Medbay is understaffed, an' we don't have enough doctors. Or nurses. Whatever.

[No explanation as to the reason he's bothering with a network post, just the facts.]

Most of us will take too long t'learn it - we need help now. So I'm lookin' for some people who can build us some nurses, or somethin'.

[OOC -

This is essentially an IC plotting/mingling post, with the end goal of creating a few nurse-bots for the ship, for those times when the Medstaff isn't around. Feel free to threadjack and let this ball roll far, far away from this court.]

Did you say build nurses?

Well, the problem with-- uhm. Building-- nurses is the specific skill sets and the judgments calls couldn't-- really be made by a machine without a particularly advanced AI.

Most AI's are currently in meatsuits. And I don't know that I've ever been able to code one where I'd trust it to work on somebody's body. Built a death ray, yes. Manage stitches? Well, it's a stretch, but...

We do have AI's-- built on our home technologies. Some of them are here in the flehs. JARVIS, Wheatley, others. They're made human. And honestly-- do you want an AI like Wheatley treating your wounds?

See, that's just it. You need an AI who can think and judge on it's own to do something as complex as medicine. Even basic tasks require a certain -- discretion. I mean, I could rig up an auto-stitcher, but it wouldn't be gentle, pleasant, or pretty.

I'm not saying it's impossible-- but I'm saying we'd need an advanced frame world and some fantastic resources. Those I'm not sure we have on the ship.

IF we have the resources to build, program, and give an AI a body-- well, let's just say we'd be doing a lot better off than we are now. [Normally, Megamind might relish the challenge. Today? Today he's a little less than hopeful.] But I'll see what I can manage. Maybe some of the others can assist.

I'm not sure I can help build any nurses, but I used to be one. I've got a paramedic license, too.

Perhaps the next jump will provide you with a wealth of medical professionals.

I know not of what use I might be, but I have some skill in healing.

This is probably the part where I raise my hand to let people know that I volunteered prostheticist services to medical about two jumps ago. I can create artificial limbs without amputation and have been working on a couple such projects that require the use of simple AIs.
On a tangentially related note, I successfully created an AI whose algorithms were based on my own neurological processes. While the auto-responder himself was restricted to a pair of glasses, he did have control of two robots that were customized for my friends.
The point is that this is a thing I'm capable of doing if given enough time, resources, and a copy of a doctor or nurse's brain.

Oohohoh! Brain-copy! Intriguing! I can see where that could cut down on the worry, but-- someone might get a little tetchy about the idea of their brain being in a block box somewhere. Collective experiences, the soul, yadda yadda.

Ratchet might, though, considering he was originally a robot anyway, might? Though-- he's not exactly the medical doctor most people think of. Ask Watson, perhaps? We combine our skills and I can see what I can scavenge, and Dirk asks him nicely...?

Precisely what we're workin' on down in the Science Department.

If you can't make an AI I say do the next best thing: take an organic brain and transform all that brain data into flawless digital code.

Not only are we lacking in nurses, if recent experiences have proven anything is that we're sorely lacking in security too! Maybe this damn ship wants to tear us up from the inside through fear and panic, but we sure as hell can build some nice sentry robots.

I've got some tech experience, and a bit of medical. Maybe I could help out.

How often are people getting injured, exactly, that makes the ship understaffed?

Or is it more of a general term?
