[ the communicators aren't that different from the phones that used to be on earth, but wanderer is still having trouble getting used to it -- she'd been out of civilization more than she was in it, and hadn't had to use a phone in more than a year. she's spent a half hour messing with the thing, looking it over and testing its various functions before she feels comfortable enough with it to start up a post of her own.

at first the video is completely off-center, showing a view of wanda's shoulder rather than her face, but she corrects that quickly, offering a sheepish smile to the camera. her eyes look subtly luminous, not quite normal human eyes, but not so different that she doesn't think she should show her face. ]

Hello. I'm sorry to bother you all, but I had a question -- there was some medicine in my locker that I don't need. Is there a medical facility of some kind here? I would prefer to put it to good use than get rid of it. I can show you how to use it, if need be, though it's rather simple. The names should really give it all away. Thank you in advance for your help!

What's the medicine? Just so we know what we'd be getting from you.

A poultice? No, I don't -- know what that is.

[ wanda doesn't know a lot of archaic human words -- if melanie didn't know them, there was no reason for her to, and the soul history lessons didn't cover things like medicine from the middle ages. ]

They're... well, it's hard to explain without demonstrating. I suppose you could call one a disinfectant.

Oh -- I suppose I wasn't paying enough attention, I'm sorry.

[ a healer! just who she needs to speak to. ]

It's a bit hard to explain -- one is a disinfectant, one encourages cells to regrow as they should, and the other binds wounds together. I can demonstrate, if you need me to, though I'd prefer to do that in the facility, rather than in my room.

[ getting blood on the sheets would not be fun at all. ]

[nill sees that there is something in her eyes, something different. but nill spend a lot of time looking at and noticing people. for now, she doesn't mention it.]

[What a fuckin' world. People just giving away pills like they were nothing. She supposed they were- their little clinic was apparently pretty well stocked, even though she'd avoided it.]

Considering it was after you got thrown up by the pods, it's easily forgiven.

You don't— I'd rather you not injure yourself on purpose just to test what the medicines do. Wouldn't be much of a doctor if I let you.

Oh, I would be fine! They work extremely well. The only problem would be I have no Smooth, so there would be a scar, but I'm not concerned by scars.

The medbay? Is that like a hospital?

[ so many terms wanda has never heard before. she'd thought she knew humans very well by now, having been with them for so long, but she can tell she still has a lot to learn. ]

Well, I'm not injured. It would be wrong to keep it if I don't need it myself.

[ does it help if they're not actually pills? they're... a spray, a lotion, and a...goop, for lack of a better word. ]

There's a disinfectant, one that encourages cell growth, and one that binds wounds together while the Heal does its work.

Sounds useful.

[She's silent for a moment, considering the cost versus the benefit. Sounded very useful. Even if they didn't use it, someone else might want it later. A bargaining chip. But she'd have to tip her hand, and that had risks.

Still, if it worked out it would be worth it.]

You got enough of it you might consider a trade?

[ nah just demonstration when it involves things that binds wounds together kind of tends to mean injury somehow. ]

Smooth. Let me guess, makes it so there isn't a scar. [ he snorts. ] Scars are fine on anyone who'd be using it I think. Well, might not completely but better than bleeding out.

[ ...right probably shouldn't say that to the teenager. ]

Yes! It's a powder you dust over scars and it just sort of melts them away. It's not necessary to Healing, of course, but it would have been nice to have anyway. No Pain would have been even better, though. [ go on bones, guess what no pain does. ] Better than dying, yes. Much better.

[ you're sweet, bones, but this is not an actual teenager. ]

[ wanda disconnected the feed and pocketed her communicator -- the jumpsuit wasn't exactly attractive, but it was more practical than the sundress she'd been given in her locker -- grabbing the three white cylinders that contained the medicine and heading out the door.

Dr. McCoy? It's Wanda, I have the medicine we talked about.

You just want to give it away?

[ scott sounds more impressed than skeptical, and he's smiling — mostly because of the mishap with the video, but it's tempered enough to be polite. ]

I bet medbay will take it, but the medicine the ship gave us is pretty good. Better than what I'm used to at home, anyway.

Yes. If you do not know how to get there I can show you.

[ Okay, there's definitely something... different about this chick, but October's not exactly afraid of the unknown. (So long as you don't befriend her and then try to kill her in the hallways by going vampire-crazy and trying to drink her dry.) So while she looks a little more curious than she might normally, she's not really going to point anything out.

Besides, it could just be a trick of the light. Or the ship messing with the feed. Or, for that matter, the ship messing with October's head. ]

What kind of medicine did you get?

An unguent--a paste, or ointment. Used to draw infection from a wound or to reduce inflammation.

[ gently bred she might be, but she was set to keep a very large household someday, and has been educated accordingly. ]

A what? Oh, like alcohol. We use wine, or something similar to do that.

Does your medicine sting as it takes effect?

It is! It's much more effective than hu -- normal medicine.

[ hopefully the slip-up wasn't too obvious. ]

I'm sorry, I already said I would take it to the medbay -- do you need some? If I ever get more I can give it to you. Medicine should go to those with the most need.

Medicine should go to whoever has the most need, I think. It wouldn't be right of me to keep it if it could help someone else!

[ wanda smiles back brightly, pleased to see a friendly face. ]

I'm sure the medicine here is more than adequate, but mine is probably better. Not that I mean to brag, I didn't make it, or anything, but I've had to use it a couple times, and it works perfectly. My brother once tripped and fell on a knife, and the wound got badly infected. The medicine I have with me fixed it so you couldn't even tell he'd ever fallen.

That would be very helpful, thank you! I haven't been on this ship very long, and it's very big. It's a bit intimidating to explore on my own.

[ wanda would sooner die than kill anyone, so no worries there. she's a very peaceful sort of girl, is wanda. comes with being a soul. ]

Clean, Heal, and Seal. They're a disinfectant, something to encourage cell growth, and a... well, a sealing agent, to bind wounds together. They work very well, so I don't want to get rid of them, and if I have no use for them, they should go where they're most needed.

Oh, yes, I suppose you could say that Clean is like that, then.

[ cue wanda looking shocked and distressed at the thought of using alcohol -- wine -- to disinfect wounds. ]

You use wine to disinfect wounds? That can't be sanitary. I promise, my medicines work far better.

No, not at all. ...well, actually, come to think of it, I'm not sure. The one time I had to use them on myself I was under the influence of No Pain, so I couldn't feel anything. I don't think so, though. My people wouldn't create anything that would hurt you, even if it hurt in order to heal.

[The slip up was pretty obvious, but Tess didn't have anything to say about it. She'd learned pretty quick that not everyone aboard this ship was human. She'd tried to take it in stride.]

I've got a few lingering injuries.

[Technically true, even if her intention wasn't to use the stuff.]

It is not so hard once you know how to use the lifts.

anyway, the mention of her medicine being better than the ship's catches his attention, for obvious reasons. ]
