I've got an inquiry about amputation. Metaphysical amputation, you could call it.

Where I come from, cutting off limbs is a routine procedure. We've been doing it since before the days of biting on a belt buckle and bearing the pain. And if you do it right, you'll survive. But what about parts that can't can't be cut into and stitched up?

Some of you call it magic, even if that frankly just sounds like fairytale bullshit to me. A generalized name for distinct powers in different worlds.

It's something that can't be seen or touched, that's immaterial, and is yet just as attached to you as an arm or leg. If you cut yourself you bleed. If you remove that part of you, what happens? How the fuck do you cut out something like that?

At least for me, it hasn't always been there, so logically, I shouldn't need it around. I should be able to get rid of it, without repercussion. Except that's the thing about this-- magic-- power-- whatever you want to call it. It isn't logical. It's existence itself is a blatant fuck you to all the laws of the universe, laws that have a damn good reason for being there in the first place. Unfortunately, it's also stubborn. Older and trickier than you can even imagine. It doesn't want to go away, and it'll keep on reminding you of that, louder and louder, ever incessant.

My question is simple— how do I get rid of it?

Possibly psychic surgery. Possibly a modified exorcism. Possibly a ritual. Possibly disabling the part of your brain that controls whatever it is you want gone. Possibly a hundred other things that may or may not work because without knowing what you're talking about, it's impossible to say. Just like there's a different process for removing a hand at the wrist and a leg at the knee, there are different processes for metaphysical manipulation.

If your supposed universal laws do not account for magic or, pardon me, "fairytale bullshit", then they are pedestrian and incomplete.

Considering my anonymity, don't you think I'm being vague on purpose? Never really liked show and tell, which includes delineating the details of my existence to a network full of strangers. What i want to know is whether it's possible in your world to get rid of "magic," and if it is, then I'll explain further.

And the laws aren't supposed to account for a power whose very purpose is meant to break them.

I must have been distracted by the part where you compared wanting to get rid of something because you don't like it to a procedure nobody would ever choose except to save their damn life.

but 'cut out' is little more than a metaphor. it can't be seen, but it's still there, and maybe there's someone out there who can at least sense it and. i don't know. rip it out? separate it from me?

Foolish. Optimism will not save you. And it is very likely a gun alone will do you no better. This place stripped my own powers from me. Believe me, I would not chose it.

I might be risking my own survival, but if this is my only chance to put things to rights, then I'll take it.

What is right? You sound as if you are afraid of these powers.

Inconvenienced? Frustrated? Sure. Scared? That's a little strong.

Right is how things have always been. And after living your life for one way for years, who wants to alter how they interact with the world?

You said yourself, you have a power that defies rationale. A strength few others possess. To reject it to return to some past version of yourself. That is fear. And it will kill you.

All life must change. All life must evolve. If it does not, it will be destroyed.

I'm as good as defending myself with my powers, as I am at not accidentally lighting my own hand on fire. Because they were never meant to be mine-- it wasn't evolution, it was an accident, which is why it will never work right for me.

Scared or not, that doesn't change the fact that I want it gone. I will bear the consequences. The question is whether you know how to do this?

But if you are set on this stubborn path, I will have you know that I know no way to remove something of that nature. Many in this place have had their own powers stripped or lessened, but the ship is responsible. I would not trust it's assistance.

Time not using it, is the only cure I have seen for that which I know. But there seem to be as many types of magic here as trees in the gardens.

The singular thing tying together is the name magic, and perhaps being a pain in the ass.

But there are still elements that can't be turned off, that you can't stop using, like when the future decides to give you the finger while you dream.

i don't think getting fucked over by a psychopath counts as a mutation, really. but that story is too long and irrelevant.

Would there even anyone to ask? They proved that it is possible, and they did a pretty damn good job, considering that it should be impossible.
