My name is Miles – uh, Morales. Sorry Mr. Edgeworth, I forgot for a second. I wanted to ask – there aren’t real police here, are there? Not the kind that put people in jail. [ H’s already frowning at his communicator, but that frown gets a little deeper. He’s already got a pretty clear idea of the answer just from reading the network and watching the goings-on in the ship for the last couple of days. Still, he could be wrong… ] There aren’t any jails, either.

Though I don’t know if colony ships are supposed to have that kind of stuff or not. [ Or even if they are, if this one ever did. There’s still too much that he doesn’t know – even if some of it is more mundane and awkward to deal with. Which is why he’s back a little bit later: ]

But there’s, uh…a place to clean your clothes, right?[ An uncomfortable pause. ] And a place to take a shower by yourself?

[ And last but not least, to try to cover up the embarrassment from those last two questions and before he loses his nerve: ] Is there anybody else here from New York?

There is actually a "brig." The problem is that who is put in there tends to be...arbitrary.

Aren't those only on boats?

I suppose they consider this a "boat" after a fashion. They have utilized nautical terminology in naming the various parts of the ship.

There is a security force here, but unless you're inclined to piss off a few, I doubt anyone will.

[ Besides, you're a kid, Miles. If that's anything to go by, Erik really doubts Kirk and the others would be inclined to do such a thing. He's missing his helmet, except the familiar frown at the realization of another young adult being here, at the fact that the ship was inclined to allow this to continue. ]

Westchester, New York, to answer your last question. [ Erik shrugs lightly at that, though it's not quite the truth either; it was his last place of residence, but certainly not where Erik would consider home. ]

Except the brig is supposed to be temporary, isn't it?

Because a proper trial can't happen unless the person in the brig is in their own country.

Theoretically, the rule of the captain on any ship is equivalent to the rule of law. Though that is an absurd proposition when none of us actually ever signed up to be on a ship. So the captain, at times, takes the liberty of imprisoning miscreants but he does so with authority derived from nowhere.

[He reminds her of Lamb.

No reason for that--Lamb is dark but not as dark as Miles, their faces are alike but only so much--except for the charm and gentleness of his teenaged fumbling.
