My brother did not return with us, this jump; I'm certain he regrets very much his inability to share in your celebrations, as do I.

In his absence, I remain, if you choose, patroness to your family. However, I understand that this bond was one predicated on my brother's standing relationship-- if you wish to be released from this agreement, I will not begrudge it.

I wish to know how the difference is known between those absences believed to lead those absent home and those who simply did not make the jump in time.

Presumably we are discounting instances where a person in question was not seen entering a pod and has left no remains in either a recorded or physical sense?

We are. I wish to know if, in the event that no body can be located, if there is an established means of determining the difference between absence and death.

I know what that's like. But given choice, I believe Prince Nuada would have stayed, though I hadn't the pleasure of his acquaintance. All the same he seemed to have a good existence in the midst of all this and of course he had you.

I believe that this may have been his choice. Severus is looking into ways I might determine the truth of that, but I don't know that it's truly necessary. He wanted what he wanted.

A conversation we had, not long ago. I told him the truth as I believe it, a truth he didn't care for, and he made his feelings plain to me then.

I shouldn't have so quickly dismissed him.

Of course. I also don't believe he left willingly. Statistically speaking, extremely unlikely. Personally speaking I would have thought you'd give him more credit than to forsake you here of all places.

That unlikelihood stands only if you believe that he left. I do not.

He cut open my face, bled himself, to express his displeasure with me; he took me hostage and used that threat to manipulate a man of weaker conviction into handing him the means to destroy the world in which we lived. I plunged a knife into the heart we share. If anything surprises me, it's that we found even so tenuous a peace as we managed here- I hoped that it would hold, that we might build a foundation beneath it again to hold it up, but I didn't fool myself that it was so strong a bond.
