Well, that was fun. Anyone got a look at our surprise guests, or this is yet another frustrating mystery the ship is keeping from us?

[ She ain't even mad though; this little trip has replenished her stash of booze, not to mention she got a crapton of clothes. ]

We should do this more often.

Frustrating mystery. ( ugh. though she got her fair share of swag, too, and can't complain about an opportunity to stretch her legs somewhere else. she's not sure if she's relieved or not that it wasn't, as nathan had wondered, the last stop on the line. )

Can I ask a favour, though?

Would you mind if Severus Snape from Xenogen talked to you about vampirism a little bit? I sort of--

( she makes a faint, disgusted noise. )

Elena was ill, and I thought I'd help, and now weird things are happening to both of us and he's trying to figure out why, and she said you're much older.

( reflectively: ) I'd guessed twins.

[ You can't see her eyebrow rising, but oh yeah it is. ]

You helped her how.

( primly: ) Severus is trying to figure out, among other things, how my blood got her trolleyed off her tits.

( she sounds acutely aware of what a terrible idea giving it in the first place was. several people, severus included, have given her the hard word about absolutely never doing that again, stupid. )

[ ugh.

UGH. ]

Elena is a very inexperienced vampire, you're lucky she didn't suck you dry. I guess there is no point on hiding the fact I'm well over five hundred years, then. Twins is not really the answer you're looking from.

[ She's not going to give Ilde an earful though, partly because that's not her style and partly because she can tell others have done it already. ]

So what did exactly happen to Elena?

It was stupid, I'm very stupid, never again, etcetera. ( which does indicate she's heard the lectures - at length - but does manage not to sound like an eyerolling adolescent; she knows they're right, and she is quite thoroughly learning from her mistake. )

Not sure, exactly. She got extremely drunk, for starters, properly gone almost at once; Severus is trying to rule out causes and figure out what's going on. More or less his job.

( though she and he both know she went to him less because it is literally his job description and more because "oh, i know a wizard, i'll bug him about this weird probably magic shit". )

Yeah yeah, whatever.

[ Don't make her worry Ilde, that's not how she rolls dammit. ]

Were you drunk or high when she bit you? It's definitely something on your blood- or even magic, but still, in your blood.

( worry so much, katherine. )

No, absolutely sober. And not on any medications.

[ No she's a cold hearted bitch. Only not really. ]

Then your blood has magic properties of some sort. It's a weird thing in my world, but I know none of yours. Maybe someone casted a spell on you.

--that must be it. The spell thing. I'll tell him.

( that's the most obvious explanation, right? that makes sense. it has to be that. maybe someone here? --hm. )

There are lots of magic users on board, after all.

Yeah but, it doesn't make any sense. It's not like someone put you up to get bitten by Elena in the first place. Is she...you know, okay now?

[ SHE DOESN'T CARE. ]

There are other ways to see whether it's magic or not though.

I think so. Stressed, but-- better. She was better pretty quickly, just rather drunk as well.

( bewildering. a bit unsettling. she'd slunk down to see severus quite quickly, after that. )

--what sort of ways?

It's mostly lore back home, but some supernatural species have a natural resistance to certain things we vampires can do.

[ Katherine could also offer biting her, but she isn't risking her sanity for the sake of helping. ]

What was the supernatural state of affairs back in your world?

( katherine can't see it, but ilde's making a face-- ) I don't know. Before the Tranquility, I'd have said the supernatural state of affairs was that new-agey idiots ought to sober up and put their clothes on.

But now you're thinking, it could be a thing. Might be worth giving it a spin.

( there's a very long pause, and then-- )

What sort of things can you do? Vampires, I mean. Besides the obvious.

( at the time, she'd just thought elena was a crazy person. in retrospect, katherine may have hit the nail alarmingly on the head. )

We're stronger, sturdier, sort of undead. You know, drinking blood and hissing at sunlight, stuff like that. We can also compel people to do whatever we want, but some supernatural races are immune to it. If I can't compel you, you might as well be one of them. That would also explain the blood thing.

[ She has ideas about which races might be involved, but is too soon to scare Ilde even more. ]

( extremely carefully: ) What's the compelling thing like?

( katherine can probably just about hear ilde's heart sinking. elena had caught a hold of her, looked her straight in the eyes and made demands-- ilde's response had been, in a nutshell, to express that certain freaky weirdos needed to give her some fucking personal space. it was their very first encounter, at ilde's very first jump. not the sort of thing you forget. )

I tell you to do something, and you do it. Easy as that.

[ But she knows that tone. ]

I'll let Severus know.

( rather faintly. )

Hey, we don't need to do anything if you don't want to.

[ She may care a little, sue her. ]

I think I sort of-- might have already done. I should ask Elena.

( or make someone else ask elena! that sounds like a much better idea. )

Did she try to compel you?

[ Nobody screws with the head pretty girl giving her asylum from Klaus other than her, God dammit. ]

I think she might've? I thought she was just - I don't know, I didn't think anything of it. She tried to make me tell her things, I didn't know what she was talking about and I just wanted some room to breathe. When we first met.

That's the definition of compelling, and apparently you're immune.

[ A pause. ]

Interesting.

Yeah. Yes. Well.
