So the lifts are working correctly now, far as I can tell. I got from the first floor passenger deck to Communications without any problem. And before anyone starts slagging me off for taking the risk of checking them, my defense is that I haven't had any coffee this morning and I was moving on automatic. When any one of you can tell me you've never done anything embarrassingly stupid while half asleep, then you have permission to berate me.

Avoiding the elevators still seems sensible, however. One successful use does not guarantee that they are danger-free.

On the one hand, yes, you're right. On the other hand, we can't avoid the lifts indefinitely. We should probably think about doing some controlled tests, now that I've unwittingly succeeded in an uncontrolled one.

Look. Ianto. I'm not gonna fault you for looking for her. [But they're going to have to admit that she's gone. The words are floating there unsaid.] But what if the lifts hadn't fixed themselves?

I know. I know, Jack, I do. Like I said, I wasn't thinking, and when I realized, it was already too late. But I'm fine. All in one piece and at my destination, and the lift didn't even make an off noise.

I am sorry, though. I wasn't trying to be reckless.

For one thing, I don't subscribe to the philosophy that we ought to let fear rule us, and sacrifice freedoms for safety that's probably an illusion in the first place. For another, it's bloody inconvenient.

People are going to start trying them out when they get sick of walking, one way or another, Edgeworth. Might as well test things first.

They malfunctioned because they felt like it, probably.
