[Jack's no stranger to death. In fact, of all the people on board, he's perhaps one of the ones most familiar with it, having experienced it more times than he can count. The fact that it comes so easily, on board this ship, it unnerves him. Back home, with Torchwood, he was used to losing his friends right and left, but that was because of their job. That was their choice, because of what they did. But here... Here where he knows there are kids and innocents and no one asked for this, no one asked to be here. It really pisses him off. First Hotspur, now Sherlock, and god knows how many others that he wasn't paying attention to in between them. He was killed on board once, and stuffed in a closet. He wonders how many of the others that have disappeared have died, and none of them ever found out. And the thought bothers him. A lot.

When he appears on the camera, his expression is hard, tight. That big matinee idol smile is gone, and his blue eyes are cold steel.]

How many does this make? How many of us have died on this ship? [A curious phrasing, some may note] How many people have we lost that we know of? How many have disappeared and we have no idea what happened to them?

[And then, after a pause:] Has anyone left and come back again remembering their previous time on the ship?

[There are a million questions running around in his head, and he wants answers]

[ He'd kind of like the answers too, because the fact that they're being asked is kind of unnerving for this newb. ]

[ ariadne caught the phrasing and did take a moment to pause and think about it, before finally replying in a obviously somber tone. ]

[Taylor's response is delayed where she's dealing with the Sherlock situation, but she manages to have herself looking composed enough when she gets to it.]

I am. We could use all the help we can get, if you want to switch. [His network number's coming up with OPR, and that could mean any numbers of departments - ones that she would consider as important as security for their continued safety, and stealing people seems a bit off.] Your department not need you?

In case you haven't noticed, this place is turning out a pretty intense place to be.

[He tries not to sound too bitter about that fact]

Not really. It's a survival instinct, I think.

[He pauses for a moment himself, before speaking up again. He notices the somber tone in her voice, and realizes that he hasn't really seen her around a lot lately] You okay, Ariadne?

[ Amy wants exactly what Jack wants. Answers. Unfortunately, she doesn't have any. But there's a sort of fellow time traveller obligation to talk about what's happening with him. ]

Not sure I want to think about that number. But I know from experience people can always come back. Sometimes. It's complicated. And it seems a bit different here. [ somewhat defeated sigh. her rambling is leading her into a dead-end explanation. ] Maybe with the Doctor here now, we might figure something out.

Indeed you aught, and I see no plan. I see questions of a mind scampering for answers. Certainly this is not the first time disappearances had come in waves.

The gunnery. [He can practically feel her looking for his stats as she speaks] Jim's got it all under control. Somehow I think that my certain brand of expertise would be better put to use elsewhere.

[He's even willing to tell her his secret, here, if she needs more reason. He's pretty desperate to get out there and do something and not feel quite as useless as he does right here and now.] It's not looking good out there. Not at all. Especially not after... Recent events. Strela and now this. And before. You're from the first wave too, right? You know the kind of crap that I'm talking about.

People have been coming back. There's no question to that. But they've been coming back different. And all this place seems to give us is more questions, no matter how many answers we uncover.

[ Blind faith? Not exactly. The Doctor has abandoned her more times than she would like to admit, and not to mention the fact he doesn't remember their time in Siren's Port (not that many people here do). But she trusts him to be a brilliant genius alien, who wants to save everyone, and they are in space. It's his area of expertise. Or something. ]

I'm sure you're pretty familiar with at least some aspects of all of that. [Considering she knew a different version of him than the one that she's talk to, for example]

I know all of it, yeah. [She hadn't been down on Strela (something that was gnawing away at her no matter how many times she told herself she couldn't have known), but she's had several in-depth reports, she knows what happened. Everything before that, she'd been there. She knows how important it is to keep security moving, to keep adding to their number as much as possible. She nods.] You want on and Kirk's okay with it, I'll take you.

[A pause. The usual new recruits were new to the ship, as well, but this guy didn't need her running through the full spiel, nor did she really need any kind of reference on his character if he'd already been working that close with Kirk. But she didn't like adding to the team blind, and she needed to know who could do what.]

Gonna need to know something about your training and experience, though.

[A slight tilt of her head as she says it, knowing what it sounds like but not wanting to seem condescending. 'Captain' said something, but with Kirk and Jack Sparrow running around, she needed more detail.]

Depends on if I find anything in the first place. I've been here as long as any of us have, minus the good old captain and first mate. But there have to be more answers than the ones we've found so far. It's just a matter of finding them in the first place.

[ he bites a sigh, because really. ] Your ears fail you as I had not questioned your questions or whatever deductions sprung henceforth. I had questioned the plans in which you may wish to impliment. If any.

My training and experience... [Jack pauses himself, and it's obvious that he's hesitating, trying to figure out how much to tell her. He's a man with lots of secrets, and he isn't entirely keen on sharing most of them. Most of them no one really needs to know, as far as he's concerned. But in this case...

It's good that she doesn't sound condescending at him. That's the last thing he needs. He's already making a leap of faith, transferring jobs. It's comfortable, where he is. Safe. But he doesn't need safe, especially considering who and what he is.]

I went to the Academy and joined the Agency as a Time Agent. Served there for a few years, traveling through time and space until I realized that it wasn't what I thought it would be. I've fought in...at least three wars, by rough estimate. Served in the British Army, was a captain in the Royal Air Force. Got recruited by an organization in Cardiff. [He chuckles slightly, and it's not quite a happy sound] Torchwood. Defending the Earth against the threat of alien attack. Going where they wanted, doing what they asked of me. Ended up in charge of that branch, London fell and so Cardiff was all there was. I had a team for a few years. [Until everything went to shit. He shrugs. He knows it's a lot to process, but he also knows there's more to say, especially considering the track record he just shared there]

I'm willing to bet the next question you've got for me is how I've managed all that when I still don't look a day over 35, am I right? [Something of a cheeky smile, although it's not up to usual par. (Plus, he was 40 when he got stuck the way he was, and he's vain enough to know that in some lights, that shows)]

Believe me, I wasn't exactly in love with the man either, but he didn't deserve to end up the way he did.
