinder our progress.

I don't think either of us has been here longer than the other, which means that I can't say I've learned much more than you have.
It's just that there seems to be a lot more to consider beyond what we're seeing here with the smiley face hit list.
There's talk of AIs, the ship itself being alive, and that this can't be the work of some posers playing unsavory pranks. And while I don't doubt that the captain and commander own the damn space boat, I wonder who the hell chartered these voyages through galactic worm holes that cause demon possessions.
Who the hell built a ship to specifications like being large enough to house a space colony with hallways that rearrange themselves and lock people in or out of various parts of the ship?
Not that it's unnatural to focus mainly on things that most strongly evidence themselves, but it's also worth taking notes on things that are outside the box.

Just how obvious is it? If the ship itself is responsible for the message, what is more likely—a sarcastic challenge with thinly veiled malevolence, or an unassuming, literal statement of fact?

Both. The challenge is implied the moment you wake up in a completely novel area, and the statement of course, obvious nevertheless. Though I’d venture as far as to say if the ship is inclined to keep us on our toes, something more than just obvious statements would be preferred.

The only thing that is obvious is that the entity views it as a matter of life or death for the lot of us. Intent, although arguably a challenge, is not as clear. Why snatch me for example from the jaws of death, go to the trouble of restoring my health, only to place it in jeopardy once more?

To each his own. What sort of purpose do you imagine is behind collecting intergalactic variable subjects, affecting them with cabin fever, and placing them in high stress scenarios aboard an enigmatic space colony?
Could one ever justify the objective behind such an experiment?

One scenario might be survival of the fittest, possibly. A preface to the creation of a Utopian society en route to the colonization of some flyspeck of a planet somewhere. [That's probably a best-case version.]

That would depend on the level of arrogance, which would appear to be considerable.

Then do you think our objective is to survive anything they throw at us, or to inevitably survive one another as probable representatives of our respective races or species?

It's a possibility, but not necessarily a conclusive one, due to lack of any supporting evidence. We were encouraged to 'try not to die' after all.

Sounds like you agree more with the former. That's cool.
Nothing wrong with discoursing theories and possibilities. But I've heard that many would rather avoid doing so.

As it wasn't clear - yes, the former. There is little indication that this is meant to represent an arena of any sort, where one is pitted against a fellow passenger in a fight to the death.

Although I suppose it could actually come to that, if people become panicked and suspicious of one another. [Wasn't that a pleasant thought.]
